Recovering and Tie-Dyeing.

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

This a bag of plastic wrapped t-shirts and onesies that have been folded, scrunched, twirled and tie-dyed. Here is the other batch:

Not very pretty pictures, but I wanted to show you what I have been doing today. That nice red plastic container and one of my bags must have sprung a leak:

Not to worry, it is all cleaned up.

I am tie-dyeing stuff for all my great nieces and nephews. I wanted something special to give them when I go home for the reunion. For the youngest girls, I used hot pink, purple and turquoise. For the other shirts, I used mixing blue, mixing red and lemon yellow. I will post photos of the end product tomorrow. Even though it is quite warm here, I am pretty tired and so I will let them batch overnight.

I saw the Dr. yesterday and we decided I had a full blown sinus infection and so I am on the Z pack (Azithromycin). I felt quite a bit better this morning, but still had a nagging sinus head-ache. I forged ahead with my day and I am feeling much better tonight.

I received notification of another quilt accepted into a show today. High Desert Aspens was accepted into the Oregon SAQA show, our first ever. 32 of 50 quilts were accepted. I didn’t really think my other two quilt would make it.

Migraine Pain

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

For two days, I have been suffering with an intense debilitating headache. Via phone consultations between the ENT and primary care advice nurses, the prognosis is a migraine. I have not had one in ages. I used to have them back in the day. I have barely been able to function except to do what I have to do. I am not a wimp. I have a high threshold for pain, and it is hard to keep me down. So, I have kept plugging along, walking Scooter and doing the cooking, but that is about it. This afternoon, I did an ice pack on my head and it felt better. I even felt like eating dinner. It tasted pretty good.

So, I ventured back down to my studio and decided to do a fiber sketch of what a migraine might look like. It hurts my head to look at it so I may have succeeded!

I also printed some aspen leaves on organza and cut them out. I pinned them to the trees. I am not sure this is going to work. I think I will try lutradur next. I really am not happy with the colors, so I need to work on that.

I was happy to get notification today that I have two pieces juried into Blurred Boundaries, a show that is focusing on work with surface design, this year. The show takes place at the Fabrications Retreat in Michigan at the end of August. The two pieces selected are Indigo Construction and Scorched Earth.

My duh moment will be something nice for one of my readers. I apparently ordered Jane Dunnewold’s new book, Art Cloth, three times. I ordered it from her website and from Amazon, which I cancelled after I realized I could order it directly from Jane. This week, I received a copy from Interweave, the publisher. I must have pre-ordered it from them. So, some time in the next week, when I feel better, I will have a chance for someone to receive my second copy. Stay tuned.

Hope I am feeling better tomorrow. I have Dr. appointment in the afternoon as a back-up.

It was another day of gray gloomy weather until late this afternoon. I had to wear my sweatshirt in the studio. You can see that I have shifted the aspen layout, adding two more trees. I cut some paper leaves and they are placed on the ground near the middle ground trees. This is a work in progress. I am enjoying playing with the possibilities. I am trying to push myself artistically.

I went to High Fiber Diet meeting tonight and showed them my Sketchbook. It was fun to have people see the real thing. Here is tonight’s simple offering.

Here is another beautiful thing that I made today – Berry Good Jam. It is a mixture of raspberries, blueberries and strawberries. Oregon is berry heaven right now.

Half a Day of Sunshine

Monday, July 19th, 2010

I am a little miffed that Mr Sun did not show up until afternoon today. I find that sunshine this time of year gives me a needed burst of energy. So I had a slow start getting work done in my studio. I made the above piece for the Sketchbook Project. I named it Moody Blues.

I have been thinking about the layout for my silk aspen piece. I want to do something different so I am trying to show some aspens in the middle ground in addition to some in the foreground. I also have a problem making the first cut into the aspen fabric. I finally did it. This is what I came up with today. I will be adding leaves that will help with the depth and trunk placement. I’m wondering if I should make the foreground trunks heavier.

I fused the organza to silk fabric. I love how it looks. It gives the organza such a nice texture.

Tonight, I started scrunching and folding t-shirts and onesies to tie-dye in the next couple of days. I am taking them to the family reunion next month for all the great nieces and nephews. Speaking of which, a new great niece entered the world today. Her name is Gwen Charlotte. Her mom is my niece Jennifer.

Isn’t she beautiful? Her big sister loves purple so they will both get purple and pink tie-dyes.

Week-end Whirlwind

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

I woke up Saturday morning and knew that I needed to make a list. I had many things to do and was feeling just a little overwhelmed. I needed to get an online show entry done, write the president’s letter for the guild newsletter and proof my chapter in the Twelve by Twelve book, The nice weather was beckoning me out to work in the gardens. I got everything done and finished quilting the background for the silk aspen quilt.

I thought I would share some recent acquisitions with you. I recently subscribed to the Hand/Eye magazine. I received my first copy. It is a gorgeous, over-sized publication. This issue is about Asian textiles.

Yesterday, I received by Blurb catalogue of the Beneath the Surface show.

The quilts are making their debut at the International Quilt Festival in Long Beach later this week.

Today, I was at my local “everything” store, and this new Panasonic Iron jumped into my cart.

I love this shape – works coming and going.

Here is my old iron which has survived many falls and has lost some of its plastic parts.

I love these irons because they have a titanium sole and great for fusing fabrics.

This afternoon, we took Scooter down to the Willamette river to play. It was his first time encountering a large body of water. At first, he was very wary, but he saw the other dogs having fun and finally started retrieving sticks for us. He would not go deep enough to swim, but he was great for his first time. You can see more photos on my Flickr Site.
