A Clean Well-lighted Place to Create

LCSTUDIO4

I didn’t accomplish much today. I needed to take it easy as my knees were not happy. I got caught up on SDA work and this afternoon, we drove out to the airport to pick up Lisa who was flying back from LA where she was a judge for Quiltcon 2016. She had an amazing time and has a new appreciation for the art of quilting.

We got a tour of the studio that she has created out of the garage at her new home. It really is lovely. You can see the frosted glass garage doors in the photo above so even in the waning light this afternoon, it was light an bright. She does her smaller drawings and illustration work on the table above.

Here are the other work areas:

Packing and shipping is done here.

Her studio manager works in this area.

These flat shelves hold all of her past work. The doggie bed is for Wilfredo!

And here is her new easel where she does her large paintings. It is all very well designed with great storage and areas for all the tasks that need to be done. I am very happy for her and proud of what she has accomplished.

snowyscooter

We left California yesterday, stayed over in Grants Pass and arrived home today. We cashed in our free night at the La Quinta Inn. Scooter is a tired boy because he went to Mt Hood and played in the snow with Lisa and Clay!

It was hard to say good-bye to Paige, but I think she was ready for calmer days, following the excitement of the holidays.

We attended her swimming lesson at the Y. She is resistant to putting her face in the water, but I am sure she will get over it. She was having 4 days of lessons in a row. My son was responsible for taking her as Jayme was doing her pediatrician residency work. She looks so cure in her goggles!

Here is a collage that she made while we were there.

I want to say a few things about my knee. I was in excruciating pain most of the time we were there. It became difficult for me to stand from a sitting position and I had pain during the night while in bed. I had to use my cane all the time.

Then, miraculously, yesterday morning, I woke up without much pain and had slept well all night. I thought the pain I had been having was from sitting in the car for two days in a row, but I have arrived home feeling pretty good. I think the hustle and bustle of the holidays did me in, plus on Sunday, we went to the mall and I had a hard time keeping up with my long legged companions.

Anyway, I am going to try to pace myself. It was very difficult to feel so helpless and I had a several melt downs.

The drive home was very nice – cold, but no difficult road conditions. We did see lots of snow in Northern California and Southern Oregon.

Here is Mt. Shasta:

And, Southern Oregon looked like a winter wonderland.

We always enjoy seeing what I call the crayon trucks in Northern California.

It was a mostly enjoyable trip and visit with the very busy Mark and Jayme and their whirling dervish, Paige.

paigereading

After a lovely Christmas eve and Christmas morning brunch with the Portland peeps, Mr C and I left for sunny California to spend time with Paige and her family in San Mateo.

Our drive to Ashland was uneventful, but we saw the most awesome cloud formations.

There was snow in the hills around Ashland and as we headed south the next morning, we were greeted with the lovely site of snow covered trees.

The roads were clear and we made it to San Mateo by mid afternoon yesterday. We gave Paige an American Girl Bitty Baby and she is a great little mommy.

We went out for Japanese food last night and this morning hit the mall so Jayme could do some exchanges. Paige dressed as a butterfly for the trip.

At some point she ran out of energy and sat and rested while Mom and Dad looked at shoes.

We have had a good time reading to her and doing puzzles.

Mark has quite the garden in their backyard and brought these in for us to enjoy.

I guess you know you are in CA when you are picking the last of the tomatoes in December.

wrappedgiftsxmas2015

I managed to get some gifts wrapped today. I love the site of beautifully wrapped presents, but I am not very good at it. I love gift bags and tissue!

When I opened my Christmas wrapping storage container, I found two of my angels that were missing from the decorations box. I love these. The one on the right was made by my sister-in-law.

I finished all my shopping and was happy to find fresh dungeness crab which Mia had requested for Christmas eve. We are going to Lisa and Clay’s home for Christmas eve and brunch at Steph’s on Friday, then we are heading south to California for a few days with Paige and her mom and dad.

Not sure if I will check in again until we get there.

Happy holidays to all my faithful readers. Wishing you joy and peace in the New Year.

kandhouses

I have had a busy couple of days. Yesterday was the PDX SAQA holiday lunch at Elizabeth Bamberger’s home. Always a fun time, sharing food and fellowship with members. Before I left, Kristin La Flamme stopped by to drop off something and asked if she good photograph her Migration Story piece in my condo hallway. It is a totally wonderful piece about her personal migration story as an Army Wife. It will be in the SAQA exhibit at the Textile Museum in DC.

During the show and tell yesterday, Mary Ann McCammon, showed us this quilt made by women in Kenya where she taught a workshop for women suffering from obstetric fistula. This is a cause that Marianne has taken up and she does lots of work for the Fistula Foundation and her own artwork often references the problem. This is a third world problem where this problem is not addressed as it is in most modern medical care. This quilt, which has lovely story embroidery, will be auctioned off. I really admire Mary Ann for her work with this organization.

After SAQA, I was off to the dentist to get a needed check up for my impending knee surgery. So, I have that out of the way. And then, I crashed.

Today, I met my STASH friends for lunch and some sloshing around in the rain visiting some shops in the Portland Alberta area.

I found my daughter, Lisa’s, latest fabric line at the Modern Domestic store:

At the knitting shop, nearby, I bought this angora yarn to make an infinity scarf. I love that chartreuse and gray combo.

Tonight, Lisa and Clay took us out to dinner and then to a Baroque music concert at Trinity. What a gorgeous concert with solo voices that sounded like angels. The orchestra played the old renaissance instruments. So tonight, I am feeling mellow and happy having had wonderful fellowship and food and music. Tomorrow, I have to get some work done.!!
