Got Some Mo’ Back

Monday, May 5th, 2008

I have been so lacking in energy and ideas. I have been avoiding my studio like the plague. The sun has come back to Portland, and with it has come my momentum.

Remember this scarf that I discharged in January?

I decided to add some layers and donate it to the silent auction. First, I screenprinted a subtle filigree design with copper paint.

I painted some foiling glue on bubble wrap and pressed it on the scarf in a cascading design.

I forgot to take a picture of the foiling process. After the glue dries for at least an hour, I lay a sheet of foil over the glue and hit it with a hot iron, transferring the foil. I used a combo of gold and copper foil.

Here is the finished scarf:

Here is a closeup:

Because the glue showed through on the back side as dark spots, I decided to line it with another scarf. It is quite elegant, if I do say so myself.

I am excited to say that two of my collages for the Collage Mania Fiber Art for a Cause sold at the opening bell this morning. I was able to acquire collages by Lizzie Berg, Jette Clover and Karen Stiehl Osborn. So happy with that!! There are still lots of wonderful art to be purchased and the price drops to $40 tomorrow. I still have one left to be purchased. Go here to see them and make a purchase. 100% of the money goes to the American Cancer Society.

Tomorrow, I start the serious business of packing for our journey.

Thursday This and That

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

I realized, today, that I have not reported on my weight loss/gain in two weeks. Last week, I skipped my meeting. And you know how my week was with family visiting, eating out and cooking. So it should be no surprise that I have not lost weight in a couple of weeks. I was about to give it up, but at the meeting yesterday, I struck up a conversation with a woman, about my age, who has lost 80+ pounds. She told me that she often went weeks without losing, but stuck to it and would then see a big drop. Her story inspired me to hang in and keep working at it. I feel as if I am back on track, now. Besides, I seem to be losing inches even thought I am not losing pounds.

Here is a photo of Kyoto Collage II in it’s new home, in Virginia. The owner loves all things Japanese and saw my collages done with Japanese fabric on my website and asked me to make one for her.

Doesn’t it look right at home?

I have finally gotten things back in order on the home front. Maryama came yesterday and the house is neat and tidy. The laundry is done. The bills are paid. Today, I got my studio back in order, ready for my next project.

We have met with two contractors about our bathroom/closet renovation. We have two more to meet with next week. We have no idea how soon the demo and work will start, but we are getting excited. We have the sinks selected. Our next job is to select tile. I am going to try to remember to take my camera when we do the tile search. I am in love with the colors and combinations. It is like being in a candy store.

Tomorrow the rain comes again, after some gloriously sunny days.

Deadlines! Ack!

Monday, March 31st, 2008

I have spent yesterday and today back in the studio. I have had lots of fun and have made a huge mess. It is time to unveil the latest Twelve X Twelve piece. The theme was community. I have really stressed about this, but in the end, I like the piece that I did. It is simple and abstract, but illustrates the theme. It is titled, “Birds of a Feather.”

Here is a detail:

In my research for this, I found several sites on Flickr devoted to birds on a wire. There are thousands of photos. I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to do a landscape or a cityscape. In the end, the ability to abstract a cityscape and use some of my commercial geometrics won.

It was also the deadline for submitting jpegs for Virginia Spiegels Collage Mania to benefit the American Cancer Society. The collages go on sale starting May 5th. Here are the ones I submitted. I don’t know if they will make the cut or not.

I am exhausted. The house is a disaster. We have no clean clothes. There is no food in the house. We have to take our cars in for inspection and renew the registration tomorrow. I need a good night’s sleep so that I can get caught up with my life.

Pink Season In Portland

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Spring arrives tonight, and it is in evidence all over my neighborhood. Spring is pink season in Portland. We even have pink snow. These are clickable to see larger. There are more photos on my Portland Pink Season Flickr set.

I was so inspired by the pink that I made a pink season collage, using some of my vintake kimono fabrics. The background is hand-dyed. I think I will add some beads to this.

I also finished the other collage that I started at the beach. These both need some stitching.

Steph, Jack and M & M are taking a red-eye to North Carolina tonight. Mr C is taking them to the airport. There was no room for me in the car. I will miss having them here for Easter, but I have a good excuse not to buy candy!

I didn’t lose any weight at WW, but that is ok considering my diet over the week-end. Today, I got my hair cut by Kevin at Carpe Diem. I really like the cut. I think I finally found someone who understood what I wanted – a no-nonsense haircut.

I was able to score tickets to see and hear Obama on Friday morning here in Portland and then I remembered that I have crit group at Terry’s. I am a bit disappointed, but it has been really difficult for us to find a time when we can all be there.
