Digital Essentials

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

When this book arrived in the mail, Mr C said  — “Gee, computers and quilts — this is the perfect book for you!!” It is a book for which I have waited for what seems like a long long time! The author, Gloria Hansen, along with her London based partner, Derry, are the designers of my website. They are known as Gloderworks. Gloria is a one woman wickipedia of information about digital images, photo and graphics software, printing on fabric and creating award winning quilts using all of these techniques.

I got to know Gloria on the Quilt Art list. In addition to being a very knowledgeable resource, she has always been more than generous about sharing her knowledge with all of us. I am the kind of person that buys software and then flies by the seat of pants, trying this and that and picking up bits of wisdom and know how when and where I can. Now, I will feel as if I have Gloria right here in my office.

Digital Essentials will be a very handy resource, residing next to my computer. Gloria covers every thing from the tiny pixel to the big picture and everything in between. For those who are saving money by doing their own photography and submitting digital images for juried quilts shows, this book is a must. From calibrating the color management on your computer to removing the background from a quilt, it is all in this handy manual. She covers a variety of software and PC and Mac environments. Want to know how to print better images on fabric? It’s in there.

You can get an autographed copy of the book on Gloria’s website. The web page also has a nice synopsis of all the information that you will find in the book plus a free pdf of the chapter on image protection.

The Birthday Fun, cont.

Monday, October 6th, 2008

On Sunday morning, we awoke to some clearing of the skies and this was the view from our bedroom window — Mt. Hood. It only lasted about 10 minutes. The elusive mountain disappeared under a cloud, once again.

Stephanie made Dutch babies for breakfast and we enjoyed celebratory mimosas. She used some of the apples picked on Saturday.

M & M enjoyed a celebratory sparkling apple juice.

Mr C and I took a hike along the nearby irrigation canal. I found some beautiful leaves showing their fall colors.

After lunch we drove up the Columbia river past The Dalles and crossed over into Washington and went to the very eclectic and wonderful Maryhill Museum of Art. It is hard to describe this place. It has something for everyone!! We saw a really cool exhibit of Andy Warhol work. There was also an invitational show of outdoor sculpture, which we really enjoyed along with the resident peacock.

The permanent collections were a treasure trove. There was a very informative and visually pleasing display of Native American artifacts.

Mia brought here journal and took lots of notes.

We were enthralled by the display of chess sets from all over the world.

The best exhibit, and the main reason I had wanted to take Mia, was of the Theatre de la mode:

The fashions of post-World War II France are highlighted in this 1946 exhibit, which shows one-third human size mannequins wearing fashions created by the country’s finest designers. After their premiere in Paris they toured Europe then America. The last stop of the original 1946 international tour of Théâtre de la Mode was San Francisco where the mannequins remained until the early 1950s. At that time they were acquired by Maryhill Museum of Art. They went on a second world tour in the 1990s visiting Paris, New York, Baltimore, Portland and Tokyo.

These were really fabulous. The fabrics, the style, the attention to detail. We were enthralled.

You can see all the great stuff that we enjoyed and more fun photos of our family gathering on my Flickr. It was a wonderful time for me. I enjoyed the attention from my children. They put together a fun slide show — a sort of This is Your Life montage. I cried.

Lisa set up her camera on the deck and set the timer and we were able to get a family photo. Here is one of the outakes (we couldn’t get Miles to stop making faces!!) Be sure to click to see the Miles face.

The final portrait:

We came home today. Mark and Jayme left last night. Lisa flew home tonight. Now, it is back to work, but I still plan to do some celebrating because my birthday isn’t until next Sunday!!

The Obama Quilt

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

I am interrupting my birthday celebration to share this with you. I am part of the group known as Fiber Artists for Obama. Some of us made a 12 inch block. These were pieced by someone in So Cal and then it was sent to Maria in Alaska. She added that gorgeous border and quilted it. She just sent me these photos. It is being professionally photographed as we hope to enter it in some shows.

Here is a detail with my block – the Andy Warhol block.

The sun has come out and we can see Mt. Hood. Later!!

My Birthday Week-end Part 1

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Just a quick check in. We are having rain and rainbows. I love rainbows so that is perfect. Here is the house where we are staying. It is very modern and has lots of room and 4.5 bathrooms.

We got the puzzle going today.

This afternoon we went apple picking.

My batteries went dead so I didn’t get any more photos at the orchard.

Tonight, all 3 of my children prepared a delicious dinner for me — salad, a wonderful rice and veggie dish, roast chicken, roasted vegetables and a delicious apple tart with ice cream and caramel sauce. I should have taken a photo. Here is Miles enjoying every bite.

Lisa gifted me with this amazing painting from a photo of me when I was about 15. Isn’t it wonderful?

If you would like to see more photos, please check my Flickr Set: My 70th Birthday.

Here is one of the rainbows.

This and That and Queen for the Week-end

Want to see something scary?

Meet Kirstin, Mia’s American Girl Doll. Steph found her at a yard sale a couple of years ago and she has been loved almost to death!! She recently suffered a serious accident and lost an arm. So today, I boxed her up and sent her to Chicago to the American Girl Doll Hospital. She will return with her arm reattached, wearing a hospital gown and bracelet with a get well balloon. It should take about 2 weeks. This is what Grandmas do!!

We were blessed with some nice warm days for the past week and today it is raining. My urban garden is thriving. I think I will be harvesting some lettuce, soon.

October 12th is my 70th birthday, but, this week-end, I am being whisked away to a luxury mountain house near Mt. Hood so that I get to spend a long week-end with my core family. This was my greatest wish for my birthday. We will hike, play games, eat, drink and be merry. Oh, yes, Miles told me he is bringing a jigsaw puzzle. We love to do puzzles. I do not have to do any cooking!

There is wifi so perhaps I will share some of the frivolity with you. Lisa arrives in the morning, without Wilfredo. It was too expensive to include him. Mark and Jayme are arriving tomorrow night. Needless to say, I am excited!!
