Spicy Beads

Sunday, March 11th, 2007

Yesterday, M and M came to spend the night. They started their visit with some chocolate mint Girl Scout cookies:

Later, we went to Stickers in Westmoreland for Asian food. Miles had Yakasoba noodles with pork, Mia had Teriyaki chicken and rice. Mr C and I had a delicious halibut with coconut curry sauce and rice. We started the meal with Chinese scallion cake and dipping sauce and Vietnamese salad spring rolls. It was a very eclectic Asian meal.

Yesterday, I was cleaning the laundry room which is also the entry to our house from the garage. It is a catchall for stuff coming and going. I had an old spice bottle rack stored there that I have not needed for a year. I was about to send it to Good Will when I had a brain storm. Why not use it for bead storage. So I washed it up. And M and M helped me start sorting my beads by color.

We had a few spills, but overall it was a fun activity. I have a good start on the sorting and they felt like they had done something to help me (and they did!)

I still have some empty bottles — which is good because I still have a lot of beads to sort. This will be so much more efficient than little boxes and bags of beads in a box.

This afternoon, Mr C and I attended a concert at the cathedral — Arthur Honegger’s Oratorio —King David. The music was very atonal, which I love. It was nice to still have daylight for taking Maggie on a walk around the neighborhood after the concert.

For Judy in Georgia

Friday, March 9th, 2007

This post is for my friend, Judy in Georgia, who will soon be able to shop at Trader Joe’s. Last week when I went shopping there, I took some photos so that I can share some of my favorite items.

I just have to say that lately, Judy has been making me feel like a slug. She was in her kitchen last night at 9:30 making homemade hand lotion for goodness sake. Terry, my friend here in Portland, and I haven’t been doing much of anything. I have come to the conclusion that the amount of sunlight one receives in a day is in direct proportion to the amount of energy you have to expend on doing stuff. Of course, Terry has a good excuse, she is happily waiting for her first grandchild to arrive.

So here, for Judy, are some of my fave TJ items. My caveat is that some items may not be available in other areas.

tjsnacks.jpg

Snack foods: sesame honey almonds (for Mr C), tamari roasted almonds (for me), bittersweet chocolate wedges in a round tin ( I keep a tin by my computer), cilantro jalapeno hummus with pita chips and oatmeal cranberry dunkers.

tjpizza.jpg

The makings for pizza: mozzarella, pizza sauce, whole wheat pizza dough, Italian chicken sausage, broccoli, mushrooms and tomatoes.

tjdinners.jpg

Dinner food: chicken sausage raviolis and marinara sauce, lamb tenderloins and lentils and olive oil for many uses.

tjbreakfast2.jpg

Breakfast and dairy: Blueberry pomegranate juice (yummmmmm), Greek yogurt that is really thick (I buy the 0% fat, but you can get low fat and full fat), half and half for my coffee (which I buy at TJ’s), butter, gorgonzola cheese, Comte cave aged cheese, and uncured bacon.

tjbreakfast.jpg

More breakfast foods: I love the Kashi Heart to Heart Cereal and the low fat granola, there is the coffee and whole wheat tortillas and the best non-flour sprouted wheat bread.

tjdrinks.jpg

In addition to the juice, we love the Gerolsteiner bubbly water and we buy lots of wine. Many people go to TJ’s just to buy the Two buck Chuck wine (Charles Shaw), but I am a wine snob and I do not buy it. I once heard the owner interviewed and I didn’t like him – so there.

Non-food items. There are many non-food things at TJ’s. I buy flowers and these fantastic dish cloths that come in great colors. I buy my laundry detergent and many personal hygiene items. They have a great vitamin selection at great prices.

There are some great things in the frozen food department — Soycatash (succatash made with edamame), and other veggies. Mr C calls TJ’s the bachelor’s friend because of the prepared food that he can bring home and nuke.

So, Judy, I hope I have given you an idea of the great shopping experience awaiting you.

Last week, I was on the REI website to order an e-gift certificate for my son for his birthday. Suddenly, there was a blurb for a sale on Crocs — lime green Crocs. They arrived in the mail, today!

Mia had an earache and was up all last night so they didn’t come to stay over tonight. I’m hoping they can come tomorrow. We are watching, Proof. Mr C, the mathemetician, just told me that he loves the movie!

