Wanna Help Me?

I need some advice about my Reflections piece, which is now Ripples and Reflections. Here it is quilted and edges finished:

Ripplesnreflections

I got an idea that since it reminds me of reflections in a woodland stream that I might add some sheer organza leaves. I had to pin them so ignore the pins, but here it is with some sheer leaves added:

Let me know what you think! This is also a test to see how many of you are paying any attention to what I am doing!!

  1. a missing word:
what about MORE transparent leaves? or are your organza leaves more translucent than how they read on the screen? this mode of looking at work has serious limitationas i think.

  2. what abaout making transparent leaves and strewing them? some could lay flat, others might come off the surface. the transparency might not read as heavily as the current leaves seem to (on my monitor anyway).
What do YOU think it wants? hmmm?

  3. michelle says:

definately go with the leaves, I love the addition…it adds depth and a more finished look. I love all of your work and have been reading everyday to see what you are making next! You are such a motivator!

  4. gerrie says:

Wow! Thanks for all the input. I am at church working at the moment. I will try a few more arrangements and post them and then decide whether to add them or not.

  5. Lisa says:

Hi mom, i like it better without the leaves. leave it simple. the colors are lovely.

  6. Cheryl says:

I vote with Karoda, the leaves muddy the piece. And I think her idea to hang them from the edge is a good one.

  7. Kathie says:

I like the leaves–to for it!

  8. Just to let you know I’m here… The leaves are a good idea, but I don’t like where they are either. There are tons of great ideas to try out in the comments already, so lets see some other options!

  9. Jenni Paige says:

Chimming in late….I really like the transparency of the leaves, but to me they look like they are all pointing the same direction. I would lay them more randomly, some sideways as though the current is spinning them. And more spread out, but not evenly spread. Really makes me want some organza to play with!

I love the leaves. I agree that the placement needs some testing. How about all bunched up in the upper left corner, as if they are on a branch just peeking out in the foreground? I also like the idea of not attaching them down completely, so they become a 3D element. I read your blog every day and enjoy it very much! And I’m enthralled with the quilt a day project. Wow!

    Hi Sis,
I’m writing only to let you know that I do pay attention to what you do. But unlike the others – I would to hate to criticize my sister’s work, but since you asked – I agree with those who think it needs a third dimension or some beads or metallic thread.
    Looking forward to Rehoboth!

  12. Valeri says:

I love using transparent fabrics over things and I think your quilt would benefit from it, especially if you make them in different sizes and move a few out to the edges more. Like your colours! And its fascinating the way the shapes show through the transparent stuff. I do think you have to play with placement though! I also like the piece on its own though I’m not happy with the plain blocks. Would have liked it to be the reflections all over! Just my opinion!

  13. filambulle says:

The leaves are ok (I agree you should think about the placement)… but I’ld like snother element: a shimmering organza in a light (argenté?) color, spreading rays of light to emphase the “relexion” theme.
It’s hard to explain things like that in words… and harder in foreign langage!
I like to follow the process. Good idea!
    Have fun with this piece!

  14. Debra says:

I like the idea of the leaves.. but where everyone else say spread them out more.. I’m gonna say use fewer. Only 3 or 5. And then, I agree add a third element. I’d lead toward a compliment of the leaves.. and add one tree branch in the reflection (using the darkest organza.)

  15. DebR says:

I don’t care much for the leaves as-is, with them scattered singly around the quilt, but if you turned them into more of a line element, with more structure to how they’re placed and with some of them overlapping each other, I think I would probably like them.

Even in nature, where things are seemingly “random” you’ll notice that things like leaves will actually bunch up into patterns according to wind currents, water currents, etc.

  16. Karoda says:

Gerrie, take my opinion for the lone dissenting one that it is, but the leaves do not add anything for me. Try hanging them off the bottom?

  17. Emily says:

Yes, definitely go with the idea of the leaves flowing with the woodland stream. If you keep them bunched up, add more. I agree with the others adding a third element would help tie the piece together and make it more visually exciting.

Also, the piece stands on it’s own without the leaves. I think you should go several layers or not at all. Otherwise, interesting piece! 🙂 I like the title, too.

  18. I like the leaves but agree – more spread out perhaps?

  19. ginger says:

I’m here!! I’m here!!! I like the leaves too…but think they maybe should be in a curved row echoing the curves in the piecing and maybe layered so the brownish are on top of the dark green…. creating shadow and depth and
( aren’t you sorry you asked ME ) not entirely attached to the top just tacked ?? W/beads?? wow now I’ll go..Ginger

  20. Liz says:

I love the leaves..they add the ‘IT factor”

Hey gerrie, I know you don’t know me, but I read your blog everyday…my nonnie is teaching me to quilt and I love it. I unfrtunately HATE the quilting part. My grandma only quilts by HAND, and I have NO KNACK for this at all…do you machine quilt your pieces?
If you have any tips or ideas or resources that would help me learn how to machnine quilt, i would love it if you could pot it to my blog at:
    lizzyjane.blogspot.com
    Thanks!

Oh cripes, I’m sorry that appeared twice

  22. mary manahan says:

    Hi Gerrie,

I think the leaves are a good idea..can you spread them out a little more? I might even think about a third element to embellish the quilt. I once took a fabric stamping class with Lonni Rossi, and she said that once you add a third “layer” of design, it somehow clicks, and the dimesional aspect starts to work. (Can you tell I don’t do artspeak very well?)

    Maybe beads? Or foil? Thread?

  23. mary manahan says:

    Maybe a complimentary color?
