Art Every Day

joie

I joined the group Art Every Day for a Month. It is something that I have wanted to do anyway -— being in a group makes it more fun and forces me to be more mindful. I just whipped up this post card from some fused silk scraps that I have in abundance. I am going to make several incarnations of this for a special event.

I also did some work on the Rainbow Fish School. The fish were disappearing into the water too much. It needed  some value change to show them off a bit more. I started by stitching with some sparkly thread, but that didn’t work. Tonight, I got out the color pencils and did some highlighting. I think it improves the composition.

I can’t believe a month has gone by, but tomorrow morning I have Columbia Fiberarts Guild board meeting. So off to bed so that I can rise bright and early and spruce up the abode for visitors.

aspentrunkspostcard

I needed to get my studio tidied up because I have 10 artists coming on Saturday for the Oregon Fiber Artist’s critique. We meet twice a year. I know somebody is going to want to see where I work. I went down there this morning and instead of cleaning, I did another expressive drawing and finished one of the post cards. I forgot to get a photo before I stuck it in the mail. It is for someones 50th birthday. I love putting a stamp on them and just sticking them in the PO box. I have never had one get lost.

I finished the Aspen trunk postcard in my free minutes today. I am loving the Colorhue dyes. They are so easy to work with and give instant results. I dyed the back of the tree trunks to give them more definition. Looks so cool.

My expressive drawing today was a variation of the first workshop, using the non-dominant hand, which is the left for me. So we start with a drawn shape using paint and brush.

Then, you stand back and decide what lines to add.

Then you keep adding lines until it seems finished.

It is very freeing, especially using the left hand.

I forgot to show this lovely postcard that Beate included with the things I purchased. It is very beautiful.

By the way, I managed to get my studio in pretty good shape. My office is still unsightly; I will hit that tomorrow.

beatecritters

Look at what arrived in the mail today! These were made by my friend Beate who lives in Dusseldorf, Germany. Her beloved beagle, Jeanie, was hit by a car and had to have surgery on two legs. It cost a lot of money so several of her FB and QA friends pitched in to help her get some quick cash. I bought these adorable critters and the door hanger below, from her Etsy shop.

I was rather tired and achy today. Lugging a trunk show of  quilts to and from the house gave me a nasty back ache. I did get my to do list done in spite of it. I took an Aleve and kept on going. The biggest job was getting all the quilts back in their places.

Tonight, I got some work done on a couple of postcards.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

postcardsstotched

October 15th is Blog Action Day and this year’s theme is Climate Change. I thought I would share how I reuse and recycle materials in my studio.

I don’t throw much of anything away. I hang on to the dogs (the boo boo quilts). I keep scraps of all sizes, especially if they are fused. I love to make small compositions from them to jump start my creative juices. Here is one I did earlier this year.

I have a rather large quilt that was made as a prototype for a liturgical commission. The final piece was made from hand-dyed silk so I used cotton for the prototype. It has been languishing in my studio hoping o be repurposed.

I decided to  make some fiber postcards so I cut some pieces from the quilt and removed the stitching. The crosses were lightly fused and not stitched so they were easy to remove.

I stitched the backgrounds in variegated thread. For one, I used the crosses turned to look like and X. For the other, I used some of my aspen scraps. You can see the resulting postcards at the top. I glue them to watercolor paper preprinted postcards, and they will get a zigzag stitch around the edges.

Here are some other things that I do to reuse, reduce and recycle. I like to buy used silk clothing with interesting prints and colors such as this piece.

I save plastic squeeze bottles and containers to hold paints and dyes. I save bubble wrap and mesh bags to use for printing and texture.

And here is another fun idea. These are dryer sheets that my friend, Kathy, dyed and painted.

These are all fun ideas, but the most important thing is that we get our government to become involved in climate change in a big way. Join me in signing this petition asking the us to act on climate change.

The Party’s Over

Friday, December 26th, 2008

I am a little late catching up on Christmas Day around here. First the gratuitous Wilfredo photo. I think he is waiting for a text message to come in on his I-Phone. Or maybe he is just dressed and ready for the party.

We had a delicious brunch at Steph’s house and enjoyed seeing all the loot the grandkids received from Santa and other relatives.

Back at home, I prepared roasted Cornish game hens, Jacques Pepin braised potatoes, green beans, and a broccoli cheese dish. I love setting the table with the family china. I wanted to fold the napkins into elf shoes ala Brenda. But it was a bit complicated for me (I needed Miles!), so I opted for the elegant candle fold.

That is where the photos of the Christmas dinner ended. I was too busy to pick up my camera. Oh, I did get this photo proving that the party is over, especially for these two.

Today, Lisa and I designed a postcard for my show. I am very late getting this done and she saved my rear. It has been sent off to Overnight Prints and should arrive early next week. At least it won’t go out in the Christmas Rush.

Tonight, Lisa is staying with Amy Ruppel and catching up on artsy things. Tomorrow, we are taking the patient Miss Mia out for her birthday shopping trip — only a week and a half late. I am sure it will be more fun with Aunt Lisa joining us.
