More Quilts!

Monday, August 14th, 2006

i promised to share a few more quilts from the APNQ show. So here they are:

Best of Show; Kitty Corner by Janet Fogg of Lake Oswego, near Portland.

Apnq3

She also did this quilt which I personally like better:

Apnq2

This was Best Traditional; Springtime Roosting Robin by Lynda Lynn of Newman Lake, WA I love this quilt. The colors were fresh and unusual.

Here is a close-up:

This was Best small; Blueberry Chrysalis by Heidi Lund who also won Best Wearable.

I enjoy making quilts with a nature theme so I enjoyed seeing the following quilts:

Apnq10

Apnqcoral

Apnqfish

Apnqspanishmoss

Apnqzebra

These horses are pieced and running in snow. I think they are really lovely.

Apnqhorses

I also loved this piece called From Lugano to Zurich; a pieced European village scene; my photo is a little blurry.

Apnqvillage

This was a nice Hawaiian piece; I love how the outer motif is used in the center, only smaller:

Apnqhawaiin

This traditional quilt was very pretty:

There were some fun quilts, too. Mar Lou Weidman had two; this was my favorite:

This was fun and funky:

Apnqgirls

This one is for DebR. (Note the red shoes.)

Apnqredshoes

I meant to post this one last night. I really loved this quilt. It is hard to see the detail of this, but I found it to be different and new and quite innovative. You will just have to trust me!!

This one was quite interesting, too:

Apqnmodern

I was excited to see three friends from Santa Rosa, where I used to live ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù Colleen and Judy who taught me how to dye and Diana, a good friend from my old guild. All in all, it was a great show. I think the quality of the work was excellent. I did notice that the judges were more traditionally oriented and so I think the judging was skewed towards quilts that weren’t really innovative or more sophisticated in design. Just my opinion!!

To Seattle and Back

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

Stash (Second Tuesday at Somebody’s House) took the train to Seattle on Friday to attend the APNQ Quiltfest at the Seattle Center. Here Terry and Gale in the back and Beth and Terri in the front settled in for the trip. Terry Grant is already at work on a mola! We later moved to another spot where we could sit facing each other and enjoyed wine and snacks.

Here we are crossing the Columbia into Washington:

The train arrived an hour late so we went out for dinner at a Mediterranean restaurant and I got this photo of the Space Needle at night on the way back to the hotel:

Here is the Space Needle from our hotel window:

I only got a glimpse of all that Seattle has to offer and I really want to go back so I think Mr C and I will spend our anniversary there next month.

The quilt show was pretty good. I will say that I did not get my socks knocked off by the contemporary quilts. Overall, I think the quality of the traditional quilts was much better. We ran into these fellow bloggers, Nikki and Melissa:

I’ll share some of my favorite quilts over the next few days. I think my faves were of this style:

Home in Portland

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

It is so wonderful to call Portland, home. Yesterday, Steph and M & M picked us up at the airport. It was perfect to come home and sit on the deck with family around.  M & M came for lunch today and stayed with us while Steph did some errands. I got very sleepy, but managed to revive myself with a diet Coke. I must stay awake to watch Project Runway tonight.

These photos arrived in my e-mail, today. Veni Sancto Spiritus is now hanging in its new home:

So I have breathed a sigh of relief.

I wanted to share some pictures from our field trip on our last day in New York. I love MacKenzie Childs pottery. I first discovered it at Nieman Marcus in Palo Alto back in the 80’s. I bought one piece. A few years ago, we went wine tasting in the Finger Lakes and stopped by their location in Aurora. I bought one of the fish platters. We were there late in the day so we didn’t get to take the tour.

Here is the entrance:

Macchilds

The signature motif for MacKenzie Childs is Courtly Check and it is everywhere! I love it!

Courtlycheckwalls

Courtlycheckumbrellas

This is the original farm house which you can tour. Every room is decorated with MacKenzie Childs stuff. Every room is gorgeous and eclectic with  modern art and a mix of antiques and modern furniture and wonderful fabrics. When you are in the showroom, it is a bit overwhelming to see all the patterns and items, but in the house they are very tastefully used in the decor. We were not allowed to take photos.

Macchildsfarmhouse

The landscape is gorgeous too. The farm overlooks Cayuga lake. There are sheep, ducks and other poultry wandering about.

