…six to go.

Here is a close-up.

I found some great red batiks in my stash that are working very nicely in these blocks. I plan to make 4 runners from these fabrics.

Thanks for all your concern regarding my falls. I want to emphasize that I mentioned them because it is so rare for me to tumble. I have great balance, and I am quite resilient.

I thought I would be in pain today, but I am fine. I managed to get in 72 minutes of walking. Part of it in the sun this morning. At dusk, Maggie and I went down to the Rhodie Garden and it was breathtakingly beautiful. The sunset across the river was reflected in the reservoir, and the light was unbelievable. I should have had my camera, but you know how that is!!

Bleak, Short, Klutz, Beautiful, More

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

These words will pretty much describe my week-end.

In the bleak mid-winter — that just about describes today (I know, it isn’t even winter, yet!). It was dark and cold with a few snow flurries. I didn’t have time to sit by my happy light as I had to be at church early to help with the Art’s Commission ministry fair.

Yesterday morning, I had an appointment to get my hair colored and cut. I thought I said that I wanted it a little shorter. She started snipping away and the next thing I knew, yikes!, it is really short. Short would be okay, if it were a decent haircut. If I get brave, I will try to take a photo so you can see. The worst part was that Mr C couldn’t hide his dislike of it. Oh well, it will grow, won’t it? In the meantime, maybe I will just wear a bag over my head.

I feel like such a klutz. I have fallen twice in two days, both times, I was carrying my coffee travel mug. Yesterday, when I came home from my bad haircut, I slipped on the mail that was on the floor because it had been slipped through the mail slot. I hit the floor like a ton of bricks. Today, while rushing in to church with my coffee in my hand and wearing high heels, I caught my shoe in my pants leg and down I went on the concrete steps, but, I did not spill my coffee. So, tonight, I am feeling a little stiff on the left side of my body. It is a god thing that I have strong bones.

Last night, we attended the Baroque Christmas concert at Trinity. It is such a beautiful experience. I love Baroque music. The musicians and singers come from Europe, Canada and the US. The musicians play authentic Baroque instruments — recorders, flutes, harpsichord and strings. My favorite part of the concert was a section of a Christmas Cantata by Bach, sung in German. After the concert, they served Wassail and cookies.

This afternoon, I finished another dupioni table runner, and started blocks for more, using my Christmas fabrics. I still have to do the bindings on both. If I had enough to do a bias stripe, Imight try it. I liked Diane’s idea of using just a bit of the stripe. Instead, I will do a matching binding.

I made a boo boo on this one. The center block has the same fabric on the outside that I used in the border which looked weird when I put it all together. I tried to remedy the situation by doing some fancy stitching on it.

I used the same red metallic thread that I used in the quilting. I am not sure if it works; it looks better in person.

I want to make one more in dupioni, but decided to start on the Christmas fabric, for a change of pace.

I am doing production work, making several blocks at a time with strip piecing.

So there you have it — my week-end.

The Christmas Tree

Friday, December 7th, 2007

I put on my boots, and Mr C and I headed out to Christmas Tree land, near Oregon City. It was a very pretty drive, once we left the freeway.

Here is the Christmas Tree farm we chose — actually, it was the first one we found that was open today.

xmastreefarm.jpg

We were on the hunt for a Noble Fir. Mr C wanted a tall skinny tree. We found the perfect tree, very quickly. With precision, Mr C felled the tree.

To the victor, go the spoils.

The tree looked so pretty tied to the top of our red Jeep.

Mr C got it in the house and took care of doing the lights. M & M came over after school and began taking every Christmas ornament and decoration out of the boxes which had been retrieved from the basement.

Mia is an excellent decorator. She even climbed up on the step ladder, when needed to place ornaments on the upper branches. Look how tall she is getting.

Miles enjoyed arranging the nativity sets.

We worked until 5, and then we went to Laughing Planet for burritos and quesadillas. Back home, we had peppermint ice cream and watched “Charlie Brown Christmas.” They are now sound asleep, and we are watching “Waitress” on tv.

A Really Nice Thursday

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

You have to love a day that includes museum viewing and lunching with friends and some creative time in the studio.

Today, my STASH group met at the Contemporary Craft Museum to check out the current exhibit and to do some shopping. I bought this funky little creche. It is hand carved, painted and embellished with flocking.

We then had lunch at the Park Kitchen, a few blocks from the museum. It has a very unusual menu. I had clams braised in cider with apples, onions and greens. It was so delicious.

Here we are, back row: Reva, Moi, Linda. Front row: Terry, Beth, Gale.

I loved this painting of dogs enjoying some fancy drinks.

We shared two delicious desserts. Pear Frangipane tart and a Chocolate Ginger concoction.

When I got home this afternoon, I laundered my cotton Christmas fabric and worked on the dupioni silk runner. It is all quilted and waiting for binding. These things could become addictive. I have really enjoyed the mindless piecing.

Here is a close-up. I have enough of the stripe to use for binding, but I am not sure if that is what I want. What do you think?

Tomorrow, we are going out to hunt down a Christmas tree. After school, M & M are coming to help me decorate the tree and to spend the night. Warning – cute pictures will be posted in the next couple of days.

Wednesday This and That

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

OK, let’s get it out of the way. I lost what I gained over Thanksgiving. I was hoping to lose more. We had to decide on a goal for the month of December: lose, maintain or gain weight. I really want to reach my 20 pounds this month so I am going to go for losing.

In the past 3 days, I have had excellent e-mails coming in from my website. One of Mr C’s cousins who lives in NC, bought one of my quilts and told me how much she enjoys keeping up with the family through my blog — Hi, Ruth! Someone else, from Virginia, checked in on my website and said she loves all things Japanese and wished that my Kyoto Collage was still for sale and wondered if I had anything similar. Then, an old friend from the Bay area checked in through my website to let me know that she has remarried and her new husband has roots in Portland, and she wants to get together next time they come up here to visit family. All of this in a matter of two days is very exciting.

Kristin has a pattern for a really cool Mod Log Cabin Table Runner on her web site. I decided to use the pattern to make some Christmas gifts. I went to Mill Ends and picked up some Christmasy fabric.

I have a huge stash of Dupioni silk so I decided to attempt to make some silk runners in Christmas colors. I got 5 blocks done, but one of them had to be rejected.

dupionitestrunner.jpg

I am not sure if I am happy with the striped fabric in the center.

Tomorrow, the STASH group is getting together for some holiday cheer. We are meeting at the Contemporary Craft Museum and then out to lunch. I am hoping to do some gallery hopping and shopping in the Pearl while I am down there. Hopefully, the weather will be a bit better than it has been. It is raining again, tonight.
