My 1000th Blog Post

Woo hoo! I thought I wasn’t going to be able to post tonight, but my site is back on line so here we go with blog post 1000. There will be prizes!!

I thought it would be fun to go back and look at my first post. Here is what it said:

This is my first blog so please be kind. I enjoy reading the blogs of family, friends and perfect strangers so I thought I would jump into the fray. As my Blog title says, I am crazy for fiber. I make fiber art and I’ve been knitting forever. I hope to share my works in progress – both blunders and successes. Once I figure this out, I’ll add some photos. I like blogs with photos and few words.

I received 3 comments; one from my daughter, Lisa, telling me she would teach me to post photos; one from my good friend, Diane, who welcomed me to the neighborhood. But this was the funniest. It was from Mr Tasty Cake and said:

Crazy For Fiber-I must admit I was a little disappointed; I was hoping this would be a blog about shredded mini wheat addiction, nevertheless it was a joy to visit. Cheers and nice fiber!

So here is the deal, I have the older Spooner Lake Aspens which I showed a few blogs ago.

I am now constructing two new Aspen pieces. One is going to the Art for Autism auction. The other plus the older one will be give aways to two people who comment on my blog. I will do a random drawing on Friday.

Up at the top, you see the new trees that I made. I fused some of the new painted organza (silk for the person who asked – I never use synthetic) to plain organza and some to more of the painted fabric. This gives a more opaque tree with more dimension. I like it on that landscape, better than the other trees from the dye painted organza.

Many of you commented on the color of the sky in the new landscape I created.

So I got out my trusty Sherrill Kahn travel paint studio which is cute little bottles of Jacquard Dynaflow paints.

I used a couple of blues and painted the sky darker.

I like the original trees with this landscape which I have not quilted as yet.

Thank you all so much for helping with my design dilemma. It was fun to hear from so many of you. Tomorrow, I have to get back to stitching.

Fabric Audition

I am in the process of auditioning fabrics for another Aspen landscape. One of the best parts of being a fiber artist is auditioning fabric for a piece. I get so excited when I make a discovery in my stash of art cloth such as this dye painted organza. I realized that if I cut it in strips, it would make perfect Aspens or Birches.

I went to High Fiber Diet tonight, my art quilt group. I met Terry at the Mexican restaurant next door for dinner. I had a fabulous Pozole soup. We talked about our Line Dancing show and possible venues and our next show which will be View from the Top. I hope we change the name to View from Above.

For a little levity, here is my silly Scooter hanging out in the studio with me. He is always on the move when he is not prone so the photo is sort of blurry. He is such a good boy, learning new commands every day. He loves to play fetch, and I think he sometimes wishes he had younger humans.

Up with Pizza

Today was a grand day with the grand-kids, M & M. It was very hot — above 90°. We thought about going to the pool, but the idea of the crowd looking for relief just didn’t sit well with us.

After a quick scooter ride and Scooter walk, we ventured out for pizza at Pizza Schmizza. Miles ate two big slices of cheese pizza. Mia was satiated with just one.

Miles entertained me with funny faces.

Mia tried to ignore him.

Then it was off to the air conditioned movies to see UP. I knew nothing about this film and was pleasantly surprised to find the main character was someone of my generation. Mr C and I laughed and got misty eyed. M & M loved it. We all loved the dorky hero dog who had some of the best lines.

A Little of This and a Little of That

My days are so full; there is no time to just put my feet up and chill. I am, however, feeling some withdrawals from the studio time. I keep thinking I need to get down there and get to work. But, one look at these photos and you can see I need to do some clean up.

Look at this poster I received from Lisa for Christmas.

I love this. It was first produced and used in England at the beginning of World War II to offer the public reassurance in the dark days which lay ahead.

I have just about finished the first round of SDA conference workshop assignments and every one has received and e-mail or snail mail confirmation. Monday, I will start working on the next batch.

I took a break yesterday to attend my crit group. I didn’t have anything new so I took the reworked Urban Sunlight. Got some excellent comments and possible problems. It is what it is. I can’t change anything on it now. But will keep the comments for future work.

Today, I have been getting ready for tomorrow’s reception for my show at the cathedral. I am having an assortment of middle eastern treats, like dates, almonds and baklava!! I picked this up at a Greek deli – just baked. It is so good, you can see that we gave it a taste test.

I have lime green cups and some coordinating napkins.

I also made some business cards, just in case someone wants to get in touch with me.

I have to get up early in the morning. I am doing a gallery walk/talk at 9 am, followed by church. We will hang out and set up for the 1 am reception. If you are in the Portland area, I hope you will come by.

There is no way I am going to DC for the inauguration, but this will be a nice keepsake.

I hope to get some good photos at the reception and will post tomorrow.

The Wall of Hopes and Fears

My long time readers know that one of the most profound experiences in Israel was seeing the barrier wall that cordons off the West Bank from Jerusalem. There is a lot of art and graffiti on the Palestinian side and hardly any on the Israeli side. The wall has become a place for the Palestinians and visitors to share their hopes and fears. I have taken many of these images and some of my own to create my version of the wall. Click on it to read the different writings.

I had a bit of a disaster. I wanted to do the peace symbol in the colors of the Palestinian flag. I did cut the symbol from freezer paper and ironed it to a silk screen and did a test print. But when I printed on the actual piece, I didn’t get much of an image at all and then I couldn’t line it up to reprint. I decided to use a brush and give it the look of handpainted graffiti. I even added the drips. I was afraid I had ruined the piece, but I think it is going to work. I think I need to add some more red on the other side to balance the color. I also screened the coexist sign and a Hand of Fatima which is a symbol worn in the middle east by progressive people who see this as a symbol that is part of both the Islamic and Jewish religions. One of the members of our group called the wall ..the wall of not letting out just keeping in…

On another note, I found my way to Eva Marie’s blog: My Creative Diary – Colourful Research. She has done what I wanted to do, created the Non-award Award. She gives permission to steal it for your own blog which I have done. It is in my sidebar. If you click on it, you will go to her post about blog awards. I loved it.

At 7:30 pm, my show postcards were finally delivered by UPS. I am going to try to get them in the mail tomorrow.
