FAFC Collage

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

I have a deadline of Saturday to get my piece finished for Virginia Spiegel’s Fiber Art for a Cause Reverse Auction. I took the work in progress to California with me, but never took it out of the bag.

The first thing I did today was to add lots of orange and some brighter prints over the base fabrics.

fafcquilting

I did some very simple grid quilting, using a wonderful turquoise/orange Sulky thread.

While I was on vacation, I took my poor overworked Janome 6600 in for a tune-up. I picked her up today, and she is purring like a kitten.

For the final layer of the collage, I cut strips of the turquoise fabric which I have arranged on the collage. I worked really hard to get these so that they made a statement, but didn’t look like a haphazard mess. I still have to do some quilting on these.

Then, I will trim it and do the Sue Benner satin stitched edge.

Next, I have to finish my 18″ X 18″ piece for the SDA conference member’s show. It has to be postmarked by March 1, which is a Sunday! Since I am going to Eugene on Friday to attend an Oregon SAQA meeting on Saturday, I guess I have to get it in the mail on Thursday – Yikes!

Tomorrow, I have to get my teeth cleaned in the morning and then take down my show in the afternoon. I am supposed to attend a STASH get together on Thursday, but I may not make it.

And now, I am going to work on SDA registrations awhile before I go to bed. Ta!

And the Winners are:

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Liz Hinze, from right here in the Portland area, will get the funky valentine collage and Missy Jordan, from Louisiana, will get the Kyoto Hearts postcard. Missy, did you know that I my maiden name was Jordan? Thank you to all 39 of you who left me such wonderful comments and have inspired me to keep on blogging for at least another 5 years. Mr C drew the names.

I am quite busy trying to get some things done before we leave for a little soujourn to California. We are leaving early on Wednesday and heading South. We will stop at Coos Bay to see the quilt show at the art museum. Then we will keep driving south on 101 until we need to stop to spend the night. Thursday we will stop in San Francisco for a couple of days visiting Mark, Jayme, Lisa and her gal pal, Clay. Lisa has a show opening on Thursday night.

Saturday, we will keep on heading south to the Mojave desert and the town of Twenty Nine Palms where we will spend a week, hoping for some sunshine and warmer temperatures. Looks like it will be a bit rainy and in the 60s. While there, we are planning lots of side trips with Mike and Ann, my husband’s brother and wife. We are going into Oceanside one day to see the Visions Quilt show. I am so happy that it has been extended this year. It is usually over by the time we go down in February. I will have a studio available for doing some work so I will take some supplies with me.

I started work on the collage piece. First, I fused all the fabrics with Misty Fuse.

I used some Japanese fabrics for the background. I usually use dupioni silk.

Here is a sneak peak at the work so far. I think I will have to stop at this point and take it with me.

As I have mentioned, the High Fiber Diet group is doing a show titled line dancing. Each piece will have a lime green horizontal line. I rotated Indigo Construction and am contemplating entering it. I will remove the dangling threads, if I do this. What do you think?

I am Woman, Hear Me Roar

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

I am so exhausted with the multitasking. I would love to spend a week with nothing I have to do! I have been juggling the SDA conference registration, working on the 12 X 12 challenge piece and preparing and teaching a workshop and still doing the shopping, cooking and laundry for the two of us.

I must say that teaching the workshop was really a lot of fun. As usual, I over planned things. But, I wanted them to have options. There were 9 or 10 people at the class. The classroom was not ideal for spreading out and working, but the classrooms were being used for another all day program. Everyone seemed to have a great time. I think Angelina fibers were the big hit of the day!!

Here are some photos of work. They really loved the fiber postcards most of all.

This is my youngest student – 16 years old. She was great at dealing with all the mature students and teacher,

My friend, Diane, made this lovely valentine with bits of lime green. I love it.

I came home and put my feet up for an hour, had some lunch and headed to the studio to finish the chair piece for the 12 X 12 reveal tomorrow. I have been working on it all week and had a breakthrough yesterday. I had it done except for fusing and stitching. I am very pleased with the end result. Be sure to check in tomorrow for the reveal.

I have to get cleaned up. Mr C is taking me out to dinner. Next on my plate is a major clean up of the studio and reorganizing and setting into the newly painted office. I also plan to finish my piece for Virginia Speigel’s Fiber Art for a Cause Reverse Auction. I think she has been ready to give up on me, but she knew that I have a very busy schedule. She has gone to Texas to be an artist in residence so I will have the piece ready for her when she returns.

You’ve Gotta Have Heart

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

I am slogging through life. I can’t seem to get my energy back. I think I might have a sinus infection. I did manage to get down to the studio and do some class samples for the fabric valentine collage class that I am teaching at the end of the month at the cathedral. I don’t really like to teach, but they wanted me to do something to tie in with my show.

To warm up, I played with some Angelina fibers and some cute flowers that I found at Michael’s.

I cut a piece which I glued to white organza using this fantastic valentine glitter glue.

I stamped some hearts on a blank card.

I collaged some of the Angelina fibers and other Valentine ephemera and stamped and glittered, etc. I call this the Glitzy Valentine.

And this is my favorite that I call my Mod Valentine collage –

This is hand stitched and mounted on velum Bristol board with gel medium.

It sort of felt good to get back in the studio, but now I am feeling blah again. I did get to the paint store to select paint colors for my office. Mr C is done with the dry wall. We are going to paint the red brick fireplace and the wainscoting a lighter color and I selected a pretty green for the walls. He got the fireplace primed this afternoon.

Today is my darling Lisa’s birthday. I am so happy that she has a wonderful new lady friend in her life who is treating her very well today. Happy birthday, sweetie! I remember on the day she was born, it warmed up to 20° in Schenectady, NY. It had been 15 below for days.

I am off to make a salad for dinner. Mr C is picking up cracked crab and sour dough bread.

Potpourri of Activities

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

Here I am, coming to you from my new IBook Photo Booth. I picked up the new computer yesterday and have been having getting familiar with the new things, like the photo booth – a camera in the laptop.

Yesterday afternoon, Mr C and I drove out to the country to cut our Noble Fir Christmas tree. We met the most delightful owner, who took us way out to the back forty where trees had not been cut and found us the perfect one. We also learned a lot about Christmas tree farming. We will go back there from now on. The tree is up with the new color lights, waiting for M & M to come and help me with the decorating.

This morning, I went to the quarterly Columbia Stitchery Guild meeting. We had a wonderful speaker who is an expert in Kumihimo, Japanese silk braiding. She gave a slide lecture on the history of the braids. We also had our annual silent auction. I scored this gorgeous scarf, made by Carol Heist. The photo was taken from the computer and does not do it justice.

I have been still getting the run around about the fabric. After two promises of a return phone call on the status of my order, today, I e-mailed them and said to cancel the order. Tonight, I got an e-mail saying it had been shipped and they would send me the tracking number tomorrow. Ha! I will believe that when I see it. In the meantime, I came up with another way to print large pieces of fabric that is working very well. I spray basting glue to a large sheet of poster board and then brayer fabric to it, trim and print.

I have been stuck on a piece that should have been very easy to do. Perhaps, I have been over-thinking it. I wanted a collage for the beginning of the show which would highlight “Pilgrimage.” I have played with lots of different images and different backgrounds. I wanted it to represent a page from my journal, so I decided I had to do some handwriting. I am not ecstatic about my final result, but I decided that I had to finish this tonight and move on. I did a few lines of machine stitching and am now hand stitching with some lovely hand-dyed perle cotton.

Here is a close-up.
