Some Work and Some Play

Monday, June 7th, 2010

I spent the morning learning the Constant Contact e-mail system and how to import a mailing list for my SDA job. Not that difficult. Got an e-mail formatted and sent. I only had a couple of errors. I will do better next time.

I continued the reorganizing, sorting and cleaning of my studio. It is slow going because I keep getting distracted by things that I find. I also took photos of 3 small pieces and burned a CD to enter the Small Works show at the Main Street Gallery in Groton, NY. Got it mailed and only had to pay first class postage. Woo hoo! It would be neat if I could get a piece in that show because it will be happening when I am in NY this summer. Hope springs eternal.

Tonight, I spent some play time in the studio. I decided to do a monoprint on fabric for my fiber sketch today. I wondered if I could do an Aspen landscape. I painted on glass first.

I placed a piece of dupioni silk on the plate and brayered it.

I had  a couple of messes and finally got one worthy of the Sketchbook.

That first photo is the painted organza from yesterday. I wondered what would happen if I pleated it. I like the color play that happens with the layers.

Joy

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Yesterday, I had to take a day off because I was still feeling like a truck drove over me. It was our first sunny day since I can’t remember. Scooter was not feeling so well either. Maybe he was having sympathy pains.

Today, we are both back in action! My fiber sketch for today is called joy and represents how I felt after a couple of days of a nasty virus.

I had to pick up some new gallery canvases at the art store today. I also bought some Dynaflow paint in the colors of the next Twelve by Twelve challenge — purple and yellow.

I am planning to paint some silk organza for the challenge. I just had to give it a whirl tonight.

Gaaa! I love it. I love the color you get when the purple and yellow are mixed.

Here is the cotton that I had under the organza.

M & M and their parents took off on Friday after school and got in two nights and a day of camping before the rain came pouring down this morning. I loved the photos that she shared on the 3191 blog, but especially this one.

Tomorrow, I am going to try to get my studio cleaned up. I might have company at the end of the week.

Sunshine

Friday, June 4th, 2010

If you don’t have sunshine, make some! I have a nasty virus — feeling woozy, achy and just plain sick. At 4 pm today, I took a hot shower and thinking I felt better, I went down to the studio to do my fabric sketch. The sun was just starting to peek through the clouds and became my word for the day.

I did a quick free motion quilted sun with some silk fabrics. I felt so whoozy, I just left my loose threads. I kind of like that. And, I never said that each of these sketches would be masterpieces. This one certainly is not.

Tomorrow promises to be a delightful day with temps in the 70s and mostly sunny. I hope so and hope I feel well enough to enjoy it.

Energy

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

I awoke to a bit of sunshine today. It energized me. It was not a lot of sun, but at least it didn’t rain until I was walking Scooter this afternoon at 4 pm. It is raining rather steadily now and will for the foreseeable future. Saturday is looking like it might be a respite.

My lettuce is growing like crazy. It loves this weather. My favorite way to have it is with fresh lemon juice, olive oil and a bit of goat cheese. Yummy!

I managed to get a little more organizing done in the studio. I think if I had a few days of warm, sunny days, I would get it done.

I am also working on a small piece for a juried show that is due in a week. I wanted to try to do something for the SAQA  “No Place to Call Home” show. I have a couple of ideas. The due date is June 20th. I would be pushing it to get something done, I think. However, the size requirements seem doable.

OK, the morning’s energy has dissipated. Time for bed.

RAIN…

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

I am taking part in The Sketchbook Project. Each participant selects a color and a theme. I chose red and “This is not a sketchbook”, for the theme. You can read more about it here. Mine arrived in the mail yesterday.

The sketchbooks are sent back to the Brooklyn Library of Art in January and will then go on tour.

Every day, (or most days!), I will come up with a word, idea or inspiration for the day and create a fiber sketch to interpret it.

Have I complained about living in a rain forest lately? It was pouring rain again today. We finally saw a bit of sunlight this evening around 6 pm. Sooooo, today’s word is rain.

I am leaving space at the bottom of the page to document the date and the theme for the day.

I hope I can keep up with this. It would probably be easier to actually sketch since I can take it with me.

A couple of weeks ago, I was playing with making prints using actual leaves. I learned this technique from the Carol Duval show on HGTV, years ago. I paint the backs of leaves, using a foam brush. Then, you carefully place it on fabric. Next, take some folded tissue paper (4 layers) and larger than the leaf and place it over the leaf and pat, pat, pat. The tissue paper picks up the stray paint and you get a nice impression of the leaf.

This afternoon, I had to get out of the house so I went out in the yard and took some photos of wet plants.
