Flash Dancing

This is a detail of Green Flash. I finished it today. So, I am flash dancing. Here is the full image.

I felt this piece needed something to give it some focus so I added the little squares of green silk in an undulating pattern which I stitched with matching thread. I love the counter point to the linear pattern of the quilt and the bit of whimsy that this detail adds. It made me happy to to this today.

For those who don’t know why I have titled this Green Flash. There is phenomenon that happens when the sun sets over the ocean and supposedly, just as the sun dips below the horizon, there is a green flash.

I found this photo from Coastranger on Flickr. It illustrates this phenomenon.

I also have finished my chapter for the book. I just have to write a bio and an artist’s statement for each of  my other pieces.

  1. Those green squares are the perfect touch. I was not very excited about the piece in the earlier photos, but wow now!

Well done! It looks like you intended this composition from the get-go.

  3. Vicki W says:

    That’s the perfect final touch!

Have you ever seen the green flash? I have lived near the Pacific for many years and have never seen it.

  5. Connie Akers says:

Congratulations! The squares really do make a nice finish. You can see Green streaks in the sky here in north Texas if you’re heading west at just the right moment.

  6. I never knew about the green flash, and I have watched lots of sunsets. Your quilt captures the idea beautifully.

Yes! Those squares are what it needed! It kinda suggests the arc of the sun as it sets. I’ve seen many green flashes, living on the coast at Sea Ranch, and in Hawai’i. Nothing as overwhelmingly green as that Flickr photo; it’s usually a lot more subtle, like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/genista/16031494/. Or, come to think of it, the one(s) I blogged about seeing a couple of years ago: http://revalani.blogspot.com/2007/06/green-flash.html

Amazing how such a simple thing as those squares made the whole thing work. Kudos for persevering – a woman after my own heart!
