A Self-Portrait

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

I have been asked to send a photo of myself in my studio along with my piece for the PAQASouth Art Quilts Culture exhibit. I put my camera in the tripod and set the timer and got some photos of myself at my sewing machine. You get to vote for your favorite.

This is my favorite.

This one has a bit of a smile.

And this one is quite goofy, I think. Who sits at their sewing machine with a goofy grin like that?

I had a lot of face time with M & M this week-end. The whole family came for dinner on Friday night. Last night, they came and spent the night so that Steph could hear her BFF Tift Merritt sing at the Doug Fir Lounge. Tift was her maid of honor when she and Jack got married in NC.

I also spent some time looking at tiles and bathroom fixtures. I am going in a whole new direction with the tiles. This is a photo of the bathroom tiles that I took at the new Museum of Contemporary Crafts. It turns out that this was designed by Kelly at the tile store. It uses the large rectangle tiles with this complementary linear mosaic. It turns out that they can put together a mosaic like this with almost any colors you want. So, I am in the process of selecting colors so that they can make me a sample. I have a very cool idea for how to use it in our renovation without costing us way too much.

We had a couple of days of really warm and sunny weather. I was almost not ready for it to get so hot so fast. I have really become an Oregonian. Not to fear, I think we get snow flurries on Tuesday.

A Teeny Bit of Art

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

I have had such a hard time getting myself into the studio to work. So many distractions. Today, I had some Surface Design Web work to take care of. Next thing I know it is time to take a walk and then its lunch and then we took off to look at more tile for the floor of the bathroom. We brought some samples home. I think we have found something that we both like — a variegated black porcelain tile in a large rectangular shape.

By the time I got home, it was time to make dinner and then more work on the web site. I was determined to make something before the day is over. I bought some 6 inch square stretched canvases. I thought it would be fun to make some small fiber pieces and mount them. Here is what I did tonight.

I used some of my discharged hand-dyes for the main buildings. I had cut these birds for the other piece, but they were too small so I saved them.

Here is a side view, I thought it would be “cute” to make the wire extend around the sides.

This is sort of a test piece, but I think I like these – a little bigger than a post card.

Tile Update

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

I thought I would share the results of our tile design work. We met with a designer at the tile store. She showed us these extra large subway style tiles that are really reasonably priced. I think we will do those vertically with a band of the mosaic running around the perimeter of the bathroom, where there is tile. There will be a half wall in the shower and we may do that entirely in the mosaic. Steve wanted to warm up the room by  having the floor use warmer colors. She suggested this porcelain tile that looks like fabric. The color picks up the caramel color in the mosaic.

But, when I was looking at my photos, I was really taken with the black version:

The nice thing about those tiles is that they have a bit of a texture so not as slippery, and they come in a variety of  shapes and sizes – rectangular and square. I would really like to do small ceramic tiles in a caramel/black combination. So, we will keep looking.

Gratuitous Grandchild Photos

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

This afternoon, I was finally going to get down to the studio to do some work. Then, these wonderful beings showed up.

They get out of school early on Wednesday so their mom brought them over for a visit and to take possession of her birthday present, a new lens for her camera.

After a snack of apple champagne, molasses cookies and almonds, we enjoyed some time in the front yard. It was not the greatest weather, but nice enough to do some chalk drawings and hang out with Grandma.

Mia drew this kitten:

Miles drew this International Don’t sign for girls!! Argh – he is that age.

Maggie loves when they come over, but she is getting so old, she can hardly keep up with them. She is wondering which direction they went! Notice the lovely Portland film of moss.

I had a good weigh-in day at WW. I was down 1.2 pounds and I feel that I am in control of this again. Whew!!

Italian Food and Stylin’ Faucets

Monday, April 7th, 2008

I spent the morning cooking Italian soups. I have been finding some fabulous sounding recipes from WW that require a slow cooker. I haven’t had a slow cooker since the Age of Aquarius so yesterday, I bought one and it was on sale — that is always a good thing. the one I used to have was sort of beige and brown as I recall. I like the look of this pot – fits my kitchen. It contains an Italian beef and lentil soup. I like to have soup in the freezer or ready to go on Mondays as we have a class at 6:30.

I also made a double batch of Italian Zero points soup. A cup of this will stave off hunger or it makes a nice lunch by adding some meat or beans. The house still smells like Italian seasonings.

This afternoon we went to a nearby plumbing store to look for fixtures for the bathroom renovation. This set is by Hansgrohe, a German company. They are right next door to the Duravit company which manufactures the sinks we are getting.

The second set is made by Danze, an American company. I really love the square shower head.

We are getting rid of the tub in the bathroom and having a larger, walk-in shower. There are a lot of options for showers — jets that spurt from the sides of the shower, called body sprays, huge rain shower heads. the plumbing can get very complicated and expensive. We are going to try to keep it simple and elegant.

Tomorrow morning we interview the last contractor. In the afternoon, we are meeting with a designer at the tile store. I hope I can fit in some time in the studio.
