Is it Monday or Tuesday?

Tuesday, September 4th, 2012

Being retired, Monday holidays just confuse my life!!

This 3 x 3 is a hand-dyed silk organza that I folded and hand stitched in place. I don’t think my photo captured the texture of the scrunched organza.

Here is the other 3 x 3 for today.

It is fun to be working with a new color.

Today, I delivered a quilt to the quilt shop in Lake Oswego for the Quilt Expo coming up. All 288 of our 12 x 12 quilts will be on display. One of the coordinators wants Terry and I to do a bit with one of the local (sort of wacky) morning tv guys. He goes out to venues and takes part in some way. The premise is to help him make his own 12 x 12 quilt. Mind you, this will take place early in the morning – like 4 or 5 am.

I spent some time working on my kelp/water piece. I have to figure out how to arrange these and maybe add a little pizzazz.

I need to make a few more blocks, but it is coming along.

We have been glued to the tv since 5 pm when coverage of the DNC convention started. It was an amazing night – as one commentator said — an embarrassment of riches. I enjoyed every speech. As my daughter said on Facebook, these are my people!

Home again, Home again!

I am home from my whirlwind trip to IQF Long Beach. It was such fun, especially after Karen and Terry arrived on Friday to keep me company. We were so excited to hear the wonderful comments about our Twelve by Twelve exhibit. I loved hanging out there, listening to the comments. Sometimes I would introduce myself and then I would be held captive to answer questions!!

Here is a photo of the three of us with Del, taken on Friday. Del was so thrilled with the reception the exhibit received. I am so happy we did her proud.

On Friday night, Del and her friends, Sherry and Jim who live on the water in Long Beach, treated us to a Duffy boat ride and dinner at the Long Beach Yacht Club. Here is the boat. It is electric and very comfy.

Here are some of the sights seen from the boat. A putt putt boat with a mutt.

And a person powered Gondola:

It was high tide so we often had to turn around because we could not get under a bridge. We enjoyed navigating the canals of Naples and looking at all the beautiful homes.

Yesterday before I left, I saw this sight out my window:

It was a canopy for an Indian wedding. When I was waiting in the lobby, I saw drool worthy Indian saris on beautiful women. The men were wearing some cool outfits, too.

I arrived home last evening and Steph and Jack and Miles picked me up and we stopped for dinner at one of Miles’ favorite restaurants. Steve was at an anniversary party for friends that I had to miss because I got in too late and Mia is in San Francisco with Lisa and Clay. She will be attending the Young Artists Program at California College of Art for the next two weeks. She is having quite the summer.

Today, I spent some quality time with Mr C and Scooter who seemed to have missed me!!

I was excited to find this fabric from Frieda Anderson when I got home. I am going to use it for a piece for our Rhythm and Hues show.

I am only one day behind with my 3 x 3s. Here are two more.

IQF Long Beach

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

I flew to Long Beach today to see the Twelve by 12 Quilts and the Rituals exhibit. Seeing our quilts all together took my breath away, again.

It is always fun to interact with people viewing our quilts. Several told me it was the best exhibit in the show.

I love this poster with all of our photos.

Del Thomas, who is our angel for sponsoring the exhibit in the three IQF venues, was here tonight and I snapped this photo of her with the quilts.

I have a quilt in the Rituals exhibit. Photos are not allowed, but Leslie Jenison, one of the curators, took this photo of me with the Scooter and Mr C quilt.

I have a nice room on the lower floor of the Hyatt, overlooking the lagoon. It is very peaceful and quiet and since I have some SDA work to do, it is nice to have this space to myself. Here is my view.

This is yesterday’s 3 x 3. There won’t be any more until I get back home.

I have to get to work and then get some sleep. I am on duty at 9:30 in the morning at the SAQA booth.

This is the cover of the catalog for the Dinner at Eight Rituals exhibit which will debut at IQF Long Beach at the end of the month. Scooter and Mr C are in the slice that is second from the right!

You can go here and have a peek at all of the beautiful quilts. The show is sponsored by Moore’s Sewing in Long Beach and Havels Sewing will sponsor the show at IQF Houston.

It is such a pleasure to have summer ensconced in Portland. I spent most of the morning formatting a huge e-newsletter for Northern California SDA members.

I got down to the studio this afternoon to figure out what was wrong with my satin stitch using the zigzag stitch. After some research, I decided that the acufeed foot might be the problem. I switched to the applique foot and with a bit of tension tweaking, I was in business.

I still need to do the edging for the air piece. I want to print with the deconstructed screen that I made in Kerr’s class. It will be nice and warm for batching tomorrow so I am hoping to play with that.

Tonight, I went to a beautiful concert with Mr. C — part of the Oregon Bach Festival. It was a choral concert. The first piece was a Bach Mass; the second piece was A Child of Our Time by Michael Tippett. It was amazing. Here are the notes about the piece:

Compelled by the needless suffering he witnessed in World War II, British composer Michael Tippett created the modern choral masterwork A Child of Our Time. Its story concerns an act of justice in a time of war. But its effect is one of urgency and somber beauty, like the work it was modeled upon, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. Tippett integrated American spirituals such as Steal Away, Go Down Moses, and Deep River in place of the Passion’s chorales to reach the deepest levels of our common humanity. Its haunting narrative and rich climaxes embrace both the shadow and light of our collective whole.
We had a great dinner out before the concert. And here is today’s 3 x 3.

NW Vibes Show in Portland

Thursday, June 7th, 2012

I had a busy, fun day. This morning I joined the STASH group at Beth’s for coffee and catching up. Then, we took Gale out for lunch. Five of us had the roasted eggplant sandwich at Ernesto’s, near Beth’s house. It is so good.

Back at the house, I did some more sorting and purging. I have a sizable amount of unfused scraps which could be used for scrappy quilts. I am happy to say that I have found a couple of charity quilt groups which will take them off my hands.

Next, we were off to downtown Portland and the ArtReach Gallery at the First Congregational Church where our High Fiber Diet is displayed. I was so thrilled to have several friends show up for the show. I think this is the first time that I have had non-quilter friends attend a show reception. It was great. Here are a couple of shots of the show taken with my iPhone.

That is my quilt, second from the right.

It is a very nice space and the quilts were hung very nicely.

Then, we were off to have dinner at one of our favorite restaurants, Lauro Kitchen. Oops! It is closed. The owner just decided he has had a nice run and sold it. Another restaurant will open there in the fall. We will miss it. So, we backtracked and went to Nuestra Cocina, an upscale Mexican restaurant. We had a very delicious meal and will be going back.

Another 3 x 3:

I am quite enjoying the orange!!
