A Fun Day with the Brilliant Daughters

Lisa wanted to go on a day trip to some place she had never visited so we picked up Steph this morning and drove west to the charming town of Astoria where we enjoyed the ambiance of the shops and a great meal along with many cruise ship adventurers. I have never seen Astoria so bustling with activity.

That is the beautiful St. John’s bridge which we passed as we drove west. It is such a pretty bridge. We had lunch at the Astoria Coffee House and Bistro — I had great fish tacos. The place has some really interesting decor. A shelf up near the ceiling had globes lining the whole room.

I loved these whimsical folk art animal heads.

After lunch we wandered into shops and managed not to spend any money, but enjoyed looking. A vintage hardware store was especially interesting.

This sign tickled me.

Then we wandered down to the edge of The Mighty Columbia where Lewis and Clark ended their trek west.

It was so much fun spending the day with the girls and having great conversation. I am so lucky to have them both.

While we were there, I got a text from my friend Judy. She had already received the package that I sent yesterday. FedEx is fast. So she texted me photos as she opened it. So, now I can share the other chemo wrap that I made for her. It is actually called a Chemo Bandana. I used hand-dyed fabric and some really soft flannel.

Here I am modeling it.

Tomorrow, we have appointments to look at condos in three different areas of Portland so that we can begin to decide if that is the route we want to take.

Daughter Love

My daughter, Lisa, can make be cry so easily, but in a good way. She has a way of making me feel valued and loved unconditionally. Today, she wrote a blog post about my cover for Quilting Arts. You can read it here on her blog, Today is Going to be Awesome. If you go to her blog, you can click around on her website and see what an amazing artist she is. She got a few facts wrong. I actually only started art quilting about 11 years ago when I was 64.

We are meeting with the realtor in a bit and then I am heading out to NW Quilt Expo. I have work in 3 special exhibits. If you are in the Portland area, I hope to see you there.

The Lost Week-end

I invited Stephanie to come and play in the indigo with me on Friday. We had lots of fun.

She did this beautiful cotton gauze scarf.

She dipped a couple of pieces of clothing for herself and these socks for Miles.

I rehabbed a couple of butt ugly pieces of hand-dyed fabric. My favorite is the one at the top of my post. Here is the other.

I also dipped this piece of raw silk. It lost a bit of color in the wash which disappointed me, but it is still quite lovely. The dots at the sides are where I clamped the folded fabric.

I dipped another white shirt. This one was a rayon/linen blend. I didn’t get a photo, but it looks great.

We went out to dinner on Friday night and had a great meal at a new to us restaurant which was totally gluten free. On Saturday, I did a shopping list to get food for the week-end. We were planning to have the Portland peeps over for dinner on Sunday. I also got some work done on a symmetry/asymmetry presentation for High Fiber Diet.

I planned to go to two store. My first stop was Trader Joe’s. By the time I finished shopping, I had such a raging headache that I thought I would burst into tears. I went home and did not finish my shopping. I spent the rest of the day in a daze with the bad headache and some intestinal gas pain. I made dinner and ate a normal meal.

The pain in my stomach got worse as the night wore on. I finally had a major purge, if you know what I mean. At any rate. it was 5:30 in the morning when I finally got relief, but I was done in. I spent Sunday in bed sleeping, drinking sips of gingerale and taking bites of gelatin. By evening, I could stomach some chicken broth and a rice cake.

I feel much better today, but have severe abdominal muscle pain from the retching. So, I lost a couple of days of work in the studio and some quality family time. I hope this phase is coming to an end. After feeling so good for so many months, I am not happy about this turn of events.

A Special Guest and Some Quilt Talk

I have been missing, but I have been busy! The best thing was having my art quilt daughter, Kristin La Flamme, come for a visit. She is one of the Twelves, but I first met her when we took a workshop with Sue Benner at Art Quilt Tahoe. I was so impressed with her work and told her she would be an art quilter to be reckoned with. I also adopted her as my art quilt daughter! She is a brilliant artist just like me real life daughters. She told me about a new series of quilts that she is going to do and I was so blown away by the idea and the intelligent thought and creative ideas she has developed for them. I can’t wait to see them.

Yesterday, I picked her up at the train station. She left the rest of her family in Eugene with her parents. We headed for Terry Grant’s house and hung out with her for most of the day. She brought 20X12 quilts from herself and Deborah Boschert. So we had fun looking at them in person. I am collecting all of the quilts so that we can prepare them to be displayed at Quilt Expo in September.

This morning, before I took Kristin back to the train station, we went to Mill Ends.

She has done a lot of quilts for her Army Wife series using camouflage, and they were stationed in Hawaii recently so she was quite amused to find Hawaiian camo.

The quilt up at the top came home yesterday. I had forgotten about it. I made it as a sample for The African Fabric Shop in the UK. The owner sent Terry and I fabric covered notebooks as a thank you. They are made by a Primary School and use the batik fabrics from the shop. I love the fabric on this one.

I had good news last week. My quilt, Kelp Dance, was juried into Sur(face) Forward at The Art Center in Corvallis, and Moonstruck was juried into the Simply Red Show.

It has been a good week. On Thursday, we are heading to San Francisco to spend some time with family, especially, Paige. It is also Jayme’s birthday. We are going to stop in Grant’s Pass so that I can see the SAQA Sightline’s exhibit. Looking forward to that!

That Was Fun!

I had a great time spending the day with Diane Hock, yesterday. We met downtown for lunch. Steph joined us and had to leave to take Mia to visit a friend. She is really busy this week with 3191Q project deadlines. It was a bit rainy and a bit sunny, but we enjoyed walking around the Pearl district and doing a bit of shopping. Our first stop was Blick Art where I bought a tube of Invisible Glove. Has anyone out there tried this. Supposedly, you can coat your hands with this before getting into paint, dyes and other stuff and it will wash right off.

I also bought some Dyna-flow paint, some time easels for tiny art and some drawing pens.

Our next stop was Cargo Imports. This store is a visual treat for the eyes. The photo at the top is of some Chinese furniture in wonderful colors. I found some beads for my 3×3 project.

They had just gotten in a shipment of wood printing blocks. I bought these two. They are really awesome, especially that large wavy one.

We also went to Mill Ends our near my house where I found a Vogue pattern that I have been looking for.

Our last stop was the Moreland Farmer’s Market where I bought salmon and fresh veggies for dinner, some wonderful bread for Diane and Mr C and some raspberries for the freezer.

It was really great to get caught up with Diane and the happenings in my old guild and the art quilt group that I started and now has 40+ members. She left this morning for Port Townsend and then is going on to Victoria and then back to Oregon for further adventures before heading back to California.

I got the quilting done on the background of the red organza collage.
