Demolition Derby

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

I just checked in with Steph. Chester had his leg amputated today, but he can’t come home until tomorrow. She took M & M to visit, but he was quite out of it from pain meds. Did you know that they use patches for kitties, too. Mia is struggling with this, but Steph thinks she will be fine once he his home, and she can see that he is still going to be Chester. Thanks for all your good wishes.

This morning Hans and his demo crew arrived to deconstruct our bathroom and closets. Here is the before:

The shower is an enclosure to the right of the tub. It was a bit noisy, but they were very meticulous about sealing off our bedroom area.

Here are the sinks and the tub waiting for a new home, perhaps with Habitat for Humanity:

And the pink tile is in the dumpster:

So, I keep waiting for the day that my life gets back to normal, whatever that is. But, not so far. Yesterday was spent moving out of the bathroom to the guest bathroom. Today, I was just in a state of suspended animation as I dealt with the reality of having men in and out of the most private area of my home!!

I did make it to Weight Watchers. I forgot to report that I only gained between 2 and 3 pounds on the trip. I was back down more than a pound today so I trudge on towards my 70th birthday, hoping to lose at least 10 more.  I walked in the door from WW and found a package from Kristin containing lots of German chocolate — fortunately, I have found a way to incorporate chocolate into my diet!!

I think the best way to deal with the work crew is to hideout in my studio so. tomorrow, I am planning a clean up day. Then I can get to work messing it up again.

A Pretty Good Day

Weigh-in: Stayed the same. I have had to curtail my walking because I have Plantar Fasciitis in my right heel. I have been so grumpy this week, and I think it is the lack of endorphins from my usual walking pace. Not only do I have to curtail the walking, I have to wear ugly shoes with support — no Crocs, slippers, sandals or bare feet. I have to do stretching exercises and ice my heel. It does seem to be getting better

Bathroom Tile Update: I spent some time at the tile store today, and picked out the tile for the linear mosaic. A couple of these are metallics. I think it is going to look really cool and watery — which is my plan. They are now creating a sample of the mosaic for me. Now, what about the floor?

New Camera: I received my new camera today. It is a Canon PowerShot S5IS, the same camera that Terry and Reva have. I have been so impressed with their photos so I indulged myself so that I have a better camera for our trip coming up next month. Here are some photos I took late this afternoon. You can see them all on this Flickr set. I love the detail of the water in the first photo. Wish I could duplicate that for the next 12 X 12 challenge.

Had to put a little political stuff in here!!! The tree below is a Japanese Maple that is just starting to leaf out. It is such a beautiful tree.

Tile Update

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

I thought I would share the results of our tile design work. We met with a designer at the tile store. She showed us these extra large subway style tiles that are really reasonably priced. I think we will do those vertically with a band of the mosaic running around the perimeter of the bathroom, where there is tile. There will be a half wall in the shower and we may do that entirely in the mosaic. Steve wanted to warm up the room by  having the floor use warmer colors. She suggested this porcelain tile that looks like fabric. The color picks up the caramel color in the mosaic.

But, when I was looking at my photos, I was really taken with the black version:

The nice thing about those tiles is that they have a bit of a texture so not as slippery, and they come in a variety of  shapes and sizes – rectangular and square. I would really like to do small ceramic tiles in a caramel/black combination. So, we will keep looking.

Italian Food and Stylin’ Faucets

Monday, April 7th, 2008

I spent the morning cooking Italian soups. I have been finding some fabulous sounding recipes from WW that require a slow cooker. I haven’t had a slow cooker since the Age of Aquarius so yesterday, I bought one and it was on sale — that is always a good thing. the one I used to have was sort of beige and brown as I recall. I like the look of this pot – fits my kitchen. It contains an Italian beef and lentil soup. I like to have soup in the freezer or ready to go on Mondays as we have a class at 6:30.

I also made a double batch of Italian Zero points soup. A cup of this will stave off hunger or it makes a nice lunch by adding some meat or beans. The house still smells like Italian seasonings.

This afternoon we went to a nearby plumbing store to look for fixtures for the bathroom renovation. This set is by Hansgrohe, a German company. They are right next door to the Duravit company which manufactures the sinks we are getting.

The second set is made by Danze, an American company. I really love the square shower head.

We are getting rid of the tub in the bathroom and having a larger, walk-in shower. There are a lot of options for showers — jets that spurt from the sides of the shower, called body sprays, huge rain shower heads. the plumbing can get very complicated and expensive. We are going to try to keep it simple and elegant.

Tomorrow morning we interview the last contractor. In the afternoon, we are meeting with a designer at the tile store. I hope I can fit in some time in the studio.

The Hunt for Tile

Saturday, April 5th, 2008

We have been interviewing contractors for our master bathroom renovation. We know that we have to get busy and make some design decisions – one of the most important is the tile. Today, I found this bathroom on the web and it got my creative juices flowing.

The green tile is glass which is very pricey, but they have mitigated this by using it with plain white tiles. I love the clean, modern look of this.

We have looked at a couple of tile places, together – Ann Sacks and Pratt and Larson. The latter is a local company that produces tiles that are sold in tile stores across the country. Their show room is a veritable plethora of tile eye candy.

Steve stopped at another store that he really loved and felt would have what we wanted. We went there today. Oops! Not for Gerrie. I could see why he liked the store. It was nicely organized with displays of what went with what. Almost all of the tile was in earth tones and very traditional or arts and craftsy. And, there was not tile everywhere like Pratt and Larson. He was sure they must have something I would like. The salesman, after listening to what I wanted, whispered, “Have you been to Pratt and Larson – that is the store for you.” I just laughed. So off we went – back to Pratt and Larson.

These are the tiles that I am interested in for our mid-century modern home.

These are glass mosaics. Aren’t they cool? They look like little quilts. They are 8 X 8 inches and very pricey. These two are my favorites:

So I am thinking that I can use these mosaics as accents with plain subway or square tiles. We are meeting with a designer at the store on Tuesday. We also have to come up with something for the floor.

Otherwise, I have had a very quiet week-end. I didn’t even make it downstairs to my studio. I think that tomorrow, after church, I will get back to some work. I have a bunch of things that need quilting.
