Checking In

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Just a quick check-in before I finish packing for our trip to SoCal. We are driving to San Francisco tomorrow to spend a couple of nights and check in with Mark, Jayme, Lisa and Clay. Then on to Santa Barbara for a little R & R in one of favorite places. Our next destination is Twentynine Palms, out in the desert to spend some time with Mr C’s brother and his wife. We are going into LA on Saturday to hear Brahms Requiem at the Disney Theater. We will head back towards Portland on Monday. I am looking forward to some sun and dry air.

On Friday, I went to a sale of wonderful fabrics in the studio of a fellow surface designer. She has moved and needed to destash. That top fabric is a lovely shiboried silk organza.

This is a navy organza that has some black shibori. I think I can have some fun with discharging this.

And who can’t use some nice black silk charmeuse and plain white organza?

Saturday morning, Steph made me a delicious brunch for Mother’s day. Here are some of the goodies:

The adults had a lovely baked egg dish with cheese and asparagus.

Mia is enjoying the tasty lemon millet muffin.

Miles is waiting patiently for every one to come to the table. The kids got mini-Dutch baby pancakes instead of the egg dish. It was all lovely and enjoyed with Mimosas.

I have been having lots of intestinal problems causing a lack of sleep for some time. It has been getting worse. I had some tests done last week and it seems that I have a recurrence of the H. Pylori bacteria. So, tomorrow, I am starting a week of daily doses of antibiotics and an acid blocker. I had the treatment 15 years ago, but I guess it can come back or never really goes away. I hope it works.

I am taking my laptop and will check in with our adventures on the road.

This and That and Then Some

Friday, May 6th, 2011

It has been one of those weeks — coming and going and regrouping after the latest violation. I am on the schedule for cataract surgery in 2 -3 months. I had a good visit with my Dr. My blood  pressure was 128/68. We all did a happy dance. My hair is red again. I have done a lot, but still feel so far behind in things I need to get done.

Above, is my display at Artists Among Us at Trinity. I love the folk art that is sharing space with my kimonos. Here are some photos taken last night at the artist/volunteer reception. Tonight was the gala where people start buying There were lots of red dots going on to the art work. Nice to see.

This is a painting by  a new Latino artist who is showing with us for the first time this year.

Some of my fiberart friends are participating this year. These are quilts by Diane English.

And, these are by Linda Christianson.

Maarja Paris has quite a bit of her felted work in the show. I love the bowls that she makes.

We bought this water color, Last Leaves, by Rosemary Carr, a member of the parish. I love it.

This art is composed of several smaller pieces that make a cohesive whole. He had each one priced individually, but I think someone bought them as a group because there were red stickers on all of them.

This is a beautiful black and white photo of aspens in the fall in Colorado taken by my friend, Danny.

These four water colors are really beautiful. This photo does not do them justice. They are quite large.

We are really proud of the quality of work this year. Here is an over view of the hall. We have several large metal sculptures by the artist who did the one in the center of the photo.

I used my new/used Canon Rebel to take the photos. I don’t think it is as good as the Nikon that was stolen, but the Canon’s get good reviews and I was able to get a good deal on a used one. It will do for now. I took these photos outside Trinity last night.

Back here in the neighborhood, it is the end of the school year for Reed College. This week-end is Ren Fair. The campus is closed and all sorts of shenanigans ensue. And structures like this one popped up all over the spacious lawn.

Keeping On

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

I thought I would share my purchases from the great quilt store in Canon Beach. It is my kind of quilt store — great surface design books and hardly any traditional quilting fabric. I love to purchase sale fabric for backs for my art quilts. These were all 50% off. I love the batik on the top.

I found some spicy prefelt that I think I can use for the next Twelve by Twelve quilt which I plan to felt.

They had lots of gorgeous Japanese fabric and accessories. I found this great sashiko thread.

Remember my discharged alternate universe piece that has hand stitching? That blue toned thread is just what I needed to get me working on it again.

The large circle on the right has rainbow perle cotton.

I have been looking for something appropriate for the alternate universe and I really love how the sashiko looks.

I have a very busy week ahead of me. This morning, I had a guild board meeting. This afternoon, I had to deliver my work for the annual Trinity Artists Among Us Festival, and then stay to help check in art and start arranging the goodies. Tomorrow morning, I am getting my summer red color done and then in the afternoon, I am going to see the eye surgeon who will do my cataract surgery.

The week continues with appointments, except for Thursday. Thursday night is the artist/volunteer party for AAU and Friday night is the opening gala. On Saturday, I am doing a demo on printing on fabric with real leaves.

There will be lots of photo ops so I hope my new camera gets here. I ordered a used Canon Rebel from a very reputable camera shop in New York that I have used before. I am really missing my good camera. It should arrive on Thursday.

In our urgent need to finally  secure our home, our latest purchase is a keyless lock for the back door which has been our problem. It will automatically lock after a few minutes and will require a code to open. I think this is a great option.
