Gathering Stuff

Thursday, January 5th, 2017

Yesterday, I went to my new studio to get some things done for a couple of projects I am planning to do. I gathered some of my more heavy weight scraps and fabrics to piece for making the oven mitts. I also, pulled out some of my hand-dyed silk fabric to use for Laura Wasalowski’s silk stitch along.  We were to fuse the silk to wool batting. I didn’t have any so I used wool felt for one piece and a scrap of something that looked like it would be easy to stitch through. I prepared two backgrounds because I like to practice on one.

I also pulled out all of my Perle cotton in sizes 8 and 12. I am missing some colors I think I might want to use. I will need to go down the hill to In Stitches and do some shopping.

I didn’t accomplish much today because I was feeling a bit slammed. I went back to boot camp at the condo gym yesterday morning, and we did weight training. I am feeling it today plus the really cold weather we are having is aggravating my sinuses.

Last night I started a great class at Trinity – 4 weeks of studying the work of Bach. The teacher is an organ virtuoso and a Bach expert. We sat around our beautiful organ as he demonstrated many parts of a famous Bach toccata and fugue.  I took some photos of the organ and the Christmas decorations.

Some of you may remember the quilt I made from a photo I took of the pipes.

What is Normal?

I was finally able to get my studio ready for some major creativity to happen. We were able to assemble a large double sided design wall. But…..

As many of my long time readers know, I am very vested in politics and I am an unapologetic progressive. I have been spending a lot of time over the past month following the presidential campaign and found the ugliness disturbing. I believed the polls and thought for sure Hillary would be the first woma n president. My hopes were dashed a week ago today, and I spent much of the week wavering between panic attacks and sobbing. Yesterday, I decided I needed to get back to some sort of normal and because I have meetings almost every day this week, I needed to buck up. So that explains why I have been mostly missing.

While I have been keeping track of politics, I have been doing some slow stitching. I wanted to make a 7 x 10 piece for the SAQA trunk show. I cut up some shibori circles to use as jelly fish bodies and made the piece up above. Then, I reread the prospective and realized all the pieces had to be a portrait orientation so I started over!!! I am seed stitching the back ground right now.

Mr C finally figured out all the parts we would need to make a portable design wall that I had seen on the internet. It requires pvc pipe and fittings, U-bolts and foam insulation. Here are photos of the assemblage.

This is my daughter cutting the felt to fit the insulation. So glad to have her help.

This is a U-bolt!

The felt still needs to have some spray glued to attach it better to the insulation.

There is felt on both sides. It is 6 x6 so that it fits easily in the space I have to store it. It is very light, yet sturdy so I can pull it out for working. I am so happy with this. It was something I really missed in my closet studio! Next week, I hope to start on something big.

On Sunday, Mr C and I decided to get out of the house for an art date. We went to see the Warhol exhibit at the Portland Art Museum. Here are some images from that.

So, what is normal. My life has been so topsy turvy for a year, that I am not sure. I do know that I am feeling so much better. Getting my energy back. Working on the lower back problem. I want to be strong for the times ahead of us. I will end with this:

Radical Embroidery

I signed up to take Radical Embroidery at Oregon College of Art and Craft. It was a 3 day workshop. It turned out to be not that radical, but I learned a lot about using embroidery as an art form. The instructor was a delightful young woman from the CA bay area, Victoria May. Her website is here. Her work is a bit radical as she has a fondness for the gritty and industrial debris that she finds in her travels. I think that adding delicate embroidery to these found objects serves to confound the viewer.

On the first day, we learned different ways to create line in our work. The piece at the beginning of this post is my sampler. We used Dynaflow paint on canvas to  begin our work. Then I added lines in various ways. We used organza in our work. For this line, I painted organza which I tore into strips and couched down. I really like the effect.

The next day, we moved on to working with painted organza layered on canvas and we were to capture some things between the layers.

I had some previously quilted rusted silk which I cut into rectangles. Two pieces are under the organza and the middle one is on top. I am in the process of stitching the quilted silk pieces down. Then, I will add some interesting stitching to the rest of the piece. I am thinking of adding a bit of rust to this in some way.

Then we were introduced to stitching on water color paper. The trick here is to pre-punch your stitching holes with a needle or awl. For my piece, I stained the water color paper with acrylic ink and got some interesting effects by blow drying it. Click on any photo to see it larger.

I am in the process of stitching with variegated thread, following the design created by the ink.

On the last day, I had an idea that I just had to work on using some of the materials that I brought.

First, I painted the canvas with indigo Dynaflow paint. I forgot to get a photo before I started stitching, but you can get an idea from this photo.

IMG_2298

I had some indigo fabric with clamped circles. I cut out three circles for the composition. I also had a dark blue shibori organza which has black lines in it. And I also had a piece of Rymplecoth that my friend, Maris, gave me. It is more loosely woven than cheesecloth and is used for cleaning and polishing. She uses it in her felting. I dyed it a dark black. It takes the dye really well.

I used strips of the organza as I wanted some of the painted canvas to show to give a better value change. I ripped some holes in the Rymplecloth so that the organza can poke through.

IMG_2292 (1)

The top circle is on top of the organza and is couched down and stitched with silver metallic thread.

