Ta Da!

This thing has taken over my life and is all finished but the facings. It received a very favorable critque from EB. I was very frustrated with the quilting. I thought I might have the patience to do evenly spaced quilting lines, but it quickly became apparent that I am not OCD enough to do that. EB thinks it looks better with my wonky lines, anyway. So I am relieved and happy. Let’s just say, there were a lot of threads to bury! It is 24 X 42 inches.

I thought I would turn this 180° to see how it looks, but I think the top one is better. Now I need a title.

Great news! Lisa and Clay made the drive from Oakland today with two angry cats and Wilfredo, their dog. They had to stop half way and get a second cat carrier. They are settled into a temporary rental while they look for their Portland home. It will be so great having them here. I am a happy Mom.

Piecing Progress

Here is the result of several days of frustration. A few days ago, I finished piecing the skinny lines.

Then, I made the decision to piece it all together and then quilt rather than qulting each piece and then putting it together. You piecers out there probably know that when you take a piece of fabric and start slashing and inserting lines, you get a very wonky thing when you are done. Some of the pieces were way off in shape and size and I had to add some fabric and lines and do some fudging to get them to work. I am working on the bias in some of the pieces, too. So now, it is ready to be quilted into submission. I need to go get some thread, first.

I am also working on the next Printed Fabric Bee piece which is due in a couple of days. The theme is Mola. Here is what I used to make thermofax screens.

Reveal will be in a couple of days.

Wednesday, we were able to pick up our ceramic objects that had been glazed and fired. Love my zombie foot and hand!

I got a bit carried away with the metallic wash on the plate, but all in all, I am happy with my first attempt at something like this. Those are delicious black currant macarons on the plate, a gift from my friend who makes these in many flavors and colors.

And this is the reason that I am moving and feeling like a slug right now. POLLEN!! I have a mean sinus headache and vertigo, my seasonal malady.

Making Progress

I finished this, except for the edges. Turned it in and it got a great review from EB. As is my MO, I was a underwhelmed when I finished it, but it is growing on me.

I did some more work on this piece, but need to quilt the background before I finish the top.

I started working on the water piece for this group.

Lisa is here, looking for a house to buy. She thinks she found one to make an offer on. We are meeting the realtor with her tomorrow at the house. It seems like the perfect place for them. Tonight we had a nice family meal at Stephanie’s.

A Little Postcard Diversion

One of our friends from Trinity, who lives in the South tower of The Westover hosted a cocktail party in our honor on Friday evening. I decided to make a little postcard thank you for her. She loves flowers and has a lot of begonias on her deck.

I had some rainbow dyed silk scraps and first cut little petals for the flower and fused them.

Then I made leaves and a background and fused everything in place.

I hadn’t done free motion quilting for a while so it was fun to do some on this little piece.

I had to make a run to the studio to find my postcard backs. After gluing the stitched piece to the postcard back and zig zag stitching the edge. I put a stamp on it an mailed it. I always like to have the recipients have the surprise of getting this delivered in the mail.

Making the postcard and catching up on my SDA work have filled my day.

Putzing Along

So much good stuff going on here. Enjoying our new place and neighborhood so much.

Last Wednesday was Mia’s graduation from Junior High School. Here she is with the flowers I gave her. We are so proud of her and the confidence and maturity that she has gained over the past year. We are excited to see what she will do in high school. Her gift from us is a trip to Seattle on the train with her Mom and I. Probably won’t get to it until July. After the ceremony, we all went out to a late dinner at Mia’s favorite restaurant. It was great to have time with them before they took off for NC to visit Jack’s parents.

I have been quilting away on the Picasso woman. I was worried about how to quilt the face and body, but decided on straight lines that sort of follow the contours. There have been a lot of thread ends to deal with.

One of our new adventures was to take the street car to the Portland Farmer’s Market on the Portland State campus. Wow, what a fabulous weekly event. It is considered the best farmer’s market in the country, I was told. I think we will make this a weekly event, when we are here and able.

I hope to finish Picasso woman in the nest couple of days and get started on a larger version of Sky Blue Pink.
