Composing an Abstract Landscape

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

aspenlandscapebackground

I spent  a couple of hours in the studio this afternoon. It is still quite hot here in Portland and my basement studio is the coolest spot in the house. We have AC, but we barely every use it.

I used my shibori cottons and linens for the sky area.

The ground area has various shades of yellows, red and oranges and some wonderful printed indigo fabrics that Kristin sent me. I have been saving them for this piece.

The yellows and oranges are to represent the color of Aspen leaves.

The fabrics are tacked to a Teflon sheet until I am satisfied with the arrangement. Then I will fuse them to batting and quilt the background before adding the tree trunks and whatever else I decide to use.

This is a piece that has been percolating in my brain for a long time. I seemed to have a mental block. I finally had a breakthrough in how I wanted to do the background.

On another note, I need some help from the bird watchers out there. Yesterday, when we were at Reed College, Mia told me that she saw a strange bird and she thought it might be a cross between a duck and a stork. I barely caught a glimpse of it scurrying into the shrubs. He seemed to have long legs and a long beak and a furry roundish body.

Today, I was walking Scooter over there again and there was the bird again. I got these photos with my iPhone. I couldn’t get in close so I cropped these so you can see them better.

He does not have web feet. His beak is quite orange and longer than a normal bird’s beak. We think it might be a blue heron baby because we are right across from Crystal Springs reservoir where they often can be seen.

If anyone has a guess as to its identity, please let me know. I am afraid that he is separated from the nest and wonder if I should try to call someone to rescue him.

For my USA readers, have a happy and safe 4th of July celebration. Our little Portland family will gather for some great food and fun. We will shun the places with crowds of people!!

In a Purple Haze

purplefog

I did it. I finally made it into the studio and took the rotary cutter to some fabric. I looked at the original piece of shibori fabric and suddenly saw a murky forest of trees and vines. I need to do a 12 inch square piece for the SAQA auction and got inspired to cut this up and assemble an abstract landscape.  The piece of fabric was not large enough so I had to add some other fabric for a forest floor and sky. Here is the original fabric. I had not looked at it from the other orientation!

I seem to be getting some focus back. I am generally more tired than I like to be, but it is peak allergy season for me. I managed to do a deep cleaning of the fridge and filled it up with goodies from the local farmer’s market.

I forgot to show you one of my new acquisitions. I am a big fan of Karen Miller’s Katazome work. She cuts the most gorgeous stencils. I saw an oak tree at her show in Philomath, but it was not for sale. She had another which I acquired. I need to decide whether I want to stretch it or hang it loosely. Here it is:

And so my purple haze seems to be lifting or at least transferred.

The Compost Post (not heap)

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

I spent some time today looking into devices for composting kitchen and yard waste for my farm. I spent the afternoon checking out some local sources – most are out or didn’t have what I wanted. So back home to the computer. I ordered this for the backyard:

This turns so that you can continually mix up your compost stuff.

This lovely will reside in the kitchen to collect waste to go down to the composter. It has a carbon filter in the lid to cut down on odors (I hope) I’m hoping that having something this attractive will encourage me to save the garbage and get it into the composter.

This morning I also did some work on my 12 X 12 challenge. I auditioned some fabrics, but I think I need to dye some colors that I am missing. I also finished the Photoshop design that I will use.

Tonight, I discharged one of the pieces from the shibori class. I wrapped it on a pvc pipe and sloshed on some Sunlight Dishwasher detergent. It discharged the outer edge so I washed and dried it and wrapped it the other way. It now looks like this:

The photo is not that great as I took it in the kitchen just now. It looks better than this. Here is a thumbnail of the fabric before I went at it with bleach.

yowzashibori

I got into the dye pot today. You must click on this piece to see it better. It was a piece that I underpainted with dye and wrapped on a pole at the class a couple of weeks ago. I brought it home with me because there was not room in the dye pot. I mixed up a teal dye bath. Here is a detail shot.

I also wrapped the violet folded piece from the class on a long skinny pole. Here is the result. I like it.

I didn’t have pvc pipes of the right size, so I wrapped some small pieces of fabric on wine bottles. these will be underpainted and dyed again.

I also got a great idea for the next 12 X 12 challenge and started working on it. I am so happy with the plan that I have. It has to be done early because I have a lot of conference stuff to take care of between now and the next reveal plus I am leaving for Kansas City on May 22.

Yesterday, I spent an hour working on my garden beds. I got all the old winter plants pulled out plus a ton of weeds. I was excited to find many of my herbs had survived the winter.

I had to make a dessert for a meeting tonight. In spring, my thoughts go to rhubarb. I love it!!

rhubarb

I made these Rhubarb Dream Bars — sort of a shortbread crust with rhubarb in a custardy topping. I had none to bring home. They were devoured in an instant.

Good thing I had extra rhubarb and I made a crisp for Mr C and I.

And here is the broccoli cheese recipe.

It is so easy!! Steve’s mom made it for every holiday/family gathering meal.
Dump into a large bowl and mix:

  • 1 large container of cottage cheese (32 oz.)
  • 6 eggs
  • 8 ounces mild cheddar cut into small cubes (I buy the slices because that is what she did)
  • 6 ounces butter cut in small pieces
  • 6 tablespoons of flour
  • 1 16 once package of frozen broccoli (chopped), thawed

Place the mixture into a buttered 9 X 12 pan. Bake at 350 (convect) 375 (regular oven) for 45 – 60 minutes until set in center and nicely browned on the edges.
There you go!

The Rest of the Shibori

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

One thing I haven’t mentioned is how well and happy I felt during this workshop. I have been working hard and stuck at home, chained to my computer with too little time to be in the studio. This workshop was such a treat for me.

These are the remaining pieces. Remember the ugly candy striped organic cotton? I under painted, over the red and then shibori wrapped it and put it in a bath of dye mixture from left over painting. We didn’t know how it would read. It was green. The chevron design is created by folding the fabric and twisting it on the pole. The organic cotton muslin is very dense so you cannot get the finer shibori lines.

Here is the back side, if you want more subtle.

Here is a detail:

Here is another beautiful shibori piece that was underpainted with a gradation.

underpaintedshibori

This piece was first folded and clamped with jar lids and dyed. Then it was folded in larger folds and clamped with CDs.

jarlidcdclamped

I had four sort of square pieces of fabric. I layered them and folded them and clamped them with blocks of wood that Mr C had cut for me. They were dyed in one of the blacks. These will definitely get more work done to them and perhaps appear in a quilt together.

These last few pieces (above and below) were quickly folded and tied or clamped pieces that would not take up a lot of space. With 16 students, you could not always get a pipe in the dye bucket. In fact, I brought an underpainted piece on pvc home with me. I hope to mix up some dye tomorrow and finish it. This piece was folded with rubber bands around it and dyed in the violet.

Here is a detail – yum.

I have spent the rainy day at the computer, again. I had a pile of registrations to handle. I think I am caught up for a few days.
