Happy Days

paige4-11-13

We made it to San Francisco on Thursday afternoon. We had beautiful weather for driving. We stopped in downtown San Francisco so that I could run through some stores to see if there was anything I might feel like wearing to Lisa’s Wedding. We received our invitation before leaving town.

It was a very discouraging venture. I found only one thing that I felt like trying on. It was too big. I could find nothing that would fit me that I liked.

Fortunately, our next stop was at Paige’s home where we found that smiley face up there. What a delight she is. She is on the verge of walking and is learning new words every day.

On Friday, we got to spend most of the day with her. Here she is chowing down on yogurt at breakfast with us.

Later in the day, we took her on a walk to the park. We pushed her in the swings and played on the slide.

Some sights seen in the neighborhood as we walked through the neighborhood.

Love this chartreuse home.

Friday night was our daughter-in-law, Jayme’s, graduation from the Master’s program for her medical studies, a joint program between UC Berkeley and UCSF Medical School. The graduation took place in Berkeley. We went over to the East Bay early so that I could check out a boutique in Oakland. I think I found my mother of the bride outfit. It is very un-mother of the bride and very artsy and me. Maybe I will talk about it more at a later time. Lisa gave her blessing.

Here is the lovely courtyard of the venue for the graduation.

Here are Clay, Lisa, Jayme’s Mom, Karyn and her Grandma, Joyce.

And here she is with the class of 16 students. Each one had such interesting backgrounds and experiences. Paige was cited as their 17th participant since Jayme had her while in the program. They all love her so much.

We are so proud of her!!! In two years we will celebrate her becoming an M.D.

I leave you with one more photo of the sweet Paige. Today, we celebrated her first birthday. Lots of fun ensued. More later.

Inspired to Design Cover

Elizabeth Barton’s book is almost here!! I have an advance PDF copy of the book so that I can tell you all about it. It is no secret that I have long been an admirer of Elizabeth’s work and  her blog. I used to leave comments on her blog that she should just print all her blog posts in a book and sell it – her blog is that good. Early last year I took an on-line class with her and last fall, she came to Portland and did a lecture and workshop for our guild. It was a treat to have a face to face workshop with her.

I received the pdf of her book this morning and I could not put it down. I read through from cover to cover. She covers seven steps that are important for designing a quilt that is also art. You  start with inspirations and design sketches. She shows you how to start with a photo which can be distilled down to the essence in a sketch — discovering how to crop and find the most interesting part and how to leave the extraneous out. I think that many art quilters put too much into their landscapes and scenes taken from photos. I prefer a more simple abstracted look.

The second step is selecting size, shape and structure. Each section has exercises that are clearly explained and just challenging enough to keep you engaged. The third step is depth and space. This is a topic you don’t see covered in many art quilt how to books. She includes many devices for achieving a 3-dimensional illusion.

The fourth step is that very important element — value. The importance of having a change of value in your work for visual impact can not be overstated. Elizabeth has some great exercises to help. I loved the fifth step chapter on color. Elizabeth covers all the wonders of working with color and how to choose a color scheme.

The sixth step in Elizabeth’s book involves learning how to evaluate your design. Does it convey your main idea? Does it have harmony and unity? And, the seventh step is putting it all together. She covers working from your final sketch, enlarging via the gird method, blocking out the design, fabric selection and some construction methods.

I have only touched on some of the highlights. You can find the book on Amazon and view some of the pages. I would encourage you to do this. You can preorder the book — I think it ships in May.

The best parts of Elizabeth’s book for me are reading her wit and wisdom. This is a woman with a wicked sense of humor and I think it comes through in her writing. The book is also full of her beautiful work. I would want it just to look at her incredible body of work contained in the pages. I wish I had a copy to give away to one of you, but alas, C & T Publishing only sent me a PDF.

On a personal note, I am heading down to California tomorrow with Mr C. I am going to do some shopping for a Mother of the Bride dress on Thursday. On Friday, my daughter-in-law, Jayme, is graduating from Berkeley Medical School with a Master’s Degree in Public Health. She is starting her year of rotations among Bay Area hospitals as an intern and will take the boards in May. We are so proud of her. On Saturday, we will celebrate Paige’s first birthday. I can’t wait to see her and enjoy her happy little personality. It will be a nice family time.

This is Grumpy Cat. He has a page on Facebook. He says some pretty bad things — and with that expression, it is always funny and makes me laugh. My Twelve friend, Kristin La Flamme, made a quilt of this bad kitty. You can see it here. I had never heard about him until I saw her funny quilt. Now, I am obsessed with following this cat who never changes his expression, but never the less, gives me a chuckle every day.

What have I been up to? Nothing in the studio. We went to our first same sex marriage ceremony on Saturday. Our young and very talented preist, Nathan, married his partner, James. The actual marriage took place in Washington which has okayed same sex marriages. We had a blessing of the marriage at Trinity. The church was packed, and it was a joyous celebration. Both set of parents and the guys siblings were there and involved. It was very touching. It won’t be long before our daughter, Lisa, marries her long time partner, Clay, in California on June 1. We are hoping that Prop 8 gets struck down so that they will be legally married.

This morning, I had a Columbia Fiberarts Guild board meeting. Then, I  had lunch with friends before I took off to do some clothes shopping. I need some new summery things for our trip to California later this week. I am also on the hunt for a dress for the wedding. I am hoping to find something in San Francisco.

So, that is all I have for you today. No sketches, either.

Gerrieyellow

Last week when I was sick, I looked in the mirror and saw something like this. I had just had my hair newly re-dyed  and the combination of the copper colored hair and yellow skin, gave me the creeps. My first thought was, you should never have gone copper again. My second thought was, you really look like death warmed over and crawled back in bed.

The other thing that was going on was a case of the hives on my lower legs and feet every night. The worst itchiness. I had to slather myself in cortisone cream.

The yellow cast to my skin and the hives went away when I began to feel better on Friday.

So, this morning, I was telling my daughter, Stephanie about the hives that I had while I was sick. She has the hives quite often and has done lots of research on the causes. She told me that many people have hives on their feet during gall bladder attacks.

A light bulb goes off. Yellow skin. Hives. Severe abdominal pain. Duh. So I e-mailed my Dr. and then had a talk with her advice nurse. The nurse really felt it was a virus. I said, make sure you tell the Dr. about the hives and the yellow skin and remind her that I have just lost a bit of weight.

Long story, short, the Dr. e-mailed me back and said she had ordered blood tests and an ultrasound.  If it is my gall bladder, I certainly want to get it taken care of, but even minor surgery in my life right now is a daunting thought.

I am happy to say that I got the big silk quilt finished and photographed and submitted to the invitational show. Around the 22nd of the month, when juried quilts are announced, I will be able to share it with you.

A Quick Check-in

drawing 4-4-13

I have been crazy busy with SDA conference stuff and finishing the big quilt so that I can photograph it and submit it tomorrow. I am happy to say that I am going to make it. I finished the quilting this morning and then got it trimmed to size. I am now sewing the facings to the back.

I have nothing else of interest to share. Oh, I did get a drawing done. It is up at the top. I also got several 3 x 3’s stitched while I watched Project Runway. I had to go out and find some blue and yellow beads. Now, tonight, I realize that I am getting low on red. This is going to require a lot of beads!

The rain came back and Mr C and I both admitted we didn’t mind. It is such a part of life here in Portland during this time of year, it seems odd when it gets to be too sunny and dry. I really have become an Oregonian!
