iPhone Photography

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

My new iPhone has a feature that my old phone did not have. When I am listening to music, I can use other apps. I have been taking photos on my walk this week. I am also quite impressed with the quality of the photos. Late yesterday, just before sunset, I went down to the Rhodie Garden and got this photo of ducks sitting on a partially submerged log. You can click any of these to see them larger.

Here are the other photos I took yesterday:

Some geese swimming in parade mode

Hellebores are in bloom through out the garden.

Some Azaleas are also blooming.

Today, I found some other harbingers of spring.

I never tire of a mossy wall.

Last month, these orange plastic ribbons turned up in our neighborhood. We saw them on every street – some houses had several in one tree. We finally found out that they are for a neighborhood mom who is undergoing cancer treatments. The ribbons will stay until she hopefully comes home in remission.

Yesterday, we did the jurying of the Back to Nature show. We selected 18 of the thirty submitted pieces. The three jurors are only having one piece each in the show so that we could include more members. I think it is going to be a very nice show. My High Desert Aspen Grove will be part of the show.

I am still struggling with my studio practice. I am having a hard time getting it back to a regular schedule I know it makes me happier. I need to neaten up from my last project and get to work on two large pieces and the next Twelve X Twelve piece. The trip to Japan is coming up and I need to have some work done before I go.

I am too much into the Mañana mode! Then, tomorrow never comes.

Oh, Eau Finished

Monday, February 7th, 2011

It is hanging a little wonky, but, I am happy to say that I finished this piece. It needed to be 28 inches in length and, whew, it came out perfectly.

Here is a detail:

It will be fun to see it hanging with all of the other entries from SDA members.

I have a couple of things that I need to get done as soon as possible. One, is the next Twelve X Twelve colorplay. Here are the colors that Deborah selected.

Tonight, I went on a search in my stash for these colors. This is the best I could do:

The blues are pretty good, the browns are too warm and the green is not sage enough. I have lots of greens, but you know what greens they are, right — they don’t fit in this palette. What to do? Guess I will go shopping. I have no desire to spend time trying to dye or paint these colors.

I do think I have the start of a nice landscape!

I have a pile of 32 quilts in my living room. Tomorrow, we are going to jury our new High Fiber Diet show for Trinity, titled Back To Nature. Tomorrow night, M & M are coming to spend the night. Jack has an early morning meeting so I will feed them and get them ready for school. They have a late start day so he will pick them up and take them to school so that I can get to my pilates class. I hope Steph is having a good time in Savannah.

Show and Tell

Friday, February 4th, 2011

When I made the first piece like this (Sunset), it was pretty much trial and error. Since it was for the Twelve X Twelve challenge, I had to make sure it fit into that space. When I made the second piece, Allegro, I did not plan it as well. I decided to make the pockets a different size. I was not as meticulous about the piecing and the layout. Now that I am working on the third piece, I am realizing the mistakes that I made. I think I will take it apart and redo it.

Anyway, I thought I would share how I am doing this one. The first row of pockets is stitched two inches from the bottom.

After that each row is attached one and a half inches above the last row of stitches. I draw a chalk line on the background as in the first photo.

I then make a chalk line on each organza pocket, two inches from the bottom.

I line up the pocket chalk lines with the chalk line on the background and pin in place, overlapping about one quarter inch.

Each row of pockets is overlapped in the opposite direction from the preceding row. I neglected to do that on the Allegro piece — I think it made a difference. After the row of pockets is pinned in place, I do a row of satin stitching over the chalk line and trim the organza close to the stitching. I have not trimmed, yet, in this photo.

So, I got a few more rows done on this. I really have been futzing around too much and not having a good studio work ethic. I don’t know why! Winter doldrums, maybe.

Stephanie is leaving for Savannah on Sunday for a week to do a photo shoot. I can’t tell you for whom, but it is a very exciting venture for her. We will be helping Jack with M & M, but he is such a great dad, I don’t think we will be on call too often.

Have a good week-end.

Out of the Studio

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Yesterday, I did not get near my studio. Pilates, walking the dog, getting my hair cut, attending Miles’ third grade musical, late dinner after we got home — whew. This morning, I taught myself how to use iMovie so that I could upload some videos from the performance.

If someone had told me two years ago that I would watch Miles do two major speaking parts and sing about 15 songs with all of the other children, I would have said no way.  But there he was — making us all beam from ear to ear. His development over the past year has been remarkable. There are times when the autism is evident, but he is much more engaged with us, now.

I was going to upload the video of his portrayal of FDR, but the file is too large.

After a quick walk with Scooter, I met a couple of friends from Trinity to talk about the future of the Arts Committee. The chair for the past several years is stepping down, and we have not found anyone to take on the task — we are a group of artists who are willing to help, but not be the organizer!! I had an idea of someone who might take it on. We met with her, and I think it is going to work out.

Tonight, I finally got down to the studio and happily got four rows of organza pockets sewn to the background. So happy about that!!

Mr C brought in the mail today. I flipped through it and was astounded to see a my High Desert Aspen quilt on the back of a postcard.

It is for the SAQA Oregon show — State of Diversity — which is at the Heritage Station Museum in Pendleton, OR. A lovely surprise.

OK, I have rambled on long enough.

Treading Water

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

I have been playing around with my organza water squares. I did not have quite enough to cover the required size for the SDA member’s show – 12″ X 28″. So I had to whip up a few more tonight.

I need to get this finished so that I can work on a couple of other pieces that I need to have done before we leave for Japan in the middle of March. I am trying to stay calm and not work so fast that I make stupid mistakes!!

Today, I picked up my CSA veggies and found these – pomme d’or squashes. They are about the size of apples. I hear they have a really tough skin so it will be an adventure to cook them, but aren’t they cute?

Every Portland third grade class puts on a musical about Portland’s history. We enjoyed it so much two years ago when Mia’s class did it. Tomorrow night, Miles’ class will perform this show. I am really looking forward to it. Miles is playing the part of FDR.  Steph is coordinating all of the costumes.

I have had a long period of time free of sinus headaches and congestion. The regime of saline rinses and cortisone nasal spray seemed to be very effective. We are having cold windy weather, sunny, but very windy, and I have vertigo and a sinus headache tonight. This does not make me happy. So I am off to bed and hope I will feel better in the morning.
