Back in My Happy Place

downwarddogprint2

I have been either moping around or at the Dr’s office getting poked and prodded. I have a mysterious medical problem and the cause has not yet been found. I am having an ultrasound next week and hopefully I will get some resolution. I hope it is nothing and will go away.

Today, I needed to get out of my funk so I headed to the studio this afternoon to work on some pet postcards for Pokey Bolton’s project to benefit Friends for Life. You can read about it here. The postcards will be sold at IQF in Houston. Last year, they made more than $20,000.

I made two screens. One is Scooter in the downward dog position and one of my beloved Maggie, long gone.

Here is the Scooter photo that I used.

I am using scraps of my art cloth as the background. It will be fused to batting and have some quilting and then cut to postcard size.

On the Maggie prints, I want to free motion quilt, “Every inch a Terrier!” We heard one of the commentators at the Westminster Dog show say this, and we felt it fit our Maggie perfectly. The image is a drawing I did of her when  I took a print making class back when we lived in Wilmington.

So that is it from here for today. Hope you are having a great week-end.

Thursday This and That

Thursday, August 30th, 2012

Whew! I’m glad that is over! The RNC Convention that is. To keep my blood pressure stable, I have kept from watching it and only followed live blogging which adds levity to the proceedings.

My quilts arrived home from Southern California yesterday so today, I had to drive to Woodburn to return the two elements quilts as the show is going to make it’s debut next week. It is an hour each way, but it was a pretty day for a drive and I took the back roads rather than the interstate.

I wanted to show you the beautiful etching that I bought in Bodega at one of the galleries. The gallery reps the prints of Stephen McMillan. I was in love with all of his work, especially the larger etchings of the California landscape. Here is a link to his gallery. I bought a small print of trees that I now need to get framed.

When I got home from our trip, I found this beautiful fiber postcard in the mail from my friend, Connie Rose.

This afternoon, I got caught up on my 3 x 3’s. It is almost time to work with another color.

I am hoping to get to work on the water quilt tomorrow. I am attending a memorial service for the husband of a friend in the morning. I can’t believe that it is the end of August and the end of the week. Time goes by too fast for me.

The Quilt is in the Mail

There was a time when I made fiber postcards almost every day. For a year, I sent a fiber postcard for every event in the lives of family and friends. It was fun, but I have not done them in a long time.

I decided it would be fun to make a thank you card for the hosts of our boat ride and yacht club dinner while we were in Long Beach. They are the owners of Corky, the poodle prince, that Del Thomas spends lots of time with. I thought it would be fun to put them in their Duffy boat.

I also made this sunflower card which is a go to design for me, using my silk scraps.

I have been procrastinating on the rainbow fabric piece. Not sure what I am going to do and I don’t want to do too much cutting.

It is the last day of July and here is the last magenta 3 x 3. I used a lot of little scraps on this one.

And here is the July set.

I think I will go to the cool side for the next color.

Missing in Action

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Where have I been? Good question. Not working in my studio, that is for sure. I got my hair cut one day. I have had a lot of SDA work to do. Friday, Mr C and I went to the nursery and bought some plants. On Saturday, I weeded and planted some veggies and herbs. So, I have been busy, but nothing to write home about.

I realized that I had not posted the lovely fiber post card that I received from Cynthia St. Charles. She is a fantastic fiber artist and is doing lots of different fiber post cards. If you would like a chance to win one, you only need to go to her blog and let her know.

Out next Twelve by Twelve challenge, Spice, is due on the first of June. I gathered my ingredients tonight

I am going to do some felting. I need to run out and get some more needles for my embellisher and perhaps some ribbons and yarns to add to the mix. I like the way that bit of chartreuse, my favorite neutral plays with these colors.

My studio is such a mess. I have all my inventory piled on my work tables. I need to rephotograph every thing, as suggested by Sandra Sider. I also have work that I have brought home from several shows and events piled up there. I have been rather lethargic and need a kick in the butt to get organized. Some more sunshine and warm temps would help.

Last week when it was nice, Scooter and I walked down to the Rhodie Garden. It is in full bloom right now. Here are some photos that I took.

Changing Direction

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

Before the triple disasters hit Japan,  I pretty much had the next 3 1/2 weeks reserved for getting ready to travel there and two weeks there and a few days to get back in the swing here at home.

Yesterday, I was pretty much useless. I couldn’t get my mind around doing much and I was glued to the TV. I finally went to my studio late in the day and started putting away the fabrics I had used in the river piece. It was a big job because I had used lots and lots of fabrics. I finally finished that today.

Tonight, I made 4 fiber post cards to send to those who are buying books through my website. One is up at the beginning. Here are the others. I repurposed an older piece that was not working as a larger piece. They are all silk.

This morning, I went to Fabric Depot, the mega fabric store in Portland, to see a demonstration of the fairly new product deColourant. It is a product which discharges dye as it deposits a new color and it is relatively non-toxic. I had used the product and had some problems with the color washing out. The demonstrator was Nick Coman, a fiber artist from LA.

Here are some of the samples he brought with him. I was very impressed with the brightness of the colors in these pieces. He said they had all been washed.

This is a neat t-shirt.

This was a batik rayon scarf. The ginkgo leaves were added with de Colourant.

Here is Nick at work. The t-shirt he is wearing was done with de Colourant and had survived many washings.

OK, here is the secret. See that heat gun? It is very important to get the de Colourant very dry and then heat set at a high temperature. The heat gun does that very quickly for small areas. We watched that green de Colourant become brighter and more vibrant as he hit it with the heat gun.

And so, I had a pretty good and creative day. We had buckets of rain and thunderstorms and a brief tornado warning. I had to go out to pick up my organic veggies and I got soaked.

I want to do something for earthquake relief. I am planning on putting some work on Ebay. You can designate that some or all of the proceeds go to the Japan Earthquake Relief. I will let you know when I do that.
