Beads, Quilting and an Opening Reception

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

cruciformsfused

That pretty much sums up my day. A trip to the bead store for beads for one of the textured pieces I am working on. I will post photos of those tomorrow. I am happy with what I found.

I got the cruciform piece fused and started the quilting. Then I ran out of black thread so I will be off to Mill Ends tomorrow morning. I am doing simple straight line stitching in a grid on this.

Tonight was the opening reception of our High Fiber Diet Show. It was in Hillsboro — way out yonder from where I live. So I drove across the river to Terry’s house and she drove out to Hillsboro. We took a back road and it was a really beautiful drive.

Here is my soaring piece in the show.

The show has been traveling for several months and so by this time in the year we are pretty much blase about the show and when there are not many people showing up, it is not that much fun. Still, it was nice to see this lovely arts center. The quilts were hung very nicely in two galleries — one upstairs and one down.

I am running out of time to get my work ready for Artists Among Us. I might have to scale back my plans.

Another Opening, Another Show

Gerrieandfireatrogue

I guess I lied when I said I would blog about the opening of our Elements show in Medford! I forgot to take the USB cord to download photos from my camera. The show looked fabulous. I was delighted to find my Sparks are Flying Quilt on this golden wall as you entered the main gallery. This was the first time that the Rogue Gallery has featured fiber art. It was quite a process, getting into the gallery, but worth it. I hope they will have us back with our next show.

We were so excited that a quilt sold last night!! Chris Brown’s Strata!

Here are some other shots. I get distracted at my own shows and forget to take photos.

There was a small exhibit of Japanese woodblock prints in another room. The artist was demonstrating the printing.

Here is what the final print looked like after all the layers are printed. It was fun to watch him and engage him in conversation about his technique.

Driving back to the motel, we saw these incredibly beautiful black clouds in the Ashland sky.

Yesterday was beautiful for the 5 hour drive down, but today was miserably raining and then we got stuck in the middle of nowhere because of a traffic accident. We were in our car for over an hour – thank goodness for 3G and the iPad!!

I did some drive by shooting on the drive.

This one may become a thermofax screen.

Mr C has come down with some bug and took to his bed when we got home. I am watching The Perks of Being a Wallflower – with the following emotions – sad, mad, glad – so far.

Another Opening, Another Show

Sunday, November 11th, 2012

This morning, my High Fiber Diet friends, Mary Arnold and Bonnie Bucknam, picked me up for a drive to Tillamook to the Latimer Quilt and Textile Museum for the opening of our Rhythm and Hues show. First, we stopped in downtown Portland for brunch with Nelda Warkentin. She was in town from Maine to meet up with some old friends from Alaska before she and her husband head to Mexico for the winter.

The drive to Tillamook is very rural and woodsy. I always enjoy the scenery.

We had a good turn out of artists from our group and quite a few folks who came to check us out.

Terry’s Nasturium quilt, next to my Prairie Circles quilt, sold today. Congrats to her.

Here are some other shots of the show and artists hanging out.

That is Bonnie Bucknam’s quilt on the stage.

A beautiful felted stole by Maarja Paris.

Walter, the horse, a whimsical soft sculpture by Christina Brown.

A quilt by Carol Heist who does beautiful surface design work.

And that is that. I am tired after a very busy week. I am looking forward to a week with time in the studio. I only have a couple of appointments.

A Quick Check-in

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

I missed the debate tonight because I was at a High Fiber Diet meeting. I hear it was a good one! Terry did a great presentation on the design elements – figure, mass and space. We spent a long time talking about a new meeting space. It is difficult because our members come from Vancouver, WA in the north to Eugene, in the south.

I finished Paige’s sweater!! Can’t wait to see her wearing it.

And that is all I have to say tonight.

It’s Elemental

Saturday, September 8th, 2012

The High Fiber Diet Show, Elements, debuted today at the Woodburn Art Center. The usual suspects showed up — the artists. I think we had about 3 non artists show up before Mr C and I left to have lunch. The show looks great. Here are some photos that I took.

That is my Motherlode on the left. Next a piece by Karen Miller and then Bonnie Bucknam. The are all earth themed. The last quilt on the right, by Mary Goodson is a water theme.

That is my water quilt in the middle. On the right is a piece done by Mary Arnold. Not sure of the theme. It could be water or earth. The piece on the left is a fire theme by Diane Born.

The balloon quilt is by Diane. That is my air quilt in the middle and on the right is a water quilt by Catherine Beard. That is a beautiful piece.

Two fire quilts – on the left is by Carol Heist. It is really gorgeous. Then my fire quilt with which I am not at all happy. I didn’t take enough time with it. The piece on the right is an earth theme by Elizabeth Bamberger.

Earth on the left by Christina Brown and fire on the right by Mary Arnold – very different from her normal representational work.

Terry’s four quilts were nicely presented together. They are all the same size and really make a nice grouping.

This is Laura Jaszkowski’s air – I think – guess it could be earth, too.

This, I am assuming is earth. It is by Linda Christianson.

We have a couple of garments in the show. This is a gorgeous felted stole by Maarja Paris.

There were a few more pieces that I did not photograph.

This is Emily, Mary, Diane and Elizabeth, four of the artists.

Here is today’s 3 x 3.