Macchildswillows

I came home with these things ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù this Courtly Check metal tray and serving set.

And this casserole which is joining a fish platter from my last visit:

I leave you with this very gorgeous item ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù a lime green silk comforter!!

I am so excited about the upcoming week-end. The members of STASH are taking the train to Seattle on Friday afternoon for the APQN Quiltfest.

Reunions

Tuesday, August 8th, 2006

Note: I am such a dork. I wrote this post as a draft before we left NY and forgot to post it. So here it is!!

Before, I forget, here is a link to the metal sculptor and his artistic family that I posted about yesterday – Frog Pond Art.

My main reason for visiting New York this week was to attend my 50th high school reunion and a family reunion. On Friday night, some of the  out of towners met for dinner with our significant others. There were 11 of us ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù I was excited to see and old friend, Peggy, who now lives in Tacoma, WA. I hadn’t seen her in ages. Also joining us was our Episcopal priest classmate who now lives in Montery, CA and his wife Ann. Another surprise was our classmate Gregory who everyone thought was dead or in prison because even his family had not hear from him in 25 years. He lives outside Atlanta. Two of my good friends, Evie and Tish rounded out the group. I had my camera, but was having too much fun yakking to remember to take pictures

On Saturday, we met at a park in my hometown for chicken BBQ. Here are some class members enjoying the picnic lunch in the t-shirts that I made. The t-shirts were very well received.

Reunionlunch

See the back of the guy in the green hat? He is wearing braids and and Indian arrowhead around his neck. His name is Art. He has been driving trucks across the country and told me he loves Oregon. We sat around and chatted and caught up with everyone until about 3 pm and then made a mad dash to get cleaned up and changed for the evening festivities. At 5 pm we sat through a presentation including lots of music and introduction of those having a reunion. We were the honored class because it was 50 years. We went on stage and had a roll call and did a little presentation. I also sang in the alumni chorus which was fun. Here is a photo of my high school. The main building has not changed over the years:

Before too many of us left, we went out on the front steps and had our photo taken.

Fiftysixers

I always get freaked out about how big my head looks!! I think a total of 23 -25 showed up at one time or another. There were 32 in my class and four have passed away. One of the greatest things was connecting with teachers from as far back as second grade.

Yesterday was the family reunion and frankly it was anti climatic. We didn’t have a good turn out and I didn’t take any photos. I was actually quite exhausted from the previous day.

Mr. C and I had a great day today. We went to Aurora, NY on Cayuga Lake to the home of MacKenzie Child’s pottery, which I love. Pictures tomorrow, after we get home. We are leaving on a jet plane early in the morning and will be back in Portland by noon!!

On Carbohydrate Overload

Sunday, August 6th, 2006

I am in Central New York and on serious carbs and limited steps. I think I got in 8000 on Friday, but yesterday and today have been a disaster!!

We are staying at this B & B near my sister, Carole. The breakfasts are great, but are basically carbs and the coffee is weak so I have to go to Carole’s house and brew a pot of high-test.

Quagmire

This is the Quagmire Manor B & B and I don’t know how it got its name. Here is the path leading to the porch:

Quagmirepath

On Friday morning, Mr C and I took our walk up to the park at the other end of the lake from my sister’s home. Here are some pics:

First, is this sign in her neighbor’s window – love it!

There is a sculptor who lives here. He does really fun and funky metal sculptures out of discarded metal. Here is a bird piece and some frogs.

Birdsandtoads

This is his workshop and pile of junk metal for supplies: Clickable for larger view.

His home sits behind a custom stone and brick wall with sculptures of interesting heads.

And look at what is going up on the road in to the park! I love trees and here is a nice grouping.

Once in the park, there are these old circus wagons – I’m not sure where they came from or why they are there.

After a walk around the park we stopped at Crane’s Plantation – a nice garden shop. Here are some cool photos of their wares:

In the afternoon, My sister Judy and I went to see this show in Groton:

Here is a view through the windows. I didn’t ask to photos inside.

Pat Dolan who is on the Artful Quilter’s web ring has two quilts in the show and Holly Knott who is on the Quilt Art list has one. We loved looking at these. My sister who is a traditional quilter was very intrigued by the materials used and the quilting.

Yesterday was my high school reunion and today was a family reunion – more about these later. The pizza is here – more carbs!
