Good (make that) Great Mail Day

Monday, November 26th, 2007

When we arrived home from the beach, I found a card from the PO, saying that I had a package to pick up. I couldn’t wait until this morning to drive over to retrieve it. This was inside:

villageseries2.jpg

It is Village Series #2, made by one of my favorite art quilters, Kristin La Flamme. She started it last year at Art Quilt Tahoe, in a class with Gerry Chase. I kept dropping by the room and calling it my quilt. I really loved the mix of fabrics and the variety of surface design techniques. It is whimsical with a gracious nod to traditional quilting. Yet, it is very abstract and almost ethereal. What can I say, I love it. So I did a payment plan and now, it is all mine!!

Here are a couple of closeups:

I have to do some rearranging of art on our walls so that this will have a place of honor. I’ll post a picture in its new location.

Now, after several days away from my Janome, I must finish quilting the “Good to be Green” piece before the end of the week.

A Wacky Wednesday

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Thank you to every one who checked in and made such lovely comments about my dandelions. I so appreciate hearing from you.

Happy Halloween. Warning!!!! Cute grandchildren photos are coming. Mia as Pippy Longstockings and Milo as a Ghost of Halloween Past (he wanted to wear his costume from 2 years ago!)

I love the hair. I wanted to borrow the spray hair paint!!

Mia designed this Jack-o-cat and her Mom carved it.

You can see more silly Halloween photos on my Flickr.

We do not get any trick or treaters on our street, but a few streets away there is lots of action — steaming cauldrons with witches, screaming ghouls, bats and pumpkins galore. This is a neighborhood that loves Halloween.

Yesterday, I received a belated birthday present from my good friend, Judy, in Georgia. We have so much in common that it is sort of spooky. We are not sure how we found each other, but I think she stumbled on Lisa’s blog and bought one of the Mod birds which she was making and selling at the time. Back then, my girls had links to my blog so a lot of people who read their blogs would come and visit me. I must have embarrassed them at some point because they stopped linking to me!! So, anyway, I think Judy found me that way. We are hoping to take a class together this summer up at Coupeville Art Center. I hope it works out. Judy’s sense of humor is just as wacky as mine – maybe even more so.

This is what she made for me this year. It has an aluminum base which is cut out and covered with fabric embellishments. We have our dogs with us. We are wearing our silly hats and our endless/end this war tee shirts. I love that she has given me the body that I aspire to have. So I will treasure this. Thank you, Judy!!

She also gave me one of her gorgeous cards made from her silk sorbet fabric.

Speaking of svelte bodies, today was weigh-in day. I was down, but then, I was up two weeks ago. I am really stuck at this weight, but I definitely am losing inches so I am not going to stress. I am doing up to 70 minutes of aerobic walking a day.

Birthday Blessings

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

Yesterday was a lovely day. Not perfect, weather-wise, but a nice day to head out to the Hood River Fruit Loop for some apple and pear picking.

Before we left, the UPS guy brought me a package from one of my fave blogger friends, Dee. it contained not one, but two birthday cards, one silly and one sublime. She made me this beautiful table topper which she calls Very Gerrie Lime! Look how gorgeous it looks with my lime green bowl filled with fall gourds.

I love that leaf fabric.

Thank you, Dee!!

Then, Steph and M & M picked me up and we headed out to Hood River, the fruit mecca of Oregon. At the STASH meeting, Beth gave me a coupon for free apples and pears at the Mt. View Orchard so we had a destination and a purpose.
Here are M & M in the van on the way.

The scenery was beautiful.

Here are some pics from the orchard – all clickable to see larger.

During our lunch, this brown lab took a liking to Steph.

I bought one of these big sunflowers to hang on my fence for the birds.

Here are some of the Red Delicious Apples and Red D’Anjou Pears that I got for free. We picked 44 pounds of apples and pears which only cost us 25 cents a pound – what a bargain!

Last night Mr C took me to one of my fave restaurants, Caprials. I had grilled Romaine salad, grilled tuna on a butternut squash cakes and pound cake with pears — all yummy. I had to use some of my extra WW points, but it was worth it.

Today, I have been getting ready for my class with Wendy Huhn. I had to get some laser color prints made. I hope to have some fun images to share as I go through the next few days. I also am still uploading cds to my IPod. I got a thing for playing the Nano in my car. I love having all my music at my finger tips. Now, I have to figure out how to get it to work with our stereo system. I will have to go to Radio Shack and get a cable then I will be in business.

Happy Christmas and Other Good Stuff

Yesterday, while I was at the Japanese Garden, the mail arrived. Mr C didn’t hear the mail carrier and so a slip of paper was left saying a package could not be delivered and could be picked up today at the post office. After a quick trip back to the Japanese Garden to take care of a couple of things, Mr C and I stopped to pick up the mysterious package which had come through customs.

I digress. I just want to say that the show at the Japanese Garden looks wonderful and the pavilion was full of folks when we got there. And a sale was in progress.

Back to the package. When I saw who it was from, I got really excited. Once home, I opened the package and found this lovely box.

Inside, wrapped in tissue was the soft sculpture creche set that Kristin made for me. I set them up on the mantle right away. I wanted to get out my whole collection so that they could meet each other and have an early Christmas party — even if it was almost 90° today.

Each piece is so exquisite, with wonderful fabrics and embroidered features. Here they all are; you can click on them to see them larger.

Now, I have to finish an Aspen quilt for her. I hope I can make something as lovely as this.

Oh! And there was fabric, too! I am so in love with the hand-dyed cheese cloth — I can hardly stand it!!

This afternoon I got back to work on the Journal Quilt. I am feeling less stressed and enjoying the process of putting this together, which is as it should be!!

I wasn’t happy with the other screen that I made and so I selected a different photo of the Seattle Library grids and fiddled with it in Photoshop.

Here are a couple of prints that I made using brass paint. The top is on a hand-dyed cotton and the bottom is on gold metal mesh. This photo is a little blurry, but you can see that it is a much better print.

I don’t know which will work in the jq.

Tomorrow is Columbia Stitchery Guild meeting. Larkin Van Horn is our guest speaker. I can’t wait to meet her.

Frantic Friday

Friday, September 7th, 2007

I am a bit frantic because I can’t get back in the groove in the studio. I have to get my journal quilt done and I am getting frantic. I had to drive home yesterday because Mr C’s knee is really bothering him. I also am doing all the dog walking. I volunteered to work on the youth website for Trinity and I needed to send the pages this morning. I am having a problem with my big Epson printer. I need to print a photo on cotton for the journal quilt and the printer is not cooperating. I did get screens made for the journal quilt. I also printed a photo on organza. More on that in my next post. I will get it done!!!!

Yesterday, when we arrived home, I found something wonderful in the mail. A couple of weeks ago, Christine, who comments on my blog quite often, made a request on the Quilt Art list. She needed a black bead for the eye of a crow on her journal quilt. I e-mailed her and said that I would send her an assortment of black beads to chose from.

I received such a nice gift in return. It really seems out of proportion, it is so cool. With the help of Terry, she looked at some photos of me and made these two pieced blocks — the young Gerrie and the current Gerrie. Actually, the current Gerrie is a little more svelte than I now am, but I hope to look like that soon. Mr C was so amused at the lime green shoes.

I must put these in to a little art quilt that I can hang in my office. Thank you so much, Christine!!

I took this photo of Ruby the dog at the Willows Lodge. She is an adorable laid back dog. Notice the sign next to her bed which is sort of a throne.

I am hoping for a better day tomorrow. Right now I am going to do some searching on line for Epson support.
