Restrained Frenzy

weddingnecklace

Yes, I am really trying to stay calm in the face of all I have to get done by Tuesday afternoon. I just realized that I had neglected to gather my supplies for Kerr Grabowski’s design workshop. I think I have most of the stuff I need, but she said to bring as many paint chips as we could so I need to make a little trip to take care of that.

I had looked in vain for the right jewelry to wear with my dress to the wedding. Today, we took a trip to downtown Portland as I wanted to look in the Everything Silver shop in Pioneer Square. They didn’t have just what I wanted and we wandered into a funky little shop called, Katmandu, run by a young hippy couple – so adorable were they. I got this necklace, which was made in Afghanistan. Love it. I also got these earrings which were made in Nepal.

The colors in the photos are not quite true, but they look great with my dress.

On Saturday, we went to the AT&T store and upgraded our phones. I now have and iPhone 5, which I love. Mr C had a 4s. We have been having fun with Siri. I got a wild Otter case for mine.

I spent yesterday and this afternoon, designing and printing name badges for the conference. I will get them shipped to San Antonio on Tuesday morning before we leave Portland. I had to have pre and post conference workshop badges, conference badges, vendor badges and day passes. I still have to finish stuffing them into the plastic cases.

This morning, I had my last Sunday School participation. We had an end of the year party and celebrated Trinity Sunday. The kids got to decorate Trinity cookies.

I probably won’t post much over the next week. I am getting so excited to see the family from near and far, my little Paige, all of Lisa’s friends, Clay’s family and then I get to head to San Antonio for a fantastic fiber week. I am so blessed.

I have to end with this bit. The young Moms I work with in Sunday School could not believe my age and wondered my secret. I told them it is sun screen, hair dye and good attitude.

I don’t know if it is the return of the cold weather or what, but I have not felt like doing much today! I did accomplish a few things, anyway.

Remember this quilt that I had so much angst over. It has gotten lots of positive feedback. I took it outside today to get a better photo of it. I am happy that it will probably be purchased by Trinity for permanent installation there. It has been approved by the arts committee – they are paying for it. Just needs to be approved by the higher powers in the church. Here is the original photo.

I also finished the SDA members’ show piece and got that uploaded and did the entry on Cafe. Good to have that behind me.

I tested some de Colourant discharge on some black silk I have. Interestingly, one piece that I had in my stash did not discharge at all, but the piece I dyed a few weeks ago did. Here are the results. I used the gold and the plain. The gold is the little circles. I think I can have some fun with this.

I had a bit of SDA work that took up my morning. Here is today’s drawing. Scooter was sitting in front of me, looking out the window. He didn’t stay there for long so I had to finish it from memory!

I have to sign off – we are watching Skyfall!!

A Productive Day

I had a busy morning getting out reports to all the committee chairs for the SDA conference. I also got quite a bit done in the studio.

I finished painting the edges of the gallery frame for Fiesta and mounted the quilt on it with gel medium – it fit perfectly. My next thing is to add some paint details that echo the hand stitching. I sort of started. I realize that I need a better brush and I need to sit down and be careful.

I also made more small parts for the silk quilt I am designing. I decided to lay the batting on a large table for the layout and fusing. So, I got one of my tables cleared and took care of that. I also did some hand stitching and beading on the 3 x 3 installation.

My drawing for today is not that great; I left it until late in the day, again.

This afternoon, Mr C went to Trinity to help prepare and serve corned beef and cabbage to the low income residents in the neighborhood of the church. He was very proud of his cooking skills. He claims to be an expert at boiling food!!

fiestaframe

After the nasty driving day yesterday, I woke up to a beautiful morning. I took this photo of the sky on Scooter’s early morning walk.

We didn’t go to church because the Shamrock Run was going on in Portland and it is almost impossible to get through town in the morning. So, I headed to the studio to start painting the canvas frame for my SDA member’s show piece. Here is the quiltlet. I think it looks pretty good with the frame up there. I am planning to echo the stitching with paint marks.

I had paint left over in cups so  I painted a piece of cotton. I added some green and scarlet to the mix.

I spent an hour skyping with LM, the SDA website manager, taking care of some registration stuff for the conference. She had set up a new interface for me, making part of my job easier. Love that.

This afternoon, I went to an Oregon SDA meeting at Opulent Fibers, a sweet shop with all sorts of felting materials and supplies. Many of our members are very accomplished felters, making garments that are incredible. A couple of the members have been doing eco-dyeing of felt. I am just going to show you swatches of their work. The red leaves are eucalyptus – isn’t that gorgeous.

This is sculptural felting, with roses!

I am looking forward to a more normal week of working in my studio – I have deadlines!!

This and That

fiestaSDAquilt

Do any of my readers remember this piece. It is a 12 x 12 quilt that I made for one of the challenges. I made two and this one was voted out. I have always loved it. The SDA members show for the conference in June specifies a 12 x 12 quilt mounted on a gallery frame. I think this will be perfect for San Antonio. I named it Fiesta back when I made it. I am going to paint the frame to complement the quilt. The deadline is April 1 along with several other deadlines around the same time. What else is new.

There is not much new to report around here. I have spent the day cleaning house and doing laundry, preparing for a visit from Jane Davila, who is coming to lecture and teach for my guild. Can’t wait to spend a few days with this talented woman.

This week-end, I printed a bunch of name-tags for my guild on Lutradur. This is Portland and I think we should have reusable nametags. Members can write their name on the name tag and turn it in at the end of the meeting to pick up again at the next one.

I have a couple of ho hum drawings.

I am not sure how much blogging I will do in the next few days as I will be busy.