Thursday This and That

Thursday, March 8th, 2007

What have I been doing. Well, yesterday, I had the joy of getting my teeth cleaned and getting an AOK!! I laughingly call myself a dentist’s annuity because I have so much dental work. But, yippee, I have only a couple of fillings that might need to be replaced in the next couple of years.

Today, I cleaned my studio and put away a lot of stuff so that I can start a new project or pick up a wip to work on. I need to do some tidying in the office/playroom because M & M are coming to spend the night and will want to play down here. I like to have a neat work space, but I find it very difficult to keep it that way. I hate to do house cleaning.

I also added stuff to two more Round Robin collages, but they are so not my thing that I am just not going to show them. I sent them off to the next person today.

Terry has been blogging about her trip to Mexico. She generously brought gifts from her trip. She gifted everyone in STASH with the silver hand milagro. The cross is for my collection which can be seen here.

The students at Reed are still putting out flags. I went by and chatted with them this afternoon. Here are the remaining flags and photos of what it looks like now. See my March 4th post to find out what these flags represent.

I feel very somber when I walk through the flags. I feel so bereft for our country and what we have become. Today, I heard a Republican senator say that if we bring the troops home, the terrorists will follow them and fight us here. This does not make sense to me. If they want to come and fight us here, why don’t they do it now when all of our resources are over there? Anyway, they aren’t fighting us any more — it is a civil war and we created the atmosphere for the foment.

I decided that I wanted to do something to protest the whole situation, and I have a plan. Stay tuned and in a couple of weeks, you, too, might be able to participate.

Another Round Robin Collage

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

Today, I took photos of Fragments and uploaded it to my website. If you click on new work, you can see it finished.

I also worked on a Round Robin collage that has been sitting in my studio for quite a while. It is another more literal piece, but I had fun adding some abstract elements to it. Here is what it looked like when I received it:rrjanbefore.jpg

This is what it looks like now. Can you see the differences?

rrjanafter.jpg

I stamped some green vines on the house with one of my hand carved eraser stamps. I found a piece of music, titled Home Sweet Home. I printed it on vellum and tore it and attached it with gel medium.

I stamped a little forest of trees with a hand carved eraser stamp, using green and gold textile paint.rrjantreestamp.jpg

rrjanstampedtrees.jpg

I added some depth and texture to the water on the bottom edge by stamping with some commercial stamps.

rrjanwaterstamps.jpg

We got rather back-logged during the holidays and the beginning of the new year.  I received two more from UPS today, but I am not even going to open them until tomorrow.

It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood. I enjoyed getting back in the studio even though I injured my back over the week-end, and I have been in continuous pain. It is my upper back and neck. I wrenched it trying to squeeze out of the car when I couldn’t open the door all the way. I just tried icing it and it feels much better. I don’t know why I didn’t do that sooner.

Birthday Boys and a Reed Flag Update

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

I walked by the Reed College flags today and they were still putting them out. I will check again tomorrow to see if they are finished. The display is quite astonishing.

March 6th is the birthday of two very important men in my life — my son, Mark, and my son-in-law, Jack, also known as M & M’s dad. I searched for a photo of them together and finally decided to use this one taken about 3 years ago. I cropped them out of a family photo.

.jackandmark.jpg

Jack is on the left and Mark on the right. I have always thought it was nice of Stephanie to marry someone with the same birthday as someone else in our family so that I do not have to remember another date.  Both of these men are very dear to Mr C and I. They are both brilliant and creative and a joy to be around. We always like to say that the best part of living in North Carolina was having Jack come in to our lives. Jack is an architect and Mark is a landscape designer. There are not words to express how much we appreciate the landscaping design that Mark has done for us at our homes. Jack is by far the best dad in the world. He is also a wonderful partner in life to Stephanie. It makes us very happy that they have made us part of their lives here in Portland.

So, Happy Birthday to Jack and Mark. We took Mark out for his birthday when we were in SF last week. Tonight, we will go out for sushi with the family and back to Steph’s for Jack’s favorite dessert – cheesecake – yummm!

I have had a lot of catch-up/clean-up stuff to do since we got back from the desert. I did  a major purge of my clothes closet and drawers on Saturday. I have also had to catch up with the Surface Design website updates. Today, I hope to get back in the studio to do something creative.
