Nostalgia

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

This is an aerial view of the farm in upstate New York where I grew up. A highschool friend sent it to me last year. It was in one of those Christmas photo cards — very retro. Based on how the house looks, I think it was probably taken in the late 50s or early 60s. She found it amongst here fathers things, after he passed away. I scanned it and uploaded it to Photoshop and zoomed in and — whoa— there was my father standing there. Almost in the center of the photo is a gas tank that was used for filling the tractors and truck and the family car. He is standing right there.

I uploaded this because I want to make a quilt of the family homestead. I have done a couple of sketches in my class with Elizabeth Barton. I think it tugged on some buried brain cells. The night after I was looking at the photo and reminiscing, I had a dream and I was walking through the house and I remembered almost every detail of each room.

We had a very successful SAQA meeting today. I think we had about 12 people here and we had some great conversation about entering shows, photography and critiquing. We have decided to meet monthly.

I spent a lot of time, after the meeting, reading my second week lesson for the class and doing some more sketching.

For today’s 3 X 3, I decided that I wanted to do some foiling on red silk. I didn’t have a thermofax screen small enough so I made one. Here is today’s piece.

We got a lot of snow last night, but by this morning, it had turned to slush. And by the time I took Scooter for a walk, after the meeting, this was all that was left in our neighborhood.

Where Was I?

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

My life was rudely interrupted by a nasty stomach bug in the middle of the night on Monday. Lisa’s partner, Clay had it on Christmas eve and passed it on. Nice of her to share!! I was up all night and totally out of it yesterday. I feel as if I am among the living today, but just barely.

We had a lovely Christmas day with a delicious brunch at Steph’s in the morning and dinner here later in the day. Just at sunset, I went on one of my favorite winter walks with Wilfredo and the long legged family. I have to hustle to keep up with them.

I took my Nikon with the new lens to photograph the beautiful light at this time of day.

Back at home, the lights on our Japanese Maple welcomed us.

Hopefully, I will continue to get my strength back and I will be posting some new work in a cleaned up studio.

Heidi Leugers – Zero-Waste Artist

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

Heidi Leugers is an artist who was way ahead of the times. She decided to have a zero waste business in 1998. But perhaps, once you have taken the leap from finance to graduate school in Renaissance portraiture, recycling wool is not so extraordinary!

Heidi moved from the northeast to the northwest around the time that I was president of Columbia Fiberarts Guild. I remember her first visit when she stood and told us about her zero waste work. I did not realize how devoted she was to this ethos until I saw her work on display and she had visuals to show what she does. You can see the felted ball with the opening in the photo above. It is filled with the scraps from that result when she is cutting up the felt to make her designs.

Here is her manifesto:

Here is some more of her work. She recycles hundreds of pounds of post-consumer goods every year. She also works with virgin wool.

Tree garland made from recycled waste.

Heidi’s sheep are breed specific – not sure which one this is.

Yesterday, she was member in the spotlight and then taught a class after the meeting.

You can see more about Heidi on her website. This link will take you to a video that was done about her reclaimed wool work when she lived in the Northeast.      Reclaimed Wool

I hope you enjoyed the photos of Heidi and hearing about one of the pioneers of reclaimed wool art. She plans to open an online shop soon.

The Sunshine Quilt

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

This is a bad photo of Gwen’s quilt. I finished piecing it yesterday. This morning I ran out to Mill Ends and found a couple of fabrics for borders. The inner border is a stripy print with yellow, orange and green and the outer borders are a pin dot orange. I love the sunshiny aura of this quilt. I was too tired to sew the outer borders on tonight. I hope to get that done tomorrow and then I can sandwich it and get it quilted.

Mr C had a meeting in Corvallis today — sort of a job interview with a start up company run by a former employee of his. Looks like he might do some part time consulting for them. He was gone all day and I must admit to being a bit lonely. Of course, Scooter kept me company. I took him for two walks. It was a gorgeous sunny day, a bit brisk, but beautiful none the less.

I took Scooter to the Rhodie Garden. We hadn’t paid a visit for some time. The water was so sparkling from the sun. Here are some photos that I took with my iPhone.

A Gaggle of Geese

This photo is of the triplet trees on the Reed Campus.

Tomorrow night is the opening of our annual December Trinity Arts outreach art show and sale. This year, we are featuring art from Cuba to benefit the Center for Cuban Studies and its art programs for children with Down Syndrome in Cuba. We are having a fiesta with Cuban music and food. My friend Diane and I are going to try out our new virtual terminals for Art Sales. We couldn’t use the Square Up because the funds go in to the church account so the bank set us up with their system that works with iPhones and iPads.

This and That, Again

Monday, November 14th, 2011

So many things going on and thankfully, I am fighting back against a sinus infection. I was down most of the week-end with a horrible sinus headache. I am doing all the none antibiotic things I can, and it is working. Woo hoo. I had a very busy day catching up with stuff.

I went out yesterday and bought the lovely yarn up there. It is a merino wool/bamboo combo that is machine washable. I am making a sweater for the new baby. I wanted to do that green color, but couldn’t find the right yarn so that will have to wait. I love this heathery robin’s egg blue.

My new camera arrived today. When my brand new Nikon 3100 was stolen last spring, I didn’t get a new one because it was quite expensive and I thought I could get along with a cheaper camera for a bit so I bought a used Canon Rebel. I have had so much trouble photographing my quilts. I found a used Nikon 3100 for almost half the price of a new one plus they are buying my Rebel. It turned out to be a good deal. I used it for photos tonight, and I am so happy.

I had a lot of SDA work to do today, but I managed to sew 16 more disappearing nine patch blocks for Gwen’s quilt.

The Oregon art professor who led our critique session a few weeks ago, recommended the book Making Art by Terry Barrett. It is a college text and was quite expensive, so I hope to put it to good use!

I took these two photos with my iPhone on our walk this morning. We still have some great color, but the rain has arrived and so the leaves are falling. Can you see Mr C and Scooter in these photos?
