Retreating

rants.jpg

I am giving up on the occasional political rant on this blog. You can find my rants on my new blog — Gerrie on Politics. Why? Because I need to have a place where I can say what I need to say without interrupting my artistic endeavors. I hope those of you who come here because you enjoy my rants will come and visit at the new blog. Nuf said.

I am all packed, except for the requisite food, for retreating to the Oregon Coast with my STASH group. I love this group of women. We will be eating ice cream at the Tillamook Creamery. We will be laughing a lot. We will visit “It’s Good to be Green” where Terry and I will get to see our video interviews! The weather looks ominous so I am not sure there will be many beach walks.

I am going to knit, read and work on some collages for Collage Mania, an American Cancer Society fundraiser organized by Virginia Spiegel.

I think there is WiFi so I will take the IBook and entertain you with our activities.

Fini!

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

I have finished my final project for Lizzie’s class. Now, I have to write my own critique based on the design principles that we learned. I used red linen for the red lines and the binding. This is such a happy quilt. I love it. For these complex collages, I like to do a simple grid quilting. Here it is. If the binding looks a little wonky, it is because it is not hand stitched on the back – only pinned.

Here is a close-up. You can see how I did the quilting. I had some thread that was variegated red, orange and blue. It was perfect.

I didn’t make it to WW’s today because I had the Columbia Stitchery Guild meeting. I don’t think I lost weight, anyway.

Jean Cacicedo was very entertaining. She talked about good design with some props and a slide show. She is a one-of-a-kind clothing designer. Her coats made from felted wool are to die for!!

Tomorrow I must get organized to leave home for a few days. The STASH group is going on their annual retreat to the Oregon Coast. Whoopee!!

Kimono Collage Update

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

I am finally catching up on my sleep and am back at work in the studio. Tonight, I decided that I could no longer fuss with this collage. I ironed it down and it is ready for quilting.

Here is a detail:

Tomorrow morning, I am going to Columbia Stitchery Guild. Our guest speaker is Jean Cacicedo. I hope to get this piece quilted when I get home. I don’t do bindings that much anymore, but I am thinking this might want one.

That Crazy Woman Named Geraldine

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

The content of this post has been moved to my new political blog. The comment from my very good friend June has prompted me to find a more “appropriate” spot for my occasional ranting.

I just want to say that perhaps I lost it when I wrote that post, but I am not alone. I recommend taking nine minutes of your time to listen to the commentary by Keith Obermann last night.  Or, read this editorial on the Daily Kos.

Good 2 B Green Show

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

I am so tired. Between all the family stuff and the trip to the coast to see the “It’s Good to be Green” show, I am done in. Then, there was the time change.

I arrived at the Latimer Quilt & Textile Center and found Terry and Larkin and the rest room (it is about a 2 hour drive). Terry did her video interview first. Then, it was my time. The videographer told me that I am a natural in front of the camera. I did find it easier than I expected, to talk about my piece and how I did it. June arrived soon after and got her 15 minutes of fame – oh it wasn’t that long!!

Here is a group of us waiting for the videographer to finish so that we can see the show. Left to right: Larkin, moi, Jan Beale, Terry, Arlene. Jan and Arlene are from Whidbey Island, where Larkin lives.

Here are the Portland Green spouses waiting in the hall. That is June with them. Hmm – lots of enthusiasm there.

Finally, the show. It looked really great. The 18 inches by 45 inches made for a cohesive show, even though the work was very diverse.

Mine didn’t play well with the other pieces so it was hung on the door to the exhibit hall, welcoming one and all.

Here are some shots of the show. As artists, we were allowed to take photos today. I have tried to give an overview of the show.

In the shot above, you can see a TV. That is where the artist interviews will play throughout the run of the show.

And, finally, here is Larkin with the Portland troika. Don’t we look so artsy?

If I missed getting a shot of your quilt, I am sorry. I just wanted to give a flavor of how the show was hung. It really did look beautiful.
