Still Cooking, But There’s More

yowzashibori

I got into the dye pot today. You must click on this piece to see it better. It was a piece that I underpainted with dye and wrapped on a pole at the class a couple of weeks ago. I brought it home with me because there was not room in the dye pot. I mixed up a teal dye bath. Here is a detail shot.

I also wrapped the violet folded piece from the class on a long skinny pole. Here is the result. I like it.

I didn’t have pvc pipes of the right size, so I wrapped some small pieces of fabric on wine bottles. these will be underpainted and dyed again.

I also got a great idea for the next 12 X 12 challenge and started working on it. I am so happy with the plan that I have. It has to be done early because I have a lot of conference stuff to take care of between now and the next reveal plus I am leaving for Kansas City on May 22.

Yesterday, I spent an hour working on my garden beds. I got all the old winter plants pulled out plus a ton of weeds. I was excited to find many of my herbs had survived the winter.

I had to make a dessert for a meeting tonight. In spring, my thoughts go to rhubarb. I love it!!

rhubarb

I made these Rhubarb Dream Bars — sort of a shortbread crust with rhubarb in a custardy topping. I had none to bring home. They were devoured in an instant.

Good thing I had extra rhubarb and I made a crisp for Mr C and I.

And here is the broccoli cheese recipe.

It is so easy!! Steve’s mom made it for every holiday/family gathering meal.
Dump into a large bowl and mix:

  • 1 large container of cottage cheese (32 oz.)
  • 6 eggs
  • 8 ounces mild cheddar cut into small cubes (I buy the slices because that is what she did)
  • 6 ounces butter cut in small pieces
  • 6 tablespoons of flour
  • 1 16 once package of frozen broccoli (chopped), thawed

Place the mixture into a buttered 9 X 12 pan. Bake at 350 (convect) 375 (regular oven) for 45 – 60 minutes until set in center and nicely browned on the edges.
There you go!

On the Menu, Today…

And we continue with the cooking and eating!! Hope you had a great day, too.

Our weather was quite rainy, so an indoor egg hunt was in order. Lisa and Clay bought all the goodies and hid them.

Mr C went berserk over his Easter basket. Maybe it was all the ham slicing he did at Trinity this morning, preparing for the outreach dinner.

Lisa and Clay were leaving this afternoon to fly back to SF, so we didn’t have our usual Easter dinner feast. Instead, I prepared a brunch.

A cheese/broccoli/egg casserole — a family favorite:

A fabulous Paula Dean French Toast Casserole:

And sausage and bacon:

Steph made a beautiful plate of fruit and I mixed up another batch of Blissinis:

For dessert, a delectable assortment of Moonstruck truffles and chicks:

I think I am done cooking and entertaining for now. I am looking forward to working in the garden and the studio this week.

I have been cooking again. Tonight, I entertained the family and Lisa’s Portland friends were our special guests. Clay is a vegetarian so I made a middle eastern meal, heavy on veggies with some lamb kefta kabobs for the meat eaters.

Here are the dinner guests: Amy Ruppel, Pablo,  Trish Grantham, Lisa, Mia and Clay. Pablo is Trish’s adorable chihuahua.

There is Clay, again, and Steph and Jack. They are all waiting patiently for Mr C and I to put the finishing touches on our feast.

Here they are roasted – yumm!

Couscous with spinach and feta (Clay and Lisa helped to make this.)

Here are the lamb Kefta Kabobs before grilling. I forgot to take a photo after, but they were great in pitas with a minted yogurt sauce. Steph made a delicious salad with so many good things, like roasted corn and almonds and goat cheese.

We had ice cream and Easter cookies for dessert. I’m tired. G’Night.

Birthday Lunch

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

stashlunchgroupToday, I made lunch for the STASH group for Terry’s and Linda’s birthdays. This morning I made a time line for the preparations. I felt quite organized and on top of things. I needed to run to the store to buy some cheese for the top of the quiche. I couldn’t find Vacherin yesterday and decided to google a substitute. My plan was to put the quiche in the oven to bake. This was to take an hour and the cheese went on top at the end. I was rushing off to get dressed when I was hit with a massive nose bleed. They have been getting better, but once in a while, I get blind sided. It wouldn’t stop. Mr C to the rescue. He found the cheese at Trader Joe’s and I relaxed and and waited for the nose bleed to stop.

I had plenty of time to finish all the details. Here are the champagne flutes with fresh mint waiting for the Blissini — equal parts pomegranate juice, orange juice and Prosecco.

Here is the scrumptious quiche – with wonderful crust from scratch. I like this quiche because it was heavy on the veggies with less eggy stuff.

I also made molten lava cakes for dessert. Here they are before I baked them.

lavacakesprebaking

I made a salad with blood oranges and almonds which I plated with the quiche.

And the decadant dessert — molten chocolate lava cakes with strawberry ice cream and fresh strawberried. It was sooo good.

That was my art for the day. I am feeling liberated. House is clean. I am caught up with registration work and Lisa and Clay are coming tomorrow. I don’t even care that the rain is coming back.

Hey!!

stuffedmaggie

I have not been chilling like Maggie. I have been diligently working on SDA stuff and cleaning my studio. Cleaning my studio was like an archeological dig. I have not done a good cleaning since I finished the quilts for my show and then I have done quite few things since then. I had layers of fabric and paints and pencils and stamps and other interesting things. Every thing is now in its place and it is so serene and inviting in my creative space. I can’t wait to get back to work. Yesterday morning, I attended a Columbia FiberArts Guild board meeting.

I finally hung some art in my office space. It makes me happy to see the work of so many friends and my daughter on the walls.

On left is a piece I bought off the design wall from Liz Berg at Empty Spools at Asilomar. On the right is a piece I got back from a Bag of Stuff challenge.

etchings

These are from a print class I took in North Carolina. Top left is a monoprint, the other two are etchings.

outsiderart

Outsider art. The one on the right is a drawing on lined yellow paper from my SIL and BIL in Florida.

manahan

The piece on the left was a gift from Mary Manahan who was a blogging friend back when I started. She no longer blogs, but checks in once in awhile – I miss her. The other piece is by the very talented Rhonda Blasingame. I got this piece in a Quilt Swap. Wasn’t I lucky.

keepcalm

And, my mantra for every day: Keep Calm and Carry On.

Today, I had a dentist appointment for drill and fill. I had a couple of 20 year old fillings in two of my front teeth that were leaking. I was not a happy camper this morning, as I was dreading the ordeal, but it really was not that bad. It is nice to have the metal fillings changed to the new white amalgam.

I have a busy few days coming up. Tomorrow, I am having a birthday lunch for Terry and Linda with the STASH group. I must get up early and cook some good things. On Thursday, Lisa and Clay (her SO) are coming to visit for a few days.
