Going in Circles

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

You didn’t think that I would make irrigation circles that look like the real thing, did you? I spent most of the afternoon, fusing silk fabrics to start a smaller version of the irrigation circles. I made two copies. This one is about 18″ X 21″.  I am having lots of fun with this.

However, while I was pulling out silk fabrics, I found a discharged piece of silk that is just yelling at me. I put it on the design wall and I keep looking for fabrics to work with it. So I feel pulled in two directions. Can I make two pieces at the same time? Oh, and don’t worry, I don’t think that lime green is working, either.

I haven’t posted a photo of Scooter lately, so here he is, doing what comes naturally, sleeping. His winter coat is at least and inch and half long, now. He looks like a little tub of lard!

In Plane View

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

High Fiber Diet is doing a show titled Bird’s Eye View. I looked through my photos taken from planes. I cropped out a section that looked interesting and printed it in black and white. I took it to CopyMax and had it enlarged to the max. You can see by my shoes how large this is. I will start with this size, but I think I want to make one larger. I will have to slice the photo and enlarge each section and then tape them together.

I am so excited about the possibilities of this layout. I can’t wait to get started. I want to do some hand stitching when I am on a trip later this month so I need to get at least one put together. Woo hoo!

Yesterday, Mr C and I went on an art date to the Portland Art Musem to see the China Design Now show. It explores the explosion of modern design in many areas  including architecture, print and clothing. The architecture is amazing. My favorite items in the show were these large birds beautifully adorned with organza rectangles that had been stitched like pojagi with French seams. So gorgeous. The fabric was laid over a metal frame like feathers.

We had a lovely dinner out at one of our favorite restaurants where we sat at the bar and had a good time chatting with the young bartenders, who doubled as our waiters. I had lamb spiedino with sauteed spinach and pickled red pepper. The lamb melted in my mouth. We shared a grilled Jerusalem artichoke, red onion and arugula salad.

We stopped for gas on the way home, and the Lexus would not start. We got a shove into a parking spot. I used the AAA app on my iPhone. It took about a half hour to get help. But after a battery charge, we were on our way home. This morning, Mr C took it for a new battery. We were wondering why the automatic key entry was not working very well. Every thing is working perfectly again. We have had the car for 7 years. It had the original battery. Pretty good.

Flash Dancing

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

This is a detail of Green Flash. I finished it today. So, I am flash dancing. Here is the full image.

I felt this piece needed something to give it some focus so I added the little squares of green silk in an undulating pattern which I stitched with matching thread. I love the counter point to the linear pattern of the quilt and the bit of whimsy that this detail adds. It made me happy to to this today.

For those who don’t know why I have titled this Green Flash. There is phenomenon that happens when the sun sets over the ocean and supposedly, just as the sun dips below the horizon, there is a green flash.

I found this photo from Coastranger on Flickr. It illustrates this phenomenon.

I also have finished my chapter for the book. I just have to write a bio and an artist’s statement for each of  my other pieces.

Art Every Day in a Book

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

This arrived from Amazon today.I saw it on another blog a couple of days ago and ordered it immediately. The book has 10 different topics that rotate through the book — from color psychology and aesthetic philosophy to the proverbial argument over whether cats and elephants really can paint. I did some marathon reading tonight to get caught up to day 6. They are really just short thoughtful readings with occasional step by step directions for an art exercise.

Interesting fact from the book: did you know that da Vinci was a vegetarian and bought caged birds so that he could set them free?

I accomplished quite a bit of editing and fluffing of my chapter for the Twelve x Twelve book. I am about ready to send it to the group for their critique.

I also made a lot of progress on green flash and hope to finish it tomorrow. I had hoped to finish it today, but spent more time writing than I expected. I am contemplating an additional design element, but am fearful of  over-embellishment taking over again.

I really need to finish it because I have another piece I am yearning to do plus I have the blue, white and a touch of black to do for the next Twelve challenge.

Life is full of possibilities.

Multi-Tasking

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

As  I have mentioned, I have a plethora of things to get done in the next few weeks. Today, I felt like Maxine and her computer. I spent most of the day at the keyboard. I was sending out e-mails to guild members and typing up the guild website edits for the web-mistress. I spent most of the morning working on my chapter for the Twelve x Twelve book. It was more fun filling in details and editing it once the rough draft was done.

I spent some of my afternoon in the studio working on Green Flash. I am happy to announce that all that glitz is gone or covered up and I have it squared up. I trimmed off the satin stitch binding. I think I need to rip out some of the quilting lines and then I can do the final quilting and edging. Here is how it looks today. Just another wonky Gericon quilt!!
