Science Themed Printed Fabric Bee

October’s theme, chosen by Jackie Lams, was science. I was a bit baffled about what to do. All I could think of was the atomic symbol. So, I did a search on science clip art and came up with DNA strands.

I drew them with india ink pens and made thermofax screens, but the screens burned too much and the screens started disintegrating. So, back home to regroup. This time I took the drawn screens and made photocopies on my old Canon copier and got much better screens.

I played around with different colors and background fabric and ended up using chartreuse for the background. Here is the 12 x12 piece for Jackie.

And here is the 6 inch piece for the give away.

After doing the dna strand printing, I thought the piece needed something more so I used one of my little stencils and added the red squares.

Here I Am!!

It has been a week since our critique group met. I have been busy, busy. Here is Taking Leaf of My Senses redux. I like it so much more. I need to take some yellow paint to the fall leaves as they are not showing up as well as I would like.

Here is Flight Through Sky Blue Pink redux. I lopped off the top so that the pink cheesecloth area is not in the middle. I think it works much better. You can click on either image to see them larger.

I met with the church ladies in Albany on Monday. I thought I was a go to get the commission and then I got an e-mail from them saying that the church requires to submissions so they were meeting with a second artist this week. Then they will take both proposals to the board next month to make the final decision.

I received my copy of Women Who Come to the Table this week. It is a book about the Dinner at Eight exhibits that Jamie Fingal and Leslie Jenison have curated for several years. It is a nice book of images of all the quilts and photos of the dinners that have taken place in Houston.

I was honored to have my Hugs and Kisses quilt introduce the section about the An Exquisite Moment exhibit, last year.

I have been in 3 of the exhibits. I never got anything done for this year since I was busy moving.

I have been working on printing fabric for this month’s theme for The Printed Fabric Bee. The theme is science. Here is a sneak peak:

We just got home from a wonderful concert by The Oregon Symphony. Time to call it a day.

Busy, Having Fun and a Year Older

On Thursday, Lisa and Clay arrived from San Francisco while I was having fun with my STASH group – it is the first time that all six of us have been together in so long. In the afternoon, the girls and I headed down to Pioneer Square where Design Week Portland had set up a display and geodesic domes. In one of the domes, she was interviewed by Namita Wiggers, former Director and Chief Curator for the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, and now freelance curator and writer. Coincidentally, Namita will be the keynote speaker for the SAQA conference in Portland next year. I always enjoy hearing Lisa talk about her path to success as an artist. Two people brought their college students to her talk — pretty cool.

On Friday, I got my new teeth “installed.” They look really good! After that, I picked up Steph and Mia and we went to another event where Lisa was the featured speaker. She talked about her evolution as a sketchbook user and how important it is to her work, now. She had her two latest books there for sale and after the talk, she signed books. When I left there was a huge line and she sold out of all her books. I think there were over 200 people there for the event.

On Saturday, I got to go shopping with Mr C and pick out some birthday presents for myself. We all went out to dinner on Saturday night because the girls were leaving on Sunday, my actual birthday. We has a wonderful meal at a restaurant in our new neighborhood. This is me ogling my birthday cheesecake.

On Sunday, after church, we went out to brunch with a group of friends who had gone on the trip to Israel with us. One couple was visiting from Iowa. So I feel as if I had a wonderful 4 days of fun and good food and great company.

I managed to get a little studio work done. I painted some organza for leaves for the quilt I am trying to rehabilitate.

I then fused pieces of organza together to give more depth and character to the fabric.

I need to find time to cut and stitch the leaves and finish redoing the quilt before my crit group next Saturday. But, first, I have to finish the guild newsletter!

Urban Surfaces – The Printed Fabric Bee

This is a detail shot of the printing I did for The Printed Fabric Bee. Leslie Jenison chose urban surfaces as her theme. In my last post, I told you that I started with a cotton scarf on which the dye job was pretty sad.

I painted it with diluted DynaFlow paint to dirty it up and gray the colors.

Then, I went at it with construction fence under a silkscreen and black paint.

I went home and let it dry over night. The next day, I used a white beeswax crayon and a rubbing plate to make marks on the piece.

Next, I went at it with a syringe and lime green paint to make graffiti like marks. I was quite worried when I left it because the paint was a lot puffier than I had planned, but when I came back the next day, it was dry and flat.

Leslie asked for a 6″ x 18″ piece. I had enough for two. So, it was easy to get a nice 6″ piece for the giveaway.

Fabric Printing Day Two

Whew, I am exhausted from my week of hosting Rayna and the two days of workshop. I totally crashed last night – I might as well have been in a coma. I took Rayna to the airport this morning and then we went to the farmer’s market. I spent the afternoon dozing and working on SDA membership stuff.

I came away from the workshop with a few pretty good pieces. The piece up at the top was transformed from this. It was first printed with newspaper resist on a screen. Then I added yellow orange circles and some black marks made with a mesh type of ribbon. Finally, I used a syringe to add the squiggly lines.

This was another silk scarf that had some very pale marks when I used an anemic black dye for printing. I used the newspaper resist screen and olive green ink followed by purple lines using one of my favorite Stencil Girl stencils.

This piece was started with newspaper resist and then I used the school glue screen with mix of orange and yellow. The screen was starting to break down and I love how it turned out.

This next piece started as a piece of muslin that I was using for test prints.

I kept printing on it and then painted the whole thing with Dynaflow chartreuse paint.

The next piece was something I had in my stash. You can see the bottom section. I am not sure what I did to get those circles and marks. I printed over it with the glue resist screen of circles using purple paint. Not excited about it, but who knows what use I might find for it.

Lastly, here is my printing surface after a lot of printing. I always love how the printing surface is so spontaneous looking.

All in all, it was a great week. I am not looking forward to Monday. I am having 4 hours of dental work as they remove the disintegrating bridge from my upper right side. I will get a temporary put in and hope I don’t have to wait to long for the final fix.
