Healing Art

Wednesday, February 16th, 2005

I have been so touched by the messages and good thoughts that have been sent my way since I broadcast my problem with breast cancer. I am a lot like my mother in that I would rather be giving and caring than receiving and it is sometimes hard for me to deal with the all the attention.

This I know, in the past few days I have had an energy and a zest for life that can only be explained by the many prayers and lovely good thoughts that are being sent out to me and carrying me through this time.

I want to share 3 special gifts with you which have arrived at my door.

Elizabeth Van Schaick who is on the Quilt Art list with me sent this healing quiltlet. She says it is a healing talisman and she sometimes calls this a “woobie”, which is a term for a security blanket. It is meant for me to take with me whenever/whereever I need to. She has explained all the symbolism in a card she sent with it. Here is the front:

Here is the back:

Cathy Hansen, a member of my Pointless Sisters Art Quilt group sent me this hand made quilty valentine with several fat quarters of lime green fabrics! (I love lime green!)

My friend Mitch saw my blog and my music preferences and made me a CD of 60s and jazz music. The cd and cover were done in his computer art. The music choices are terrific and I am enjoying the cd in my car. His wife Vicki is our new parish administrator and she calls me the queen of all things!!

I thought I would share the bounty of my blessings today. Thank you to all who have sent wonderful healing thoughts my way.

Love is in the Mail

Monday, February 14th, 2005

Well, I had my visit with the surgeon today. She is a lovely young woman – could be my daughter. She gave me only one option – a mastectomy – because I have had radiation and cancer in that breast before. So, March 9th is the day. I had to schedule around all the things I do – like editing newsletters for my quilt guild and the church.

Today is Valentine’s Day and my family received the following postcards in the mail. I used hand dyes and antique kimono fabrics and silk. On Mia’s and Miles’, I stamped I love Mia and I love Miles and also some Os & Xs.

Radiant Sunrise vs radiant breast.

Thursday, February 10th, 2005

I got the call yesterday and I DO have breast cancer again. I have non-invasive ductal carcinoma in situ. I have had this twice before so I know the routine. In the left breast, it was so small, I only had lymph nodes removed and then had radiation – that was 17 years ago. Eleven years ago I had the same diagnosis in the right breast, went in to have a lumpectomy, but the margins were not clear enough so I ended up with a mastectomy. Have to see the surgeon Monday to find out what happens next. I’m pretty sure it will be lumpectomy and radiation. There will not be a quilt titled Radiant Breast.

So I’m just trying to get on with life. I finished my Radiant Sunrise for the auction on Saturday. It is alittle wonky so I have to block it, do a label and a sleeve. Now I have to finish quilting a smaller art quilt that I will post tomorrow. I’m off to work in The Surface Design office processing conference stuff.

Here is Radiant Sunrise:

Merry Mardi Gras

Tuesday, February 8th, 2005

Oh! This is scary isn’t it? This has been an interesting day. I spent most of the morning with my breast in a mammography machine getting a needle biopsy done. Bummer! Have to hope that it is not malignant, but I have had breast cancer twice before – 17 years ago in the left breast and 11 years ago in the right breast. I will get the results tomorrow or Thursday.

At least this evening was fun. Our church does a Mardi Gras mass and Fat Tuesday pancake supper. At the mass we dress up – even the clergy – have a joke fest for the sermon, the altar is decorated Mardi Gras Style and dancing in the aisles to a live Dixie Land Band. Yee Ha.
