Making Progress

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

I finished Klee’s Castles and I just need to add a label and a sleeve and send it off for the SAQA auction. I had a lot of fun adding the details to this. Here is a detail shot.

I finally got the latest fabric frenzy cleaned up and stored. I have a bag of large fused silk scraps and a bag of smaller pieces.

I can’t bear to throw out the smallest of scraps. They are great for making small works like fabric postcards. I am happy that the studio is neatened and I can start my cityscape this week-end.

We have had some half way decent weather today. It was chilly but mostly sunny and no rain. It is amazing what some sunshine can do to lift your spirits.

Tomorrow, Terry Grant and I are going to the Clark County Quilter’s show in Vancouver, WA. We will be selling and signing the Twelve by Twelve book and showing the colorplay quilts that we have revealed on the blog, so far. I am looking forward to the meet and greet and to see some quilts and maybe spend some money at some of the vendors.

Emotional Roller Coaster

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

I started the day in a sour mood. I planned to go to my studio and purge it of the piles of fabric and stuff from my last two projects. But, I got distracted. I worked some more on the Klee Castles. I  putzed around with one of the two chartreuse pieces. It needed something else. I did a Constant Contact newsletter for one of the SDA reps.  I moped and got teary eyed.

I am so tired of my clothes, cooking and shopping the same old food, the lousy weather.  My sinuses are blooming because I am in that vortex of winter molds and spring pollen. Mr C is coping by immersing himself in designing our new deck. If I didn’t have my art, I would really be a nut case!!

Today, I got an e-mail that Prairie Fields was accepted into PAQA South ArtquiltsMovement. I wrote an artist statement about zooming across the heartland in a plane and taking a photo that inspired this piece. I thought it was a stretch, but Yay!, I got in.

That turned my day around. I posted it on Facebook and received lots of affirmations from my friends. Tonight, I was finishing work on Klee’s Castles and felt really happy. I love this fabric that I put on the back.

I think I will donate this piece to the SAQA auction.

The first photo up there are some photo-shopped photos for the next piece I want to do which will be the Portland skyline with a sunset sky. It is a view that we often see from our side of the river. Under the sketches is part of the mess that I still need to clean up.

My Reality

Monday, April 4th, 2011

First, I am in danger of adding too much to this piece. But, I am having so much fun. It is almost finished.

Secondly, the bridge piece is history. It is never to be seen. I painted the bridges black and took a photo and ugh! The composition is really off. I can use some of the background for small pieces like postcards so it won’t be a total waste. But, I had to admit that it was futile to spend more time on it. Whew! I love facing reality sometimes.

I had a great week-end. I made a delicious meal for the family — chicken tagine with apricots and almonds, couscous, Caesar salad and a delicious Bumble Berry Pie. I used berries from the freezer — raspberries and Marion berries. The chicken was coated with a mixture of cinnamon, ginger and turmeric and it was so beautiful and tasty.

M and M came early so that Steph and Jack could reorganize and clean his office. We watched “Tangled” – so much fun. When they arrived, Mia warned me that she might smell like rabbit.

This is Stewie, the classroom rabbit, which she took care of for the week-end. I stole the photo from Steph’s flickr, hope she doesn’t mind!

Channeling Klee

Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

I have started stitching on the Klee castles. First, I machine stitched with black thread to hold some of the elements in place. In looking at Klee’s body of work, he used a lot of black marks, many of them very whimsical and almost childlike.

Yesterday, when I had lunch with Steph, she suggested that it might be a fun way to stitch this piece. I a enjoying the sitting and stitching.

I made french knots and fancy stitching around the circles. It adds a touch of whimsy that I am enjoying.

Tomorrow, the family is coming for dinner. We are bribing Jack with a nice meal so that we can get some advice from him about building our new deck and outdoor cooking space.

Now, I am going back to stitching and watching a movie!!
