Quilting Obama

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

I belong to the Fiber Artists for Obama group. We decided to make a quilt to hang at the convention. We are making 12 inch blocks and using Obama words as a part of the design. Susan Shie has done an absolutely fantastic block. She says that Obama has found his way into her work over the past year. You can see some of it here.

I have taken a photo of Barack and made a thermofax screen and printed on various colors of fabric. I am going for an Andy Warhol vibe. I am going to select 4 colors which will be stitched into a 12 inch block. I will stamp hope, yes we can, believe and change on the individual pieces.

i am not sure if I have the right color combinations. I might have to do some more printing tomorrow. I need to get it in the mail by the end of this week.

But not until afternoon, STASH is coming tomorrow for our monthly meeting. My daughter Lisa and her adorable dog, Wilfredo, and her friend Diana flew in from San Francisco today. On Friday, she and Diana are borrowing the Jeep and driving to Seattle where Lisa has a how opening at Velouria.

Tonight, we had dinner at Park Kitchen in the Pearl, after which I went to the Columbia Stitchery Guild meeting at the Contemporary Crafts Museum where I was introduced as the president elect. What was I thinking? Well, I have a year to ease my way into the job. Reva is going to work on the newsletter. The Guild only meets 4 times a year, how tough a job can it be? Famous last words.

Hanging a Small Quilt with Bamboo

Monday, June 9th, 2008

When I joined High Fiber Diet here in Portland, I discovered this method of hanging small quilts, which I love. It works especially well for the small vintage Japanese fabric collages that I do. I have some small quilts made over the past few years sitting in my studio that I am starting to give as gifts and some need a sleeve or a method of hanging. I like this method because it is something that a person can take home and hang on a couple of small nails.

Here is one that I finished this week-end. I made it when I still lived in Santa Rosa. I call it the Chico’s Bird of Happiness because it was taken from a Chico’s t-shirt.

I purchased some bamboo poles from IKEA. I bought red and lime green. I think they had blue, too. You can also find these at Michaels and JoAnnes. Sometimes, I buy bamboo stakes and paint them.

I cut the pole to the size I want. Then, I stick t-pins through the pole to make the holes. I leave the pins in until I am ready to add the beads. Sometimes the bamboo will split, but, I just use some Elmer’s glue on it when I am finished.

I use beading thread, doubled. I bury the knot in the seam of the front and back. The I pick up a bead, remove the t-pin and go up through the hole and into another bead, then back down and finish off.

This same method could be used on a larger quilt by using a dowel and drilling the holes, I think.

I am feeling like such a putz. I missed two show deadlines last week. I have no one to blame but myself. The trip to Israel took a lot of time — 2 weeks there, a week preparing, at least a week to recover. We also have this bathroom renovation going on which is quite distracting. So I have my excuses, but it comes down to my own indifference that has gotten me into this box. I have schemes and dreams and ideas in my head. I just need to get back to a more dedicated work ethic.

Any body else in the same boat? How do you work your way out of it?

Blue Skies!

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

After several dreary gray days, the sun came out today, and we saw blue sky

We hauled out the cushions for the deck furniture and spent some time outside. M & M came over to spend some time so that their mom and dad could have a date. It has been a rough week for Steph. Mia tells me that Chester is very happy and bouncing around on 3 legs.

Mac and cheese, apple juice and Popsicles were served alfresco. Here are some M & M pics.

Both of them made their own summery fashion statements:

They also took great pleasure in playing with these huge leaves from a shrub in the front yard.

Oh, and look what showed up in the front yard on Friday — we have the makings of an al fresco bathroom out there.

I thought the name of the portapotty was so funny:

My Quilt In NC Gets a Visitor

Friday, June 6th, 2008

My friend, Judy, who lives in Georgia, is in Durham, North Carolina for a wedding. I suggested she might like to take a side trip to Cary to see the PAQA South Art Quilt exhibit at the Page Walker Art Center. She did and sent me some photos.

Here is the center. I had not idea that it was such a quaint old building.

Here is Fragments of a Life with a neighboring quilt.

And with a woman who was at the art center serving refreshments. Judy said that she liked my piece! Isn’t she cute?

Thanks, Judy!!

I have accomplished quite a bit over the last few days. I removed the binding from the 12 X 12 water challenge piece and replaced it. It looks much better. I have still been organizing and sorting stuff that was moved for the bathroom/closet renovation. I have a lot of clothes that don’t fit me (too big) and I need to decide what is going to Goodwill and what I might be able to sell on consignment I also got my office cleaned up. When my studio gets too messy, the mess migrates next door to my office. Tomorrow, I will tackle the studio cleanup.

They have completed the demolition of our bathroom/closet and have started framing the new configuration. I can now get a better idea of how large my closet will be. They have been working in such a way that we have been able to sleep in our bedroom. The only problem is that I have a pretty long walk to the guest bathroom in the middle of the night! Speaking of which, I wanted to post this photo of our other bathroom which is even more vintage looking. I will never take this one out. We do want to paint the cabinets another color. I don’t like the dark bronze color. This photo was taken before we bought the house.

Demolition Derby

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

I just checked in with Steph. Chester had his leg amputated today, but he can’t come home until tomorrow. She took M & M to visit, but he was quite out of it from pain meds. Did you know that they use patches for kitties, too. Mia is struggling with this, but Steph thinks she will be fine once he his home, and she can see that he is still going to be Chester. Thanks for all your good wishes.

This morning Hans and his demo crew arrived to deconstruct our bathroom and closets. Here is the before:

The shower is an enclosure to the right of the tub. It was a bit noisy, but they were very meticulous about sealing off our bedroom area.

Here are the sinks and the tub waiting for a new home, perhaps with Habitat for Humanity:

And the pink tile is in the dumpster:

So, I keep waiting for the day that my life gets back to normal, whatever that is. But, not so far. Yesterday was spent moving out of the bathroom to the guest bathroom. Today, I was just in a state of suspended animation as I dealt with the reality of having men in and out of the most private area of my home!!

I did make it to Weight Watchers. I forgot to report that I only gained between 2 and 3 pounds on the trip. I was back down more than a pound today so I trudge on towards my 70th birthday, hoping to lose at least 10 more.  I walked in the door from WW and found a package from Kristin containing lots of German chocolate — fortunately, I have found a way to incorporate chocolate into my diet!!

I think the best way to deal with the work crew is to hideout in my studio so. tomorrow, I am planning a clean up day. Then I can get to work messing it up again.
