A Busy Week-end

Saturday, October 6th, 2012

Last night, I helped host an opening reception at Trinity for our latest exhibit of political art, titled Occupy Politics, 2012. The artist is Allen Schmertzler. He is a gifted story teller through his art.

This one is titled Tea Party and you can stand and gaze at it for a long time and see many different things going on. Identifying the characters is fun. He has several caricatures done in acrylic ink that are fantastic. I particularly liked this one.

Yesterday, I got an early birthday present —a wii and a wii fit plus. I spent a lot of time getting it configured down in my office and then doing a fitness assessment. I had to create an avatar and when it assessed my weight and BMI, the avatar got fatter, too. Yikes! One good thing is that I got a wii fitness age of 56! I guess I am fat and fit. Next, I have to figure out how to do the exercises.

Tonight we went downtown to a lovely apartment on the 13th floor of a new building. It was very sleek and modern. I loved it and especially the views from up there.

I finished two more breast pockets for Melly Testa’s project. If you are interested making some, here is the link.

And here is another  3 x 3.

Super Saturday

Saturday, September 29th, 2012

Late this morning Mr C and I headed down to Newburg and had lunch at our favorite Oregon fast food restaurant, Burgerville. Then, he dropped me off at the Chehalem Arts Center for Regina Benson’s exhibit and lecture. He headed off for the Erath Vineyards to pick up our wine club edition for the fall.

Regina’s work is really breathtaking in its size and the detail she puts in to each piece.

I love the pieces that are hung on molded aluminum bars.

Her lecture was a slide show of photos showing how she does the discharge  and rusting on such large pieces. It was really educational. She was very generous with her information and gave each of us two swatches of fabric that had been discharged and rusted.

Here she is explaining to us how whe creates these tubes wrapped with shibori discharged silk.

Two views of discharged pieces hanging from the ceiling.

Tonight, Mr C and I had dinner with some old and new friends who were all connected via the old GE days. It was lots of fun.

Terry had an extra copy of Quilting Arts and so I have gotten to see my Rituals quilt of Scooter and Mr C in the magazine. It looks really great!!

I even found some time in the studio this afternoon and got some quilting done on the maverick piece. And did today’s 3 x3.

There are 3 months left in the year and I have yellow-green, blue-purple and yellow orange left to do. I am thinking I will go to the cool side next.

A Beautiful Summer Week-end

Sunday, September 2nd, 2012

We are having a lazy last week-end before the busy fall season of meetings and events start up. Yesterday, we went to Art in the Pearl, the annual festival in downtown Portland. I collected business cards from artists who live in or near Portland so that I can invite them to apply for Artists Among Us.

I took a few photos. This chair was so lovely. It had a footstool with it. The other furniture made by this artist, Victor DiNovi, was exquisite.

This glass artist, Morgan Madison, does some beautiful work. I loved every thing in his booth.

Here is my friend Teresa Rusch, in her both. She dye paints wool yarn and weaves gorgeous scarves and shawls.

I saw these collages and was struck by how similar the elements are to those used by fellow twelve, Deborah Boschart. The artist is Marcy Baker.

We sat down to have a cold drink and saw the top of The Henry, a building with cool condominiums. Mr C said he would like to live in the pent house condo at the top! It is a little out or our price range.

I also liked the canopy of leaves above us.

Here is today’s red-orange 3 x 3.

I also cut some batting and backs for the 3 x 3’s.

Tomorrow, we will have a BBQ with the family. M and M go back to school on Wednesday. I have a full schedule of activities coming up this month. Where did summer go?

I was so happy to finish the data entry for the Artists Among Us Exhibit and Sale coming up soon. I am now in the process of sending copies of inventories to the artists to proof read and making corrections where necessary. My next hurdle is to get the bar code scanner working. I have created bar codes for each piece of art and the dang scanner won’t recognize the scan. Supposedly, when a piece is sold, we scan the bar code and it opens that piece of art work in Filemaker and enter’s the date and marks it sold. As Mr C says, you will find a way – and I will.

To celebrate, I went on an art date with Mr C. We finally got to the Portland Art Museum to see the Rothko exhibit. It was fascinating to follow his artistic path from figurative painting to the very abstract work he did at the end of his career. He lived in Portland and graduated from high school so their is a great fondness for him in this city. I was blown away with how much pink and baby blue there was in his work.

We also saw the John Frame exhibit which was absolutely wonderful. He creates assemblages out of found objects and creatures that he creates and is working on a stop motion animated film — some of which was in a film about him. I think I will dream about these amazing installations tonight.

We then treated ourselves to a great meal at one of the down town institutions – The Heathman. It was a great end to our day.

I did manage to get two more purple 3 x 3s done. Some of you have mentioned how much you are enjoying this month’s offerings. I like them too, and I often say I don’t like purple.

Karen wonders if I have plans for these at the end of the year. Yes, I hope to figure out a way to use them in some installation or piece of work.

More High Desert Conceptual Art

Monday, April 16th, 2012

Continuing our first day of hunting down art installations — we stopped for some pizza and then headed out into the desert. The desert landscape, outside Twentynine Palms, is dotted with rundown little cabins. Each one is on a 5 acre plot. This land was deeded to people if they erected a building. Most of them were never lived in — they essentially held the spot. One of these cabins was used by a woman artist who created a whole story about a religious sect that had it’s own language and Bible.

This was interesting and seemed like a lot of effort was put into it.

Next, we drove up above the desert to find several sites. Here is the view from where we were hunting our treasure.

The main installation here was formed from two aluminum truck heads welded together. It created a mirror in which you could see a reflection of the rocks and surrounding landscape.

Another installation was this mesh boulder.

And there was this funny black ceramic vessel sitting amongst the rocks.

But, to me, the most fascinating site was the rock formation that was like a little trail heading off up the hill. This is totally natural and organic – not manmade.

We ended the day at Pappy and Harriet’s, a road house near Pioneer Town, where western movies used to be filmed. We had BBQ and listened to a great country and western band, The Big Blue Tractor.

I am having a hard time getting into my groove. Yesterday, I hit the wall, mid-afternoon. Today, I made it until 7 pm. I still have not gotten into the studio, but hope springs eternal!! I have had to work diligently on the database for Artists Among Us. There is always tomorrow.
