Recap of the Last 3 Days

BundlefromJane

My three days with Jane Dunnewold were fantastic. She left this little bundle of luscious complex cloth bits as a thank you.

On Wednesday, she gave a lecture to my guild on Making and Meaning. Jane is such a thoughtful and caring person as well as being an artist. I think she touched many people with her admonition to keep making, stay centered and find joy in your work. On Wednesday night, we had an SDA dinner out with Marci Rae McDade, the SDA journal editor and Amanda Melbostad, our area rep.

On Thursday and Friday, 20 of us had a workshop with Jane on Making Art, Strategies for Transformation. We alternated between arty exercises and writing exercises.  It was very intense and emotional for many of the participants. Tears were shed and secrets revealed as we shared our artistic journey and quests.

On Thursday, we dumped funky supplies on a big table to share. Our task was to create a container for our artist. I grabbed these supplies to start.

The copper scouring pad became the basis for my container. I began by collaging the insides with bits of ephemera abd adding sparkly purple yarn. Then, we stopped for lunch. I came back to the table and felt uncomfortable with my container. I needed it to be more comfortable and organized.

I lined it with soothing fabric and made little parts out of beads and sequin waste.

Here are some of the other containers:

It became very clear, as we discussed our containers that they revealed a lot about our selves. I realized that my chaotic container did not work because of the decisions Mr C and I are currently making about changing our living arrangement and I needed an orderly container to put my mind at rest.

On Friday, we did more writing about our work: history, process, content, things we love to do, things we are good at, if we were to be the optimum artist that exists in our mind, what would our work look like.

We also took some time to make marks with india ink and brushed on paper. It was amazing to look around the room and see the difference in the personal marks.

As I said earlier, it was emotional and tears were shed as we faced our fears.

I took Jane to Ann Johnston‘s home for her last night. I had fun seeing her gorgeous studio and newest work which will debut at the Baylor University Art Center in October. You can visit her site and order her new dvd, Color by Accident.

Today, I spent most of the day reformatting and updating my artist statement and resume for High Fiber Diet. It is supposed to be only 2 pages, but I am well over that. Some things will have to go, I guess.

The Lost Week-end

buttuglywithindigo

I invited Stephanie to come and play in the indigo with me on Friday. We had lots of fun.

She did this beautiful cotton gauze scarf.

She dipped a couple of pieces of clothing for herself and these socks for Miles.

indigosocksI rehabbed a couple of butt ugly pieces of hand-dyed fabric. My favorite is the one at the top of my post. Here is the other.

I also dipped this piece of raw silk. It lost a bit of color in the wash which disappointed me, but it is still quite lovely. The dots at the sides are where I clamped the folded fabric.

I dipped another white shirt. This one was a rayon/linen blend. I didn’t get a photo, but it looks great.

We went out to dinner on Friday night and had a great meal at a new to us restaurant which was totally gluten free. On Saturday, I did a shopping list to get food for the week-end. We were planning to have the Portland peeps over for dinner on Sunday. I also got some work done on a symmetry/asymmetry presentation for High Fiber Diet.

I planned to go to two store. My first stop was Trader Joe’s. By the time I finished shopping, I had such a raging headache that I thought I would burst into tears. I went home and did not finish my shopping. I spent the rest of the day in a daze with the bad headache and some intestinal gas pain. I made dinner and ate a normal meal.

The pain in my stomach got worse as the night wore on. I  finally had a major purge, if you know what I mean. At any rate. it was 5:30 in the morning when I finally got relief, but I was done in. I spent Sunday in bed sleeping, drinking sips of gingerale and taking bites of gelatin. By evening, I could stomach some chicken broth and a rice cake.

I feel much better today, but have severe abdominal muscle pain from the retching. So, I lost a couple of days of work in the studio and some quality family time. I hope this phase is coming to an end. After feeling so good for so many months, I am not happy about this turn of events.

This and That

simplyredquilts

I went to a High Fiber Diet meeting tonight, and many of us turned in quilts to be juried for the Simply Red show. Here is a pile of them in their travel bags. The jurying happens on Saturday. For the first time we have a panel who are not members jurying the show.

Before the meeting some of us met for dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant. I love this cuisine and since they use rice noodles and wrappers it works well for gluten free.

Terry Grant and several others had a Vietnamese Crepe which is made with rice flour and a spice that turns it yellow.

I had rice noodles, pork and all those lovely greens to put in rice paper wrappers which are then dipped in the very flavorful sauce. The pink plates each have a wrapper on them.

The very talented Bonnie Bucknam brought some of her handmade books and journals. They are so beautiful.

And that is about it for today. I spent much of today doing SDA Constant Contact e-mails. Tomorrow, I am going to a SAQA meet up at a gallery where Trisha Hassler has an exhibit and is doing an artist talk for us.

Summertime in Portland

deckparty

We are in the midst of beautiful long, sunny days. My favorite time of year! This past week-end, we had a dinner party on the deck. It was the wrap-up celebration for the Artists Among Us team. I made buttermilk rolls and grilled pork tenderloin with corn confetti to make sandwiches. None of which, I could eat (except for the pork), but every one else enjoyed them.

On Sunday afternoon, I hosted an SDA meeting. Everyone brings some food to share. I used the table runner I got in Jerusalem and picked some flowers from the yard.

The Rhodie Garden doesn’t have blooming Rhodies, now, but there are plenty of other summer flowers to enjoy.

This quilt came home from its travels around the US and to the Netherlands. I was so happy to see it. Still love it

I am also happy that Kelp Dance was juried into the Sur(face) Forward exhibit at the Corvallis Art Center. It just arrived home from North Carolina.

I have my simply red quilts ready to turn in for jurying. Here is our new hanging system.

Hanging wire is stapled to the center of the rod. I covered the stapled area with clear duct tape.

HFDrodsystem

Here it is inserted in the rod pocket. You can see that this makes it much easier to hand in those galleries that have a hook for hanging from the center of the art.

I made a muslin bag with French seams for each quilt. A plastic sleeve is sewn to the outside of the bag and has a photo and name of the quilt and my contact info. I blocked out my phone #!

So that is what I have been up to. Busy and enjoying life.

Still Catching UP

redgraycollagefabrics

It is taking me some time to get my mojo back. Things are still in a mess around here, but I have made some progress. I managed to unpack the supplies that I took to San Antonio and sort of straightened up my studio. I started working on a piece for the High Fiber Diet red show. I have had a piece in my head that is a collage of grey, black and red organza. I started to work on it, but needed more of the gray background. I went to the store where I bought it and they didn’t have just the right color. I am trying to make what I have work. I didn’t like the gray organza on white batting so I painted the batting black. I will have to see how that looks tomorrow, if I have time since it is father’s day, and I am cooking for the family.

Yesterday, I went to Miles’ graduation from 5th grade to Middle School. I really enjoy being at the school. It is such a great school where they really work at making all the kids feel welcome and important.

You will notice that Miles does not appreciate hugging. This kind of public display of affection, except from Mia, is uncomfortable for him. Here he is in a natural Miles pose with his diploma.

And here he is, obliging us with a smile.

Despite the Aspergers/Autism, Miles has made great achievements in his ability to interact with the outside world, even though it is uncomfortable for him. One of his teachers told Stephanie that he is different, but better. That made her very happy.
