In Stitches Quilt Show

Yesterday, Mr C and I drove 4 hours over to the Coos Bay on the Oregon coast so that I could attend the opening reception of the In Stitches, Not Your Grandmother’s Quilts exhibit at the Pacific Park Gallery. The gallery is a big open space in quite new dental office.

The gallery is a lovely space, but not lighted that well. Quilts were hung on both floors. The women involved in putting this on were very gracious and welcoming.

My Pick Up Sticks was on the landing of the stairs to the upper level. It looked great all by itself.

My other quilt, Taking Leaf of My Seasons was on the long hallway.

This is Tina McCann from Depot Bay who won Judges Choice for best freeform art quilt. It is titled Saturday Market Baskets. I met Tina at Cynthia Corbin’s workshop last summer. It was nice to see her again.

Paulette Landers, who is a member of SAQA, and an incredible artist won Best of Show with this piece; and it was well deserved.

She was not at the reception even though she lives in the area. The quilting on this is exquisite.

There was also a traditional quilt category. No photos of those.

Now here is what took me aback about this exhibit. The jurors got to speak and give out the awards. They were both very much in the traditional quilting wheel house. They actually judged the quilts as in a quilt show. They talked about taking off points for this and that to reach their awards. There was nothing in the prospective that would have given a clue that this was going to happen. I did not expect an award. I am very happy with my two pieces and think as far as “art” goes they were in a small minority in this exhibit. I do not enter my quilts in judged shows. I enter them in juried shows which I thought this was. I will not enter it again. I think some people I know did not enter this year for that reason. It is too bad because this is a lovely venue and would make a great space for a real art quilt exhibit juried by artists not quilt police.

Mr C and I stayed overnight and drove back this morning. Even though it was cloudy and rainy, it was a beautiful drive and the fall colors were still quite vibrant.

This and That

This is Sky Blue Pink hanging in the Etui Gallery in Larchmont, NY. The opening reception was tonight. I was very excited to see this hanging there.

I got word today that two other quilts, previously rejected from shows, were juried into In Stitches in a gallery in Coos Bay, Oregon.

I am behind in my master class homework again. The assignment was to made a piece with lost and found edges. I am doing a row of fall aspen trees using hand-dyed silk. It is taking me ages to cut all the leaves.

This is the half-finished collage for the last Printed Fabric Bee theme, Carribean Ocean.

Here is my not so great contribution.

I printed blue waves on turquoise fabric, using an old carved wood block.

Then, I screen printed orange fish with an old thermofax screen. They were a bit dull, so I added some copper foil to them.

Living Life in the Fast Lane

It has been one of those weeks. I am working on a new landscape quilt whenever I can fit it in. I had a wellness check with my doctor on Monday and lunch with Lisa and Clay. On Tuesday, I had a meeting at Trinity to make plans for out multi-generational classes for this coming year. Yesterday, I spent the morning at the Expo Center hanging the new Oregon SAQA exhibit. That is Kristin LaFlamme in the first photo, hanging my Ode to a Tree Quilt.

Today, I spent most of the day at the show, looking at quilts, shopping and working at the guild booth. The guild has an exhibit titled a river runs through it. I have two quilts in the show. Here are a couple by Terry Grant and I, hanging together. These quilts have been out an about before, but fit the theme. I was disappointed with how this show was hung.

Some lovely hand dyed cottons from my friend Maureen from California. These will fill in some holes in my stash.

This is a fat quarter bundle of Marcia Derse designed fabrics. She creates one of a kind prints and then they are reproduced as a fabric line by her. Love these colors.

This is a blurry photo of the landscape quilt I am working on.

Here is the zigzag free motion stitching that I have done.

I think I will do some hand stitching. I found some perle cotton at the show and also some teal thread for the sky.

My Sky Blue Pink quilt made it to New York and has a spot on the exhibit postcard.

Tomorrow, I will be hanging out at home, waiting for my new iPhone and quilting the landscape.

Summer in the City

I am keeping busy. I did finish this piece. I am happy with it, I think!! I deliberately kept the composition and quilting simple as my goal was to flatten the picture plane.

I got good news this week, Sky Blue Pink was juried into SPUN, a fiber art exhibit at the Etui Fiber Arts Gallery in Larchmont, NY. I am happy about this because I really love this piece and it is hard to see the beauty of it in a photo.

It has been a meeting week, SAQA, Trinity class and STASH. I also had a really bad flare up of the arthritis in my left knee. I was doing very well for about a week. It is better today and I am so relieved.

I took my rejected neutral submissions in for critiquing. It was suggested that I change the orientation of Pick Up Sticks. I like it in a vertical orientation.

It is going to be a great week-end here in the Northwest. I hope you enjoy yours.

Quilt Knit Stitch- See the Quilts I Loved

I know I have been missing in action, but for a good cause. I helped to coordinate an information table at Quilt Knit Stitch 2015 for Surface Design Association. We set it up on Wednesday and the show ran Thursday – Saturday. We had a display of swatches of samples of surface design techniques by our members and lots of journals to peruse.

The opening quilt up above was in the red quilt show that debuted in Houston. I liked the more modern versions of the red quilts. That one was made by Betty Hahn, an artist that I really admire.

We were next to an exhibit of work by students in Jane Dunnewold’s master class. Some of these pieces were my favorites in the show. Here are some I especially liked.
