Working on the Cross Layer

I have spent a lot of time today cutting crosses. I did manage to get in 10,800 steps. I also covered one of my design walls with gray felt. The other will be covered with black. Steph and M & M came over for a short visit and then we all went to the Westmoreland Farmer’s market.

I want to thank all of you who joined my silliness yesterday and posted a comment – especially those who have not commented before, It is always nice to meet a new friend in cyberspace.

I am not ready to put the quilt on the design wall just yet. I have to trim some threads and give it a good steam pressing. However, tonight I just had to place some on the crosses to see if my idea is going to work. My plan is to do a wash of the crosses across the quilt, placing the colors over their complements with the same mix of colors that are in the background. (Did that make sense?) Here is a photo.

Tomorrow, I have to compare my threads on hand with the colors of the crosses and run to the store to pick up the colors that I need to satin stitch the crosses. That will be  a huge task – the satin stitching not the shopping!

Gerrie, this is turning out beautifully. I like the way your quilting is sometimes perpendicular to the rest of it. What a lot of time you have spent on this. The crosses are wonderful…love the concept of having complementary colors!

    Gerrie,
What a delight to see this come together! It just glows. I can easily picture how it might look in its new home, proclaiming its joyful message for years to come. Jen

There is something whimsical about the way the crosses are dancing – what a happy piece, Gerrie!

This is going to be so beautiful when finished. And yeah you for getting in all of those steps.

  5. Wow! I’m imagining what a joy it will be for the receiving congregation to worship (or fellowship, or just BE) in a room with that quilt. What a great gift you have been given, and what a great steward of it you are!

I like the way you have arranged the crosses on the quilt. it’s looking good and with those colors its going to glow in the church. The satin stiching sounds like alot of work…but the quilting was work too. Soon it will be done and you can move on to a new project. I really like your work and am inspired by you to break out of my usual quilting projects.

Beautiful! The effect is both simple and startling. The colors are fantastic and uplifting…I’m smiling as I look at it.

  9. Wow! I disappear for a week and come back to see all this wonderful work you’ve done. I can’t believe how fast this quilt is coming together. It looks fantastic Gerri!

oh my, that thing is going to simply stunning! It’s such a simple concept, but I know that coming up with something simple that is so right is near impossible and most people wile never ever achieve. You must be so excited at how it’s working out. btw, I didn’t realize you could do such a big quilt with the escape hatch method.