IMG_2297

The other circles are under organza and stitched with the silver thread. I have started doing some stitching on the organza and canvas and then I will tack the Rymple cloth down.

Here is the final layout which looks a bit messy, but I think I know where I am going.

I was feeling a bit overwhelmed earlier this week and wishing my recovery was moving faster. Yesterday, I had Mr C  help me get my sewing machine table back where I use it and pulled the Janome up out of hiding. It made me so happy, I almost danced. I think it is a symbol for the life I want to live and now, I am feeling so much better and have been doing better. I think I turned a corner.

All I did was shorten some clothes, but it felt good. My knee didn’t like the knee lift, but that will get better.

Trying to Cope

IMG_1874

I finished all the hand-stitching on this. I need some more hand work cause I am stuck sitting around here waiting.

Today was the day when I was supposed to get a new knee. Due to a miscommunication amongst my medical team, it did not happen. It has not been rescheduled and I am not very happy.

Let me back up and explain what happened. When I went for my pre-surgery check up, the Dr. I saw thought I should be evaluated for sleep apnea. This was a surprise to me because I have never had what I thought were the symptoms. I don’t fall asleep during the day and usually can keep going late into the evening. I got set up for the home sleep test. I failed it. It was recommended that I go to the overnight sleep lab for a CPAP titration. My team bent over backwards to get all my appointments done so that I could make today’s surgery date. I went to the pulmonary lab and did all sorts of breathing stuff in a glass box and I had blood drawn from an artery in my wrist.

The called me last week-end and said they had a cancellation in the sleep center and could I come in. Which I did. Here is the lovely backdrop to my room that night.

IMG_1844

I was fitted with a CPAP mask and took an ambien and went to sleep. They said I did very well and got lots of rem sleep. I moved on, meeting with my new sleep/respiration doctor and we talked about why I needed the CPAP at the hospital when I would be knocked out with opiate drugs for pain. She said my pulmonary breathing tests were great. Next day I met with my surgeon. We went over last minute things. I continued to do things to prepare for surgery like getting a manicure.

IMG_1851

And, then, I got a call from the surgery scheduler telling me my surgery was canceled. I was a mess. I cried and I think I might have screamed at her. I am not sure. It was a blur. I couldn’t understand what happened. With Kaiser, you can email your dr so I emailed my surgeon and asked for more clarification. He called me and said that my respiratory dr had suggested it be canceled because I had not had time to complete all the sleep apnea things. I said that I had. He said it was out of his hands at that point. I then emailed my sleep/respiratory dr. She said she had not done that. Well, it turns out that I had another dr, who I never saw, who was responsible for deciding what I needed to have done. He did not know that every thing had been rushed through for me. By the time, my dr talked to him, it was too late to get back on the surgery schedule.

On a positive not, the CPAP and I are getting along really well. It is very high tech with a modem and blue tooth. It sends data to the sleep center and I can download the data to an app on my iPhone so I can see how well I am doing. I used to get up 3 or 4 times during the night. Last night, I slept until 6:30- woo hoo. I think I am beginning to feel different when I wake up. I have less over all muscle pain. My only problem is lower back spasms from my sedentary life.

I am waiting for a call for my new date. I think they are trying to figure out how they can fit me in sooner than the normal 5  week wait. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

I had a nice mother’s day yesterday. I made brunch for Stephanie and her family. She brought me these beautiful poppies.

Lisa and Clay were not here because they are in New York for book signing gigs for Lisa’s new book The Joy of Swimming. She has interviewed swimmers and done her typical illustration of all things swimming. If you are a swimmer or know one, you should check it out.

Checking In

Monday, May 2nd, 2016

IMG_1856

Oh my! I have sure been missing in action. Preparing for the knee replacement surgery has taken up my time. I had to give up getting any quilts done for upcoming shows. What will be, will be. I have had too much pain and appointments and other stuff to tend to.

I have continued to do lots of hand stitching on this piece which will go to the SAQA annual auction. I think I can get it done.

Here is the progress of what I have been doing. Just some random big stitches to outline the center panel.

IMG_1822

Added some more seed stitches and French Knots.

IMG_1841

Added some orange French Knots.

IMG_1855

It is easy to work on this as I sit here in my ergonomic chair, watching TV.

I finished Winnie the Pooh. I still have to knit the neckline and stitch it all together.

IMG_1812

Part of what has taken up my time lately is the diagnosis of sleep apnea. I had to do a home test with things strapped to my body and head. Then, I had to go to the pulmonary lab and have blood drawn from an artery in my wrist to check Oxygen levels and I also had to do lots of breathing tests to check my lung function. My home test showed severe apnea so then, I had to go to the sleep study center and spend the night. I had so many wires attached to my body! It took 45 minutes to set it all up. I am still finding sticky goop in my hair! I slept with a CPAP breathing apparatus and it was great! I wanted to bring it home with me. But, I have to see the sleep Dr on Wednesday and then they will write up a prescription for me. They want me to use it for a few days before my surgery which is next Monday! I think the apnea has gotten worse since I have been immobile from the knee problem and have gained weight.

Today, I attended a class on what to expect at the hospital and post surgery. Tomorrow, I meet with the surgeon. I got myself a nice pedicure today and Friday, I am getting my hair cut and colored. Hopefully they will lat me until I get be out and about again.

I will try to check in again before Monday.
